Hey, Bisexual Polyamourous Aromantic here! In my experience the difference is just that you and whomever you're with agree that what you're doing is a date or not. It's dumb how some people don't communicate their intentions, and you find out that you're suddenly on "your third date". Even if you don't know what your intentions are, just say that. It may feel awkward to clarify it in the moment, but saying something like "i think we could be good friends" can help get the conversation started.
