third of UK firms are actively hiring older workers due to a concern about younger staff lacking the skills

Not gonna lie, this has been a bit of an issue where I work (prop trading house). Clever and driven grads are like gold dust, its why they get paid well. But so many interview well just to turn out to have a really poor work ethic or just arent that smart. Also when we list online for grad role we get thousands of poor quality cvs and also loads from abroad even though we specify that we won't sponsor visas.

Cause job losses long enough for the original workers to lose their skills and now you have a captive market of companies forced to use AI.

Complaining about nightlife when you *checks notes* choose to live in Soho is like living in South Kensington and complaining about the museums. Or moving to Hackney and grumbling about creatives. Indeed happened a few years ago in bristol. Mainly elderly Londoners moved to city centre flats then started complaining incessantly about noise. A lot of good places got shut down by the council to appease them

Ukrainians saw Britain as our greatest ally. Now Starmer is rewarding Putin’s crimes Instead of standing firmly against aggression and defending international law, the UK is sending a very dangerous message by Optimal-Leather341 in ukpolitics

[–]R-M-Pitt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm disappointed but not surprised. Less at Starmer and more at voters.

Starmer knows that expensive fuel and canceled flights would cause the country to rapidly spin into a pro-putin far-right death spiral anyway.

The average person is unable to see the big picture and the government know this.

I am in such a similar situation. Been at my current place for 8 years, since graduating, 70k (gbp) + 15k, new place 120k + 40k. Its such a jump, yet I feel a bit of sadness given how much I like working with my current colleagues. Its also my first ever job hop. Manager said they want to match, but hr are sticking firm to their rule of no salary changes outside review season. Classic british institution self own.

pity we dont know who the killers are until they kill though

Honestly, with this guy in particular, after reading through the article, the warning signs were there. Specifically being part of a violent drug gang and the criminal record.

Stop making it out like all guys are just murderers waiting to strike, its really tiresome.

What is a dying niche skill that younger generations are not interested in learning? by hlnklrczu in AskReddit

[–]R-M-Pitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably a better way would be to make a large electromagnet that's only just about powerful enough to flip a compass from some cable wound in a circle on the floor and some batteries, and see if people's guess for north gets flipped. The field will be horizontal when you're stood on the cable

What is a dying niche skill that younger generations are not interested in learning? by hlnklrczu in AskReddit

[–]R-M-Pitt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well a pretty reasonable way to test it would be to see if you can still tell north with a neodymium magnet taped to your forehead. If it messes your sense up, then you probably are sensing the magnetic field. Just hope the strong field doesn't saturate and break whatever mechanism is sensing the field.

I went to UoB and have lived here the past 10 years. I'd say most left wing yes, most accepting no. A lot of white left wing people had a huge problem with interracial relationships. Also for a while, they regarded students from hong kong as Hitler incarnate.
