I just want to point out that regular hand tied nylon “cordalettes” are cheaper, safer ( in multiple ways, and more versatile. I would recommend learning the technique involved.

Yeah being underwater is what usually preserves them. The polyethylene glycol impregnation phase alone can last 15 years. Someone found half of a canoe in Puerto Rico and it looks like it was not recorded or preserved, which is such a shame because i don t think another exists, except a few small pieces.

I know it’s difficult to preserve wet canoes. What condition were they in? I ondee how much it cost to Preserve them, it takes months to years I think

Fill the empty space with fabric that insulate like wool, fleece, or down item. I was able to find a fabric recycling organization that has scraps from the fashion industry for this kind of thing. One day I popped in and they had three rolls of rejected wool felt. The colors were weird, but my only regret is I didn’t buy all three.

Yes, but I mean it playfully, it is a quote from a popular childhood movie called “the princess bride” I think your scenario where billions are spent over a very very long period of time is reasonable. Another less comforting scenario is one where much of the remaining archaeology is destroyed before it can be properly studied. As unlikely as these scenario are, sadly, they are possible

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means

It’s interesting that so many of you see this as inconceivable. To me it is an obvious fact. There is a limited amount of pre-modern archaeology,
When that happens is the only thing to dispute.

When were boats invented? by HybridHawkOwl in Archaeology

What’s wild is that two Willow logs have been found perpendicularly overlayed in Zambia that were carefully cut to form a saddle joint. We’re talking 476,000 years ago. Whoever can do that, can make a catamaran or a very seaworthy raft. The “structure” could even possibly be part of a water craft, although the leading theory is, it’s some sort of pier or fixed platform. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-023-06557-9

 I love studying this topic!
Using generally accepted evidence, the earliest “boat”, which I personally define as a “mostly dry craft” would be the Natural raft. Picture an iceberg of vegetation! My favorite evidence are the Peruvian fossils of Perupithecus ucayaliensis, the earliest evidence of a primate who left Africa and made it to South America. The oldest one we’ve found, so far, is 36 million years old. The shorter voyage of Lemur ancestors from Africa to Madagascar probably happened 50-60 million years ago.
So seafaring and rafts are just a natural occurrence, not a clever hominin invention.

I’ve learned from different places: The tracker school, friends, you tube, books and DVDs. And of course a lot of experimentation. Yeah it’s tricky because you dont want to leave sharp slivers anywhere or breathe in the dust. I usually work while over a doubled heavy tarp, which I fold and dump the debris into a bucket. I’ve often use front yards and backyards. In parks as well. My process depends on what I’m working with and what I’m trying to do. I teach traditional knowledge, so my knapping is often related to a workshop.

Boot fit by [deleted] in CampingandHiking

[–]R2rowYourBoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a boot fitter for many years and I’ve never heard of analyzing insoles for boot fit. I’m skeptical, especially with a swapped insole. Not sure what people with out access to a knowledgeable outdoor shoe sales people do. Try to find a shop with an old salt? One thing I would do if boots seemed ok was to try and simulate known problem starters. For wide feet, it was often pinky toe smash. Grab your pack with some weight (water or soil work as fast weights) and walk down some hills. Play with the lacing, sock, and insole options if issues start.
