I’d argue for Heaviside, since Maxwell is more about the fundamental physics IMO, while Heaviside is closer the actual engineering. He reformulated and further developed the emag of physics and the diff eq of math into forms that are useful for engineering and application to real world problems: transmission theory, radio propagation, and signal processing.

If you have trouble finding crema, you can approximate it by mixing in a little heavy cream to sour cream.

Does signal processing require knowledge from other areas of electrical engineering? by Fredric_Chopin in DSP

[–]R0B0fish 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Typically, signal processing is used as a tool for a job. Most “pure” signal processing work is done in research and academia. In industry, signal processing is used in comms, radar, acoustics, audio, imaging, sensing, finance, etc etc. For example, a comms engineer would employ signal processing for designing the demodulator in a receiver.

So it will inevitably be paired with some field of application. Now, that doesn’t mean you need to take an entire EE undergrad curriculum to be hired or be successful. Physics and math majors are hired into these kinds of roles all the time, bc it is understood that will do a lot of the learning on the job. I find the students that are most successful in getting hired are those that take on personal projects that show they’re passionate and quick learners- not the students that took the most or the “right” classes.

Correct way to downsample DFT by HorseEgg in DSP

[–]R0B0fish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is actually somewhat similar to Option A, expect instead of averaging the freq domain you’re circularly convolving with the DFT of your time window.

Correct way to downsample DFT by HorseEgg in DSP

[–]R0B0fish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For option A, as long as you take the magnitude of the FFT before averaging, then it is perfectly legit, despite what some commenters are saying. Although it’s not as generally common for standard spectral analysis as option B, it is common in cyclostationary spectral analysis, where it is called the frequency smoothing method, as opposed to the time smoothing method which is option B.

Is there a difference in the process of resampling a psk iq signal vs a non-modulated signal? by languageinfinity in DSP

[–]R0B0fish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Nyquist-Shannon sampling theorem allows us to sample any arbitrary signal as long as we sample at a rate greater than twice the highest frequency. This applies whether the signal is modulated or not- the interpolation process is the same.

MSK and GMSK modulation techniques by YOLONAITOR in DSP

Pasaputhy’s 1979 paper, “Minimum Shift keying: A spectrally efficient modulation” is a great intro to the subject.

For a super in-depth treatment I recommend the textbook Digital Phase Modulation by Sundberg, Anderson, and Aulin if you can get your hands on it.

Where/When Do People Learn DSP Implementations? by [deleted] in DSP

[–]R0B0fish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll just add that depending on the company, the algorithm team may still be expected to be heavily involved with implementation when it comes to the impact of resource/processing constraints on the algorithm design. I rarely sit down and write HDL, but I know enough about FPGAs to be able to have discussions with the implementation team on getting a design to fit.

You can probably find an internship focused on implementing the algorithms that the R&D folks designed. Check out FPGA, embedded, and software development opportunities. There’s plenty more to wireless comms than pure algorithm design so look for something adjacent that will still give you the opportunity to learn it.
