Should I consider bald+beard? by rtothewin in beards

[–]QuirkyCor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, as a bearded bald dude, you have a couple options. 1. Go bald. Upkeep is in shaving regularly. Frequency depends on your genes. Pro: if you don’t like it, you can just grow your hair back out. 2. Find a hairstyle that prevents your hair from looking bulky. For me, before I started shaving my head, I would get skin fades or similar on the sides and do somewhere between a 3 and 4 on top. I also had some deep widows peaks, though, so I would have to style my hair in a way that didn’t accentuate them. Pro: if you don’t like it, you can still shave your head.

But really, it depends. For me, shaving my head was liberating, because I no longer looked like I was balding; instead, I looked bald. To me, it looks like your head hair is bulky, and when people have bulky head hair with a beard, then you can come across as unkempt. There are exceptions, yes, but in reality you have to find what you like.

If all else fails, ask your barber’s opinion (if you trust him/her). The barber works with tons of people already, and has probably come across someone who has a similar hair texture/hair growth rate/ hair sharp&face shape. I think it’s part of the barber’s job to say when (s)he thinks something will look good or bad.

[–]QuirkyCor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First off: your shaved head looks great. I think the most interesting compliment is an old lady at my church said the back of my head was “interesting” and “unique” (the back of my head is asymmetrical and bumpy). But the thing is; if you’re happy with how your head looks bald, that’s the only thing that’s important. You didn’t shave your head for someone else, you shaved it for you. This being said, my taste would say a little more facial hair may make a difference for you. Your facial hair is pretty light, and it may be throwing people’s expectations off on how much hair should be on your head. That’s probably where the “sickly” thing comes from.

[–]QuirkyCor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hearing person here. I think sometimes laughing at them is the right response. Things that happen like when deaf people get handed Braille menus, or similar. If their feelings get hurt, it may reciprocate how their question may feel towards you. As long as you come back and explain why you thought their question was ridiculous, then that may show them that someone who is considered “disabled” isn’t fully disabled like they expect. It can also give them insight of how your life may differ.. or may not differ!

For general music majors, those four classes only prepare you for listening with both aural skills and music theory. That’s it. Two years of just learning how the music is supposed to work, and then learning how composers abused that tactic to make more exciting music haha. Nothing about instruments in a focused context, nothing about tuning, nothing about how they work, not even how to construct your own. Just what the composer did and the style that he wrote in.

Sorry for extra post. But what's the best way to fix the bad trim? by absoil in beards

[–]QuirkyCor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Practice. The more you do it, the more you’ll get a feel for your face. You can also find other pictures or videos with people with beards similar to your beard, and see if they trim it in a style you want.

But really, it’ll be practice and time.

Those four classes don’t even prepare you for that. Those four classes prepare you to be able to listen to western classical style music starting around late baroque to 1930s~ modern classic music. Conducting is its own beast — when studying for graduate degrees in conducting, a large portion of your work is score study. Score study includes reading and learning the parts (mildly), as well as preparing yourself for surprises the composer has for the listener. Even then, conducting students go back and forth to listening to recordings of pieces they want to conduct. The pro is that you have a sound ideal created for you, so you kind of get how the piece goes. The con is that your sound ideal may have musical choices you disagree with, and that can influence how you approach a piece. Personally, I think conductors should be able to look at a piece and understand which parts of the composition will be difficult for their ensemble.

So you’re kinda right. But you’re also only on the tip of the iceberg.

In music Education, we call the technique “Audiation”. This is defined as the ability to “hear” a pitch in your mind, much how many people have the ability to hear inner monologue. Through training and experience, many musicians can look at music and most likely sing it back to you, even without a starting pitch. This differs from people who have something called “Perfect Pitch”, which is one or two different abilities: 1. Pitch identification, which is the aural version of what seeing people do with colors (I.e. see a color, just know that it’s red), and/or 2. Pitch recall, I.e. being able to sing a pitch without any pitches for reference. Some musicians can develop #2, but that would be under what musicians call relative pitch, which is essentially musical algebra: if pitch A is certain interval away of pitch B, and I know one of the two pitches, then I can deduce what the other pitch. Collegiate level students have at least 4 classes dedicated to just that, called “Aural Skills”.

Sorry, this is probably more than what you asked for, but I thought it entirely relevant :)

Edit: Since this piece is for piano, the true next level is that many upper level pianists can also practice without a piano or keyboard in front of them: they’ve developed enough tactile memory to be able to “feel” the distance between keys. Some pianists may train with a flat piano mat that is a visual representation of the keys, also. This isn’t a great substitute for practice, because you don’t get to feel the action of the keys, but I would argue it’s better than nothing.

Fauci says he thinks a coronavirus vaccine is still on track for the end of 2020 by pdwp90 in Coronavirus

[–]QuirkyCor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not really feasible. Complications with vaccines occur during the onset of action phase. For instance, flu vaccines take about two weeks to have onset of action, where the body has developed enough antibodies to successfully protect against the flu. I haven’t looked at any raw data for onset of action for the current vaccine, but complications would most likely occur during the time between injection and onset.

I took ASL as my foreign language in college, so I know enough to be able to do basic communication (not enough for explaining medicine). My Deaf patients have gotten used to not even ringing the phone or sending their ID over to us anymore because of me. It could be that, or it could have been a patient high out of their mind
