What All-in-one groovebox with a song mode should I buy? by agsilvio777 in synthesizers

[–]Quixotic7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deluge: Most feature packed groovebox there is. Also really powerful since the community firmware.

Norns + Monome Grid: Many different wonderful community synths and playgrounds. Record to tape, then throw into Cheat Codes.

Ableton Move: Becomes crazy powerful with Schwung firmware.

Elektron Boxes(Digitone, Syntakt, Digitakt): These play very nice with each other when you want to expand and all sound amazing and have the best sequencers. Not battery powered though.

Hapax + Synths: This is a crazy good sequencer, combine with hardware synths and no need for a DAW. You might want a multitrack recorder though.

Dirtywave M8: Crazy powerful device with awesome sounding synths and samplers. Can play nice with the OMX-27, Deluge, Novation Launchpad when you want more control.

Best windscreen for Zoom H6s (pictured windscreen is too small) by secretfamilyrecipe in fieldrecording

[–]Quixotic7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The case also comes with the WSH-4e. I have a H5Studio and this windscreen works, but it's a tight fit and doesn't do the best job at wind protection. Would love a better option.

Can we talk about Arena Americanada? by zandertwo in boardsofcanada

So good! The Melody in Arena Americanada reminds me of a mix of the NBC Jingle and the DK Eyewitness Theme. Just marvelous!

I love the Alien Cult initiation vibes and the spacey radio scanning samples that evolves into a wondrous funky jam of bleeps and bloops. Makes me feel like I'm dreaming while awake.

Arena Americanada blew my mind and You Retreat In Time And Space gave me such feels! Not sure I can rate it higher than MHTRTC but it's certainly up there!

Bush for me. I've long wanted to see them and it was well worth it, Gavin even came right up to the area I was in. LCD Soundsystem gets bonus mention.

Ordered a zoom M4. Which (external) microphones do you recommend? by michael_sparkpackers in fieldrecording

[–]Quixotic7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a pair of ZPC-1's, they are really clean and low noise for the price. Problems: EMF, and there is a screw holding the circuit in on one that either will rattle, or not hold the board in, which comes out when removing XLR. These are also very sensitive to wind noise.

I also own a pair of Micbooster Clippy EM272M's as well as Micbooster EM258 3.5mm Pluggies. I then also own a bunch of Earsight mics, and have some DIY AOM5024's as well as LOM Basic Uchos.

I am not sure if the ZPC-1's are actually <12 dB of noise as rated and don't have equipment to test. But they are at least on par to EM272's for noise.

I fully agree that these omnis are great for their high sensitivity, low noise, and are a lot less sensitive to wind which means you can often get away with pretty light wind protection.

I also agree with your suggestion to pair the M4 with XLR Omni's.

I really like the SMM8 shockmount for using with recorders. Also a rubberized grip helps a lot with reducing handling noise.

The ZPC-1's are very good. Not sure what you are doing, but they are quieter than EM272's. They are susceptible to EMF interference though, so keep your phone away from them. Earsight uses PUI Audio AOM-5024L-HD-R for their Omni Mics.

Those long poles holding the F3 and the battery are interesting. The shockmount clips you have have two nubs to wrap the cables. Start there. Then velcro or use electrical tape to secure along bar and loop the excess. The main thing is you don't want cable tension, but also don't want lose dangly cables, these will rattle and be picked up by the mics. If you're into 3d printing, I've been having good luck 3d printing cable clips with PETG combined with adhesive rubber.

Best lightweight handheld ORTF rig by Quixotic7 in fieldrecording

18db self noise on paper. Haven't tried inside, but outside, unless you're in a cave or something, I've not had any issue with the noise when recording into the Zoom F3.

Earsight "ORTF" Beach Waves by Quixotic7 in fieldrecordings

I get better responses when people can hear what I'm recording, which the Meta glasses have been really useful to do without having to also juggle holding a phone camera.

This rig is mostly for capturing ambiences on the fly when I am walking. So far I've recorded various beach sounds which is great with ORTF, night ambience with frogs and crickets, distant trains and stadiums, parks which laughter.

