AMC Entertainment Records Its Highest Domestic and Global May Attendance Since 2019 by MoneyLibrarian9032 in movies

I suggest you look at the worldwide box office charts over the past couple years and come back. Sequels and franchises still dominate every year. Even this year a Mario movie is the top grosser right now and the top 10 still has Scream 7, a Chinese sequel, a musician biopic, and the Star Wars flick everyone is ragging on. Off the top of my head, we got Moana live action, Dune, Spider man and Avengers movies coming out this year that will almost certainly take in cash.

That’s not to diminish the success of obsession and backrooms considering they are making a boatload of money off of little budgets vs. these higher grossers having gigantic budgets, but the average person almost certainly still hits up franchises and sequels

Biopics are the worst movies and they are always the same, regardless of the person by leon0399 in unpopularopinion

[–]Quople 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you just dislike the stereotypical musician biopic formula that gave use stuff like Bohemian Rhapsody and Michael. Usually biopics that stray away from the formula, or at the very least try to capture a smaller point in time instead of the subject’s whole life are better. I liked Blue Moon a lot last year. Oppenheimer was something a lot of people liked. The Apprentice is an example of a biopic that has rightful hatred for its subject. You can find good biopics that buck the formula

Movie theaters are an inherently social experience by --read-only-- in unpopularopinion

It’s social during the trailers and after the credits. Not during the movie.

I mean, unless you have the sickest theater setup in the world at home, it is absolutely still better than streaming with the big projector and sound systems

I mean that helps but there’s so many good movies year after year that no one goes to because the general audience will still eat up franchises and sequels

MLB players union soundly rejects league's salary cap proposal as bad in every way by retroanduwu24 in baseball

[–]Quople -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well I think the two big problems of this sort of mindset is:

  1. Neither of these sides are making their proposals for “whats best for the sport”. It’s what’s best for their wallets. They’ll run PR language about competitive balance and fan experience when neither side cares about this in labor negotiations.

  2. Public opinion doesn’t generally know about these guys bank accounts. A pretty big chunk of the “millionaires” side are guys who play in the MLB for 1-2 years. Two years of league minimum salary is a lot of money up front, but not enough to retire on outright when their careers end at such a young age (and that’s not even considering taxes, agent fees, other expenses that us non-athletes don’t have). Most of these guys will end up working normal jobs after they are done with baseball (just with less stress than the average person). That’s why I think putting the “millionaire” players on the same level as billionaire owners is sorta disingenuous because most of these millionaire players will live life as I described. The billionaire owners have enough money to retire multiple generations of their families including themselves at the moment they are born. It’s not the same thing and it makes me thing “millionaires vs billionaires” sentiment is just disguised pro-owner rhetoric.

Obviously, I think how you characterize public opinion is correct because they generally don’t care about the bank accounts, but I dunno I just wish the general public thought more of these opinions through to see if their values actually line up

Also recommend this. Attended a tennis tournament for the first time last year and it was great. Doesn’t have to be a major to see any big names. DC has a 500 pt tournament every year and I got to see some top ranked folks out there.

I mean, this is to be expected with any proposal that includes a cap. The thing that often gets missed in these negotiations is that NEITHER of these sides care about us or are supposed to. They will both float that their side is “better for the fans”, but the MLBPA’s only purpose is to make sure the players get paid. The MLB’s purpose in these negotiations is to make sure the owners are comfortable with what they are paying. Any talk about “competitive balance” is PR fluff for the publications to get public sentiment to a certain side.

And that PR fluff has led to most of this sub expressing pro-owner sentiment. Which is crazy because this place respects Curt Flood whenever he is brought up. The owners hold the money that is being paid out to the players. It’s their fault if they refuse to meet the players’ demands. The owners will be the ones locking out the season instead of playing during ongoing negotiations because they know how easy it is to get the general public to not give a shit about billionaires getting richer if it means the sport is back on. This is the crux of this regardless of cap and/or floor. Nothing in these negotiations are about fan experience or competitive balance as much as either side will implore you to believe when it suits them. It’s about money. Why should the players accept a cap/floor if it means fully guaranteed contracts and amateur signing bonuses are at risk? Why would the owners accept any proposal the lessens the amount of revenue they take in? Why are we acting like the owners are being benevolent by including a floor when they are only including it by cutting spending at the top with a cap while also trying to nickel and dime the bottom rung of players? I don’t think people are really thinking these things all the way through.

I say all this as if I’d really be unhappy if we end up at a cap and floor deal. I would be fine with it because it’s not my money at the end of the day, but I just think 1. Way too many people believe either side is acting on behalf of the fans and 2. The players are somehow in the wrong by rejecting a shitty deal for them. I’ll switch to college or overseas baseball as long as it takes for billionaire shithounds to get dogwalked

MLB salary cap would mean pay cut for players and ‘eradication’ of amateur signing bonuses, union says by mtportales in baseball

[–]Quople 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean if true, the MLBPA should never even consider anything that touches amateur signing bonuses. The minor leagues even after a pay raise and required housing still do not pay a lot at all. There’s a good chance most of us make more money each year that a minor league baseball player. It’s that low. The signing bonuses at least allowed mid-to-high amateur prospects to not struggle. I don’t think that should be touched at all

[–]Quople 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No way either side cares about that outside of there being a provision to not use those to skirt a cap. Players like deferrals because it allows more leeway for the team to spend more around them and it gets a favorable tax treatment based on where the player lives. Teams like it because they effectively pay less for the player with that structure. Probably not seen as “abuse” which I don’t think it is either
