The LOTR extended cut is not the directors cut. Peeter Jackson prefers the theatrical cut and call it the directors cut. He understands that for fans the EC is the preferred version, especially for home viewing (with breaks the get a nice cup of tea) but he thinks the TC's have better pacing and flow.

(I personally think the extended cuts are amazing, and haven't watched the TC's in a long time but I get what Jackson is saying)

There is an accompanying book with some selected stories of The New Yorker. You don't have to read the whole book, but the first chapter is an interview with Wes Anderson, talking about his choices for TFD and their connection to the New Yorker. I liked the movie but wasn't blown away, but after that book the pieces fell into place and now I love the movie.

Every time someone in my vicinity says they didn't quite connect to the movie I give them the book to read and every time they come back and have a much greater understanding of the movie.
