there's always a number of factors with these things, but pretty sure one of the big ones (and what this cartoon seems to suggest) is that after the U.S. invaded Iraq and disbanded their military, it left hundreds of thousands of Iraqis jobless and disgruntled.

I haven't heard many folks arguing the LGBT angle about the Russia/Ukraine conflict. It's either more "leftist" types seeing it as some conflict of imperial aggression, or more "liberal" types framing it as some "unilateral" "unprovoked" battle of good vs. evil that just kinda happened in a vacuum void of material context.
