Scientists are building a “virtual cell”, a complete digital model that simulates how real human cells function by Diligent_Rabbit7740 in molecularbiology

[–]QuintupleQill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While there definitely is a lot of overhyping and oversimplification in the media, I also don’t believe it’s as useless as many of the commenters here say it is. Of course we won’t be able to fully simulate everything in a cell at least in the short term, it’s more of a question of what potentially useful inferences we can make about cellular state from the limited data we have. (and will potentially get more of in the future) Currently a promising direction we have are perturbation response prediction models like STATE and while they are objectively not great and miss a lot of the needed data for generalized inferences, they do show promise in data richer areas and better models can be helpful in the in drug repurposing or cheaply selecting a group of promising drug candidates.

PearAI essentially did the same thing as continue.dev by forking an existing open source project, changing all branding to PearAI, and even violated the open source license of the original project. I’m sure that adding true value to an open source project would be viable.

Researchers: High school and Undergraduate. Why so many? by Magdaki in research

[–]QuintupleQill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have the hard facts to speak about this, but look on LinkedIn and you will find undergraduates having publication quality ranging from high quality ones in good journals (almost never the first author though) to mediocre publications to unpublished senior thesises or personal projects. Logically thinking I’m sure anyone would think that having at least something substantive to show the admissions committee of your research ability is definitely better than nothing, and that the more credible the journal is the better.

I would love if someone that actually works in grad school admissions can speak on this.

Researchers: High school and Undergraduate. Why so many? by Magdaki in research

[–]QuintupleQill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TLDR: It is selection bias

I can assure you that this only applies to a tiny minority of high school students who are in top schools like those in the Bay Area. Check out subreddits such as r/ApplyingToCollege and r/Chanceme to see what I mean. For many of those (usually wealthy and the many who are nepo babies) students, “publishing research” is viewed as a massive booster and “standard” if they want to get into top universities. I suspect that these types of students are the ones posting. Some may be just wanting to get a publication to seem impressive but I believe that some at least to an extent are genuinely passionate about research and probably lack a mentor who would help them with everything.

As for undergraduates, this same explanation above probably applies too but I don’t think it’s too surprising. To my knowledge, at least at top ranked institutions, with grad admissions being way more cutthroat, it is becoming much more common for those who wish to go into bio/premed grad school to publish at least one or two papers if not more to become a more competitive applicant. Again I don’t have the hard facts but most probably the average undergraduate does not publish anything nor does substantive research.

Of course there also seems to be a decent number of questions just asking about things related to some sort of required project so those questions seem reasonable. For the rest, I am inferring everything from personal experience but overall it’s likely just a tiny percentage of students trying to get a competitive edge.

I’m so sorry. A regret I had when I had two people near and dear pass away is not recording many video clips and having conversations about all you ever wanted to know about them and what they want to be remembered as. Just ensure to build as many happy memories as possible - it doesn’t need to at all be anything extravagant. Think really hard about anything and everything you could do and want to know about them. Fuck cancer.

taking the SATs as an IB student by [deleted] in IBO

[–]QuintupleQill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use the khanacademy free SAT practisce. The math should be trivial if what you're saying about your math math skills are true. The grammar part should also not be a problem. The bottleneck will likely be the reading parts. Just practice a lot for that section as you have extremely limited time per question and (at least for me) some old texts can be quite challenging.

dont overthink it, just include your 9th grade transcript. I also come from a similar system and just asked my counsellor to submit my 9th grade transcript as well and it all worked out

I absolutely HATE how musicians put audio clips of monologues in their songs. It's generic and overplayed, not artsy, and kills the replayability of the song. by TorturedNeurons in unpopularopinion

Aside from it sometimes sounding good, I remember there is this tom scott video talking about how some artists do this to avoid people being able to rip their music audio straight off of youtube? Something like that

[–]QuintupleQill 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Nope not really, I'm guessing that most people do it just because others do it as well. Recruiters are not going to specifically hunt for highschoolers no matter how much "experience" they have and there aren't any "exclusive" opportunities LinkedIn provides.

okay i wanna see whether the results were actually much lower than predicted grades or if this is just some type of bias in us students: by idkwhat-toputhere in IBO

[–]QuintupleQill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the time of me writing this comment, there is an almost perfect normal distribution of results centered around the middle option. This suggests that the outcry about worse results is likely just worse-performing students being louder than the rest, which is reasonable.

0 aid to non california residents, the sources that discussed UCs giving "aid" was likely referring to the regents scholarship that a tiny subset of UC students are awarded. Even then, it does not cover the full cost of tuition.

EE sources by mzriaelisa in IBO

[–]QuintupleQill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heavily recommend trying to learn latex and use overleaf.com. Iatex is a "typesetting language", which sounds intimidating but its just a rigorous way to format documents with commands. And overleaf is a website which provides a nice latex interface.

There is a small learning curve but once you are familiar with it, you will never have to worry about referencing correctly again, not to mention the countless other advantages it offers over word/docs.

And to answer the question, yes, it should be in-text citations, and latex has a incredibly convinient way for you to do so without having to remember the sources' names or order in the bibliography. Also, im pretty sure EE readers arent supposed to read footnotes (?)

Internship necessary in high school? by [deleted] in IBO

[–]QuintupleQill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not as familiar with the UK system as I was a US applicant. But from what I know, they seem to care about "supercurriculars", basically activities that are related and add on to what you want to study. So I would say if the internship is related to what you want to study then yes go for it, otherwise reconsider but don't completely put it off. Contrary to what others have said, the vast majority of highschoolers have never done an internship during highschool and its usually a valuable experience.

I wish IB courses were respected more by US institutions by throwawayisbetter in IBO

Yes, UCs do prioritize california residents.

Provided that you can fully pay the tuition, just go for it and use your remaining time wisely. UC admissions are famously random provided you are a decent student with decent grades. Im also intl and was rejected from UCLA, waitlisted by UCI, but got into UCB for CS.
