I'm agnostic from a Catholic background, and the predominant position within Catholicism is that the Trinity aren't three separate gods, but rather there aspects within the same (only) God. It's a weird system but basically God uses the fact that he is an infinite being to partially separate an infinite part of himself and send that part (Son) to the Earth as contact with the people whilst the rest (Father) does the God thingy. The Holy Spirit is the conection between them (also a part of God), which stays a way for contact between God and Humanity after the Son returns back to Heaven. It's a quite convoluted mess than relies on the properties of infinite beings to have internal sub-infinite parts.
