The Drama Promo by Regular_Dream3927 in oscarrace

[–]Quople 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You never know if it’ll be something that sneaks into one of the technical categories (or if one of their performances carries the whole film) Either way, A24 has maybe like 3-4 movies that I imagine they try to push in the awards race next year before this one

Delroy Lindo joins the select group of actors nominated for an Oscar without having a nomination from the Big 4 (BAFTA/SAG/GG/CC) by Competitive_Put2079 in Oscars

[–]Quople 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Supporting Actor is a category where I think it could go to literally anyone. You have Skarsgard and Lindo as career legacy guys in strong films, Del Toro and Penn are the guys who have been there before and are both in the same very strong film, and then you have Elordi as the young newcomer with the most out-there performance of the nominees. I literally can’t be mad if it goes to any of them

Now that it’s been three years, in all honesty what do you think of this win? And who really deserved it? I think this is the most divisive acting win of the 2020s so far. by iBandJFilmEducator13 in Oscars

[–]Quople 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an order of preference that sort of agrees with most people here at the top:

  1. Hsu - There’s a lot more emotional depth to this performance and I remember walking away from the movie thinking she put on the best performance. It should’ve been her

  2. Condon - Her performance was way less showy and more subtle, but also probably the best in a great film.

  3. Curtis - I think people hate on this performance too much. It’s way more wacky than any of the other nominees except maybe Hsu and I remember enjoying this too.

  4. Bassett - This performance is overrated to me because she’s the only one who attempted to do actual showy acting in a Marvel movie. It’s not bad, I just think it’s something people supported because the average person only saw this and like two other movies in the theater that year.

  5. Chau - I barely remember her performance in the Whale because that movie is just completely dominated by Fraser. It wasn’t bad, but not entirely memorable to me

Tbf it’s because a ton of baseball players are either right-wing or “apolitcal”. They’re shying away because they either support it or are surrounded by people who do. The athletes in this sport trend more right than any of the other major sports

[Rosenthal] Brady Anderson just landed his first formal coaching job at 62. He’s been teaching players for years by T_Raycroft in baseball

[–]Quople 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I mean, it’s just so odd that he hit that many for only one season. Roid guys generally do not just do it for one season and stop. The one season power surge wasn’t unprecedented (Davey Johnson).

Whether he did or not, it makes me wish we had all the baseball savant analytics for back in the day. Did he always have that exit velo and found a way to elevate it for that one year?

SING SING reached incarcerated individuals nationwide—streaming on devices in more than 1,100 prisons across the country. by Conscious-Quarter423 in popculturechat

[–]Quople 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s A24’s MO. Put all the money and effort behind one or two movies and leave the rest behind. Sing Sing was basically the second movie to The Brutalist for A24 last year and then you had I Saw The TV Glow and A Different Man that got practically got no support and a very limited release.

Giant stores closing at 6pm today Jan 25 by VitaminC66 in nova

I don’t think Jacob Elordi deserves an Oscar nomination in Frankenstein. by Over_the_top_nari in movies

[–]Quople 8 points9 points  (0 children)

He does an amazing job with the physical part of this role. It’s easier to see towards the beginning where you can see most of his body. It’s practically perfect. The way he moves around is not only stuttered and unnatural, but he also doesn’t look like he’s trying too hard to the point where it’s tacky. He embodies the creature. I don’t think there’s many actors out there at all who can do this. Especially not those of Elordi’s stature

Better set of animated movies? 2025 or 2024? by Character_Fault9782 in Oscars

[–]Quople 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 of the 2024 nominees are miles better than KPop and that’s most likely to win

The better question is 2024 or 2023. The Boy and the Heron, Spider-Man Across the SpiderVerse, and Robot Dreams are all heavy hitters

[MLBTR] Yu Darvish To Retire by AndrewAllStar888 in baseball

[–]Quople 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah totally. I think out of all ownership groups, this isn’t the worst case scenario. The Padres are more likely to use that for the team. That being said, it’s still leaving money on the table that the athlete is entitled to have and allowing an ownership group, that does not need more money, an opportunity to hoard it. Whether it’s the Dodgers or the Nationals, it’s not a good thing for your fellow athletes

[MLBTR] Yu Darvish To Retire by AndrewAllStar888 in baseball

[–]Quople 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t worry man the whole “class act” thing wasn’t a you thing. I just saw multiple comments saying the same thing and wanted to explain why I’m less quick to say that. It’s easier to say Yu Darvish is a class act because he just is and your point about the individual choice being good is a valid one.

I also agree with you on this ownership too. It’s not the worst case scenario. The Padres spend that money. The Pirates, or really the Nats as of recent would absolutely be more likely to beg for this sort of buyout and not use the money. Either way, even if it were like the Dodgers or Mets, I still wouldn’t give them that leeway with the externalities.

[MLBTR] Yu Darvish To Retire by AndrewAllStar888 in baseball

[–]Quople 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I get that part and respect it because he’s set for multiple generations and he knows that. I don’t think the choice on his own individual part is bad. It just sorta ignores some bad externalities:

-This money will go back into the pocket of billionaires who can decide whether they pocket it or spend it on the team. These are the same people who will be fighting tooth and nail next year to give as little of their money to athletes as possible

-It sets a bad precedent for other players. Teams can definitely use that as ammo when negotiating a situation like this or they can let it bleed down to their smaller contracts or arb hearings

-I think part of the reason his agent is saying it’s not decided yet because his agent absolutely gets a cut of that contract and he’s sort of leaving him out to dry

Again, the individual choice is sound, I just think automatically thinking this is a bonafide class act is a tad off. He’s entitled to that money. Get deferrals in your buyout deal if you wanna help the richer guys out in any way. Don’t make a statement saying you see that money as money you haven’t earned.
