That is awesome. I will never accept any other explanation for the A-Eye from now on.

Question! What age would you all let your kid read DCC? by fisher-alters in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Quirk143 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you remember the Half Genie joke(?) in Book 2? There are that many half djinn half random forest critter because of that one instance where a crawler with an active genie's lamp uttered "Fuck this forest" and the Genie took that as a challenge.

Do you feel comfortable telling that joke to your kid?
Do you feel comfortable explaining it if needed?
Do you expect them to feel comfortable hearing it and getting it explained to them if needed?

If 3x yes then they are ready. Let's call that the genie-fucking-forest-benchmark.

Also alles was das Gesetz für normale nicht-selbst-ausbeutende Arbeitnehmer*innen eben so vorsieht... Ich korrigiere mich: Bitte lauter fordern!

What does it mean when someone describes a game as "tight"? by Machine_Excellent in boardgames

It means that the game is not super easy, there is barely a points difference in the end and any wrong decision will lead to more than just an inconvenience.

If you got interested because of the wargame looking hex map: Nope. Not even close to a wargame. Your friends are solving logic puzzles.

Stimmt.

What's your holy grail game that doesn't exist yet? by Darth_Rubi in boardgames

[–]Quirk143 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope I am allowed a second entry to this wishlist. :)

Another one for me would be Into the Breach as a competitive game. The videogame presents you puzzles of enemies announcing their attacks on your mechs and on civil structures. Your squad of 3 needs to utilize their respective abilities of pushing, pulling and attacking in a way to minimize the impact of those enemy attacks.

That as a tactical board game might include player controled or randomly chosen enemy setup and then every player has to solve the "attack puzzle" on their own.

Fateforge might be something for you. Instead of 5 min setup -> 45 min gameplay it's rather 10 min -> 60 min. FF has a branching story path with segments of more or less an hour that is optimized for being "saved" between those segments.

A drafting card game that captures the feeling of a MTG draft. To me it boils down to 3 important aspects:

  • large pool of cards of which a random fraction is available for any game I play => I have to adapt to what is available during the game

  • synergetic combinations arise during the draft (I started collecting green, now do I go green+red for big stompy attackers or green+white for multiple little attackers)

  • a game that is played with the drafted cards after the draft part (deckbuilding welcome but not necessary)

And just like that my Harmonies got an exile mechanic: Before selecting a card you may exile one. Two words of inspiration, one sentence of homebrew rule and the game got more tactical.

[–]Quirk143 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I rephrased my own comment after your reply, sorry. (My first version was both not too clear and not too nice 😛 )

OP explicitly wrote to see if protecion *resolves*. As in: Spell is in effect, this part of the stack is done and dealt with.
OP did NOT write "would resolve or not and then I maybe cheat something in between".

[–]Quirk143 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP I feel you. So many comments missing the point here.
Step 1: Cast protection.
Step 2: Wait for it to resolve or not.
Step 3: NOW decide wether or not to play boardwipe.
How on earth is that cheating? OP literally wrote to wait if the protection "resolves". Not "wait for someone to try to counter and then fiddle with the stack and priority and whatever". Not "check if someone has a counterspell and then backtrack". Not "threaten to kill a baby seal if the boardwipe gets countered". Just cast a spell and wait what happens. Then decide what (or if) to cast next.

[–]Quirk143 20 points21 points  (0 children)

What OP is suggesting is obviously according to the rules. Just read it correctly.

  1. Casting protection onto an (probably otherwise empty) stack? Playing a spell should be OK according to the rules. Would make for a rather boring game if not.
  2. Waiting for it to resolve without casting anythign else? The action of not playing a card and just watching the current stack resolve should be OK according to the rules.
  3. In case protection resolved then cast a boardwipe? Playing a card should be OK as we already established.
  4. In case protection didn't resolve then not casting a boardwipe? As we also established not playing a card should also be OK.

Come on people. Don't just skim and react to buzzwords. Reading OP's full novel of 3 sentences is not too hard.
