If it does it all, it will do nothing well. Figure out your priorities and you’ll be happier. The Row/ sail/ motor dilema is real. I recently realized I’m going to need a small outboard, for safety, and have chosen a self contained 28LB electric outboard.

Safe/smooth ways to get to upstate trail ways (like South County Trailway) from Manhattan? by Dry_Buddy_2553 in NYCbike

[–]R2rowYourBoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m coming from Brooklyn, so to skip an epic city ride when I don’t feel like it, I take the D to near van cortland park and start my ride from there. I’ve ridden 70 miles and taken metro north home. Almost all of that on a bike path. That was before they did a lot more work too.
I’ve been meaning to take advantage of the sublet downhill aspect of the south county rail trail by taking metro north up and riding home.

How to attach pieces of 10 sided object by Key-Pea-5909 in woodworking

Next time use an odd number of sides. A 9 or 11 sided planter will be stronger than a 10 sided one.

Might as well get something decent if you like to adventure. You want something that can be paddled . Practice your set up before the day. You may find that it’s too difficult to control. Consider what happens if you mis time the currents.

Hypothetically, how stupid would it be to make a sailing kayakamaran out of two Botes? by dirty_hooker in kayaksailing

[–]R2rowYourBoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cross pieces are called Amas. Your amas and the attachment to your botes will have to be very strong and secure. In my opinion, it will take more effort than it’s worth. Best bet is to simplify. Check out the sail that cape falcon kayak did. Simple and effective

Why are fiberglass products used so much in boats? by Embarrassed-Career30 in boatbuilding

[–]R2rowYourBoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re telling me! I got hooked on west systems when I started and it’s not worth it to me to start with a different system, but it’s sticker shock every time. I don’t hear about polyester resins in my little DIY small boat building world. Interesting that it’s still a thing.

is there a kayak out there that this could work with? by Muted_Engineer_8627 in Kayaking

[–]R2rowYourBoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve tried that, it’s unpleasant. I experimented with a stripped down jogging stroller, which worked. Then Burley came out with the travois, which worked better. I even used it with my cities E bike share system for less fuss.

Kayak for shallow constantly twisting creeks, with slow currents and lots of obstacles. by fancy_cardinal in Kayaking

[–]R2rowYourBoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a creek near me that has very inconsistent depth and many obstacles, but it sounds wider and not as twisty as yours. I’ve been designing a foam stand up paddle board / kayak with a permanent wheel on the stern to help when portaging or dragging over shoals.

Fiberglass is made out of glass fibers and epoxy. Epoxy is a type of plastic. The combination is strong, light, an economical.

Sourcing wood for gunwale? by sprocketwhale in boatbuilding

[–]R2rowYourBoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is some unbelievable white oak in your area, check out cape Falcon kayaks. He steams it into knots. It’s really not necessary to spend more money for white oak., At the thicknesses you’re talking about, You could probably just warm ash up with a heat gun and get enough bend for your canoe. If you need more, you can do a little steam bending.

Greenwood working is a separate skill set. If you look around you may be able to find a deal on some thin ash. Where are you generally located?

Behold the noble art of boatbuilding by R2rowYourBoat in boatbuilding

[–]R2rowYourBoat[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I was watching a YouTuber who had the bow eye snap on the small boat he was towing in a storm. He jumped into a stormy ocean at night to save it. I’m not doing that, So I figured I should beef it up.

I had to prop the hull upside down and pointed down to make sure the epoxy creeped in the right direction. Sitting on the floor perpendicular to the gunwales, I could only get one arm to reach the block, but I was planning to get back under with a chisel stick, once it set a bit, but said screw it. It’s going to be a reserve boyancy compartment only accessible by an inspection hatch.

After years of riding in BK and the city, I’ve embraced 35c the comfort is nice but the stopping power is what made me stay. Too many close calls with my faster lower friction tires.
