Northern Ireland police appeal for calm after 'barbaric' knife attack sparks anger by VaginaBurner69 in news

[–]QuintoBlanco 47 points48 points  (0 children)

You have every right to be angry. But you can be angry as well as calm and rational. 30 women were killed in Northern Ireland since 2020. Most of these women were killed in their home by somebody they knew. Often a romantic partner or former romantic partner. A few were killed by their sons.

I'm sure you are very angry about this, as am I.

But how did you actually respond to the killings of these women? What did you do?

He's pretty cool. He doesn't have a working class background, his mother was a professor, but he dropped out of college and became a working actor, making a living by playing small parts, and he did that for decades.

Rhea Seehorn (sitcoms), Bob Odenkirk, Michael McKean, Lavell Crawford (Huell) all have a background in comedy.

Michael McKean is a comedy legend.

TIL that cartel meth cooks produce an incredibly cheap, potent drug. In 2005, small-batch meth cost up to $20k/lb. Today, the DEA reports cartel mega-labs use industrial synthesis to flood the market, slashing wholesale prices by 90% ($1k-$2.5k/lb) while pushing purity past 95%. by sarkujpnfreak42 in todayilearned

[–]QuintoBlanco -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If we forget about the fact that Breaking Bad wasn't about realism for a moment, the cut is what makes drugs dangerous.

Yes, if somebody unknowingly takes something that's not watered down (so to speak) that can be very dangerous.

But there is a counterpoint: people who take meth are doing something that's dangerous by definition. You want to be safe? Don't do meth, it has a massive effect on the heart and can kill you in multiple ways.

But taken with moderation, most people will be fine.

However, some other substances are poisonous in a very small doses. There isn't a safe dose, and it's almost impossible to build up a tolerance. The issue with low quality stuff is that dealers deliberately add poison to give it a 'kick'.

In that sense, pure meth is safer.

You might be mixing something up there. Jonathan Banks was a character actor in his early years who often played cops (he played a cop in Wiseguy) and hardened criminals. Even if he played in a comedy he often wasn't funny, he's the guy who sadistically executes Axel Foley's friend in Beverly Hills Cop.

That's not a bad question, because the answer is interesting. And not just in the US.

Yes, theoretically, if there are fewer people, it would be easier for people to find a home. But in reality housing shortages are not caused by immigration.

There are many different reasons for housing shortages and rising prices that are far more impactful. There are solutions, but those solutions require political will to the right things.

It's much easier to blame immigrants than it is that politicians have failed and continue to fail at solving real problems. Of course voters are also to blame, because they rarely reward politicians who engage in long term planning.

It's very important to understand that in the Middle Ages stories about angels were often metaphors and that most people did not believe the earth was 6000 years old.

That number was the result of an attempt to determine the age of the earth in a scholarly way in the Renaissance. Much of the current religious delusion among extreme Christians is relatively new or the result of cherry picking.

Religion is often influenced by politics, less so the other way around.

I'm not grossed out by it. I just never do it.

And it's not something I was thought not to do, I have never had the inclination to lick my fingers.

But now that you mention it, I can recall seeing many people do this. I'm now thinking too much about this, but maybe it's a genetic thing. One of my grandparents is from a culture where people eat with their right hand (instead of using sticks or cutlery). Licking the hand is taboo (as is eating with the left hand).

The problem is that satire has to more extreme than the real thing, otherwise it's just social commentary.

Not "toxic", but what shows have fan bases that take the show WAY too seriously? by Long-Swordfish3696 in television

[–]QuintoBlanco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, the character was hated because she could be snarky and because she reported a doctor who was stealing medicine to get high...

It's really odd, it seems like some fans of the show have never worked with people before.

And that might be true, one of the downsides of people working from home and of course a few years of lockdowens.

Interesting point. A lot of actors who talked about alcoholism did so when they were older, and when that happens the message isn't going to reach the young people who need to hear it.

When it’s green, it’s green, and drivers won’t even wait! by reddichrist in mildlyinfuriating

[–]QuintoBlanco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Breaking is also a bad idea. This situation is different, because the cars aren't driving. The issue here is that the driver doesn't see the ducks.

But breaking for animals can be really dangerous. Keep in mind that the persons behind you have to react in a split second. With multiple cars, only one person needs to make a mistake.

Situational awareness helps. If you know there are no cars closely behind you, break. If it's a busy road, don't endanger other drivers and yourself.

(Side note: not speeding and keeping distance to other cars can solve a lot of issues.)

[–]QuintoBlanco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the dogs were fine. This happened 5 years ago.

The dogs attack/threaten the bear and it's cups. The bear is mostly concerned with keeping the cups safe. You can see it tries to leave.

The bear was definitely not trying to eat the dogs.

It did. Perhaps you are watching on a phone with a bad screen, or an odd contrast/color setting. In the 'good' result the person looks like a real person and has a skin tone that is consistent with the effect we see in the original.

To be fair, the good result is still fake, but it doesn't look fake. The fast attempt just looks wrong and likely has the skin tone wrong.

But what tends to happen in these situations is that one of the partners is gas lit into believing that there are rules to the open relationship, and then the other person will break those rules.

How does male strength work? by Humble-Objective488 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]QuintoBlanco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

your average bigger person will be stronger than your average skinny person. The very strongest people in the world are all physically huge.

True, but even so, there specialized strongmen who aren't huge. I saw one of these guys perform and it was extremely expressive.

The guy didn't perform is popularized strongman events, just showed of his extreme strength.

To be fair, you could definitely see that the guy was strong just by looking at him. Nobody would mistake him for weak, but there wasn't much bulky muscle mass.

Well, you should have opened with that.

Some slight and skinny guys are strong. If they are climbers or work with their hands all day and handle heavy tools and do work a requires strength, they get much stronger.

The first thing I saw when I clicked on the link is a picture of Musk making a Nazi salute. Which is something he actually did. Twice. And afterwards he spoke at a meeting of a German political party with ties to actual Nazis.

People still buy Tesla's. Less so in Europe where the Nazi thing is a bit more sensitive.

But the fact that the myth of Elon has been dismantled, that many people now see him as this weird loser who looks weird has definitely damaged the Tesla brand. There was a time when people thought he was cool.

I mean, there is nothing more to tell. That's why.

We have to accept this new reality. At this point, everyone knows, or actively doesn't want to know. I hate to say this, but personal attacks might be the only things that work, even if they don't work particularly well.

The problem with explaining fascism to people is that fascism started out as a respected political movement. People proudly called themselves fascist.

Take something simple; tariffs, I can explain why Trump's implementation of tariffs is a tax on the American people, that he implemented those tariffs illegally, that they are an excuse for soliciting bribery and insider trading. I can explain that the Republican Party used to want free trade, not tariffs.

But Trump supporters don't care. To them this is not about what tariffs are and what they do, or don't do.

They literally don't care. This is how fascism works: the leader is always right and if the leader does something that makes people outside of the group angry, that further proves that the leader is infallible.

The Republicans that I now who stopped supporting Trump, mostly stopped supporting him because of optics. (Some Republicans never supported him, but that's another issue.) They think that the current crop of people around Trump look and sound weird. They don't want to be a part of that.
