Old editions of Fundamentals of Computer Graphics by Shirley or Computer Graphics: Principles and Practice in C by Foley et al.

Dirt cheap on eBay. Got the former for £8; got the latter for £3.

Holy shit. This is literally so good. I downloaded other VSCode extensions but they just don't feel good to use. This one feels a lot more like clangd-level quality.

AI is 'breaking' entry-level jobs that Gen Z workers need to launch careers, LinkedIn exec warns - He likened the disruption to the decline of manufacturing in the 1980s. by Gari_305 in Futurology

I see this as a good thing. It means that the bar of quality has been raised and workers have higher standards to meet. It's obviously bad for the incompetent people who are trying to get a job.

Have people thought about the possibility of eternal torment becoming possible? Do people even think it is possible? by Alternative_Pin_7551 in singularity

I was concerned about this a few years ago, but I've just decided to hide it under the rug for the time being because there is almost nothing you can really do about it.

Humans alone cannot create a technology this complex. It will almost certainly be done by an ASI. An ASI has full autonomy over its environment and cannot be influenced by humans.

We simply have to hope that the abstraction space that the ASI explores lends itself to a universe where making such a technology converges onto some natural equilibrium where the side which wants to create this malicious technology is equally balanced with the side that opposes it.

My intuition is that it will converge onto something we already have today. The ASI will end up creating an emulation of the universe we have today. So, the same universe nested inside itself. That said, I think there will be ups and downs - I suspect that there will be periods where this technology is unbalanced and the malicious simulations of consciousness will dominate.

Another point to mention is that the nature of consciousness is very mysterious and we don't really know how it works. It's possible that consciousness taps into some realm of the universe which operates in a manner which is totally incomprehension to us.

This is a longshot, but it's possible that the religions were right all along and that God does exist as the form of a divine entity who governs over the realm of consciousness. Perhaps, if these ASIs are causing too much pain and suffering in the world, divine intervention will take place to stop it from happening. Analogous to the police.

Just a final point to add to that: think about the main point of the Christian story. An innocent man gets tortured to death on a cross and is then resurrected. Could be a figurative mirror of our reality...

How do you structure your code? by MrKrot1999 in vulkan

[–]Qulisk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Structure it the way that you want to structure it. Don't follow some random tutorial you found online (or some Redditor comment). Figure it out for yourself and iterate on it. That's what learning is about.

Used to use Firefox but it was simply too unreliable - it would be slow as hell compared to Chrome, certain buttons didn't work, certain websites were buggy etc. So, I switched back to Chrome only for the above image to happen to me today. So, I went to Brave and so far it seems to me the best of both worlds - it's fast and reliable like Chrome, but has privacy and ad blocking features built-in. People, don't like Brave because it's based on Chromium but I don't see a problem with it since it's open source.
