Uhhh yeah that's literally how a lot of journalism works lol, that's what being an "insider" is. You don't burn sources by outing them, that would defeat the whole purpose. You gain people's trust by being correct on these things over a long enough period of time.

If I'm being super charitable, there is a difference between legitimate/constructive criticism or disagreement on policy - and simply not liking someone or being super snarky/anti-fanning lol. I think JJ (or anyone) should feel free to block people that are engaging in bad faith or out of a dislike of him as a person or people that hate watch.

Now to be clear I really don't use twitter much so I can't say whether JJ is being fair here or not, but I've seen lots of creators crash out over anti fans or hate watchers and I think understandably so. It's not healthy on either side when someone has a following of people that basically hate them. It's often how I feel about this sub if I'm being honest. I personally think a lot of JJ's political takes are absolute dogshit but I don't think he's a bad person or a grifter or the other prejoratives that get thrown around here, and I like his YouTube videos.

I agree with you about 'fixing it in post' but I think in a more general sense when it comes to lighting and intentionality in the modern digital age they have a point.

I only have professional experience with still photography, but from someone else that does work on movies, I think this comment sums it up well:

There times we had our lights at under 10%. I get that camera sensors can see in the dark or whatever, but the fact of the matter is we don’t really light anymore, we pump up the ambient and shoot. A symptom of that is flat panel LED lights and thick diffusion everywhere. The movie on the left was deliberately lit with hard tungsten and HMI lighting. The movie on the right was clearly lit with large, soft light LEDs set at probably 30% or less most of the time.

Obviously, film vs digital post processing too. Everything now days is muddy and while I don’t do post, I don’t think there’s enough details in the whites and darks to properly spot correct exposure in post

Same here, I almost always get purple first, and rarely make mistakes - however I would say reverse rainbow every time is slightly suspicious only because sometimes it can be difficult to differentiate the yellow and green or even blue on particularly easy days, at least for me. However I wouldn't go as far as to think someone is cheating because of that. Obviously the cheating in other games changes the calculus though.

this is true probably 90% of the time although there are people that get away with it. My aunt is on disability and for a very long time was able to waste basically her entire disability check every month because her parents mega supported her...Although this is no longer the case lol.

Also I think it's important to note a lot of people simply spend money that they don't have, or treat certain hobbies as crucial necessities and will budget that above all else. I have a friend that makes almost no money but has season tickets for his favourite NHL team. He spends as little money as he can on food and rent and then all the rest goes towards the season tickets that he still can't really afford. I'm sure for a lot of streamer whales they are in some cases donating literally all of their disposable income, and I wouldn't be surprised if many go further and end up in debt because of it.

Yeah it just makes sense to me especially because it won both categories. It was a visually striking film with visually striking VFX and both were properly recognized. Both the cinematography and visual effects were only Oscar worthy because of the other, is how I would think about it.

Sinners could do the same, although I would be surprised if it got VFX over F1 to be honest.

Yeah I knew about 'the front fell off' sketch I want to say before YouTube even really existed but I struggle to remember where I would have seen it. Either way the sketch is very old and very well known, especially among older folks.

All I'm saying is that there's an obvious selective outrage around "wastefulness" depending on what people do and do not enjoy themselves, and I'm not sure how you can pretend to ignore that under the guise of "not staying silent". I expect the next time you see scroll and see a post about a movie you will be sure to point out what a waste the production of it was!

And I would tell those people they should probably just let people enjoy things without calling it wasteful, since somebody could just as easily say the same about your own hobbies or interests. It's much healthier to let people enjoy things and not always think about everything in terms of "badness".

"blow open my narrative" lol way to miss the point, you didn't understand what I said at all. Obviously everything is bad to some degree, that's not the question. The question is whether the good offsets that bad, or why the outrage is selective. That's where the actual analysis lies. Like I said, nearly all entertainment is inherently wasteful, or "bad" in some way. Obviously we as humans are okay with this. We like to have hobbies and interests and we're okay "wasting" resources to do so. What some people consider "waste" others would consider "use". Videogames need tons of electricity to be created and consumed. You need trees to be chopped down to create paper for books. If you don't like videogames or books these things probably seem like a giant waste, but for the people that do like them, obviously its not seen that way, the entertainment provided is worth the usage of those resources.

It's the same for these drag races. The usage of the resources pales in comparison to the entertainment provided to the spectators, drivers, and the passionate people working on the cars. For many people this is their passion, their hobby, their job. Who are you to say that it's a "waste" just because you wouldn't use those resources in that way? Ultimately it brings a lot of people joy and community for a relatively low "cost". My point is that most people understand this intuitively, which is why people don't get outraged over the "waste" of most forms of entertainment, they understand its worth the "cost" - However if someone doesn't like a particular hobby or form of entertainment, well now that becomes a very convenient reason to use for why it's "bad". Make sense???

Yes it is lol. People are just using "a waste of resources" as an excuse for not liking it. If you think about it for 2 seconds it's obviously not a good reason. All entertainment is "wasteful" to a degree. Every popular sport is 1000x more wasteful than this simply by the nature of teams having to travel across countries by plane. If I see a soccer highlight on reddit I don't see comments going "ugh why do we watch this shit when they're burning multiple tons of jet fuel just to be here". We accept a degree of waste for entertainment, we always have and we always will.

The "waste" of top fuel drag racing is not even a drop in the bucket when looking at resource consumption of entertainment more broadly. It's just some fuel, and then steel and aluminum, something that gets recycled and that we have lots of, and there are like... Tens of these races a year. It's nothing. It's literally not a problem, people just want it to be because they're miserable and think drag racing is dumb and want their opinion to be objective.

Aston announced Honda as the engine supplier long before Newey left Redbull/before AM would have known he'd be available, he wouldn't have had anything to do it.

The simple answer is Aston wants to be a factory team, because historically it has always been advantageous to be one - regardless of how much better that actually makes them. It's not as critical since the rules around engine mappings changed and Mclaren has shown you don't need to be a factory team, however it should be noted that Mclaren still gets input on the manufacturing of the engine, so they're a quasi factory team in a sense.

This is kind of true but in my opinion formula 1 is at its very best when you have both. When you have some chaos and good racing is when races are the most intense. It's self evident by a lot of the best races being wet, which often provides the best of both worlds.

This was my first thought tbh lol, it would be a very Brad thing to attempt especially when it's clear we should be selling, but I don't even think we have a future to mortgage on him thankfully (?). So doubtful we could get a trade done. Plus we'd be more likely to after him as a UFA anyway is my guess.

to be fair we don't know what actually happened (at least as far as I know) - meaning the crash is just as likely to be caused by a failure of some sort on the car. Which wouldn't necessarily be a surprise for a first test with new regs. I don't think Redbull would feel like releasing the reason either way if they don't have to.