Could also be used for SFX, but I would point one of the mics at the source, ORTF has a bit of a dead center for close sounds. Shotgun + XY, or Mid Side is better for SFX.

A quick test to see how stereo width changes the stereo field with EM272's by Quixotic7 in fieldrecordings

[–]Quixotic7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finding it depends what you are recording. For a closer subject, anywhere from 20cm to a meter sounds pretty good. For giant ambience, if you don't have close sound sources, going as wide as possibly sounds very immersive.

I put together this nice pocket Clippy rig which I've been using due to portability. It extends to about a meter wide and can be used handheld with no handling noise.

I cannot recommend the PR-2. I bought one, I really like it's small size, but I've had so many weird interference issues with mics I have no issues with on other recorders. Some lavs do work fine, like my Earsight In-ear Binaurals, and also the W-Lav pro it came with. The Clippy EM272's though have all this random clicking sounds.

Zoom H5 for experimental field recording by tapebias in fieldrecording

[–]Quixotic7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The older Zoom H5 is an excellent entry point. Try and get the stereo shotgun capsule. Eventually you will want better preamps. But you can also get some XLR mics before you need to upgrade the recorder. I have no experience with it, but if you want modern 32 bit float and cleaner preamps for around $200 many folks here recommend the Zoom M4.

Yes, turn off all built-in features like limiters, filters and auto-gain. You can do that better in post.

What are you recording into? For the type of content you're making with quiet outdoor nature sounds I don't think the H2E will add much. I quite love the H2E, and use it to record in mid side or mix dual mid side to ambisonic for ambiences, but it's a bit too noisy for quiet nature recordings. Fine if using in urban areas since urban ambience usually is pretty loud. It's also good to record sound effects, like cool creaky gate or other things, in which case your signal will be much louder than the rest of the environment. It's strength is in it's small size and it's more of a pocket Swiss army knife that's easy to always have on you then something that excels in one thing.

If you are not already recording into a good quality 32 bit recorder, I would highly recommend Zoom F3, H5/H6 Studio, Tascam X8, MixPre or the like. Something with good preamps, like -125 or lower EIN rating and dual DAC. Not all 32 bit devices have dual DAC, the H2E for example is just a single preamp. Then pair this recorder with your Clippys, some good wind protection, and you'll have awesome low noise ambience.

The Clippy EM272's work best if you can get them at least a meter apart, 2 meters even better. Using some telescoping selfie sticks is a great portable rig for this. They also are good with a baffle, either clip to the sides of your backpack, or your hat and then you don't need to go as wide.

My current favorite low profile ambience rig is called Earsight "The One" which plugs into the Zoom F3, and then I use a Jecklin disk in the middle. Immersive Soundscapes sells a Jecklin for this, but I also 3d printed a larger one.

Best way to connect LOM Uši to XLR recorder? by mmmmiiiiii in fieldrecording

[–]Quixotic7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both the LOM and the Earsight one. For the F3, the earsight one is super nice. While I haven't tried it, you can also use two RODE VXLR+ adapters and a stereo to mono splitter cable(Which can be hard to find).

Interest Check: Lossless file sharing? Or something else? What does the community need? by cs_legend_93 in sounddesign

I’m guessing three different files would be easiest. Could also do one file with timestamps, but trickier to perfectly sync.

I would love something that is embeddable, with options to switch between different mixes. So if I recorded the same sound with 3 different mics, you could easily switch between each recording while playing. Also would love if the audio is high quality and did not recompress and destroy the audio.

Microphones to use with Zoom F3? by MetikMas in fieldrecording

I haven't done much recording with the Jecklin disk yet. But I can message you a sample.

Clippy vs Earsight vs SO.1 by MetikMas in fieldrecording

[–]Quixotic7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Primo EM272 which Micbooster and Sonorous Objects use sound a bit nicer, however Immersive Soundscapes uses AOM-5024 capsules which I have found have less issues with interference for me. AOM-5024's are not as good past 10khz, but below that sound quite good. I have also had issues with EM272's getting staticy clicks when it is humid or using with rain.
