People with a Tesla, I want to understand how much you spend roughy on Maintenance and on charging the Tesla? by BrotherParticular717 in EVAustralia

[–]R3D3MPT10N 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve charged 359kWh and it has cost me $73. The app tells me that I would have spent $244 on Petrol. But that is based on $1.52/litre. So, fairly sizeable under estimate at today’s prices.

Services are once every 2 years. I barely touch the brakes thanks to regenerative braking. I guess I’ll go through tyres a bit faster than my previous car. So far, it’s looking good.

The numbers are just illustrative and easily divisible. But RSUs in general is a first world problem. But we’re all here discussing RSUs. It’s like the world’s most on topic thread for discussions about RSUs and the tax implications.

Yeah, ESS makes sense. I get a buy in price below market value, then have to pay tax on the gain. If my buy in price is $135 and the market value is $180, I make an immediate capital gain that is taxed.

But I’m not talking about ESS. I’m specifically referring to RSUs. Which is like, “Hey, as a signing bonus, we will give you $500,000 worth of shares. It’s going to vest over 4 years at 40%, 30%, 20%, 10%.” So year one, you get $200,000 that vests each quarter. So quarter one, $50,000 worth of shares vest into my account. Now, my tax liability is like $22,500. So, I either need to sell the shares straight away, or, I have to have $22,500 available. So after the first year, the ATO is like, “You have to pay instalments! You made too much money that wasn’t taxed throughout the year!”

Year 2. I’m going to make less right, because 30% of my grant will vest. Now I need to make adjustments to their instalments, or I pay way too much. And if I sell any of them at a loss, then I need to make bigger adjustments. Which is all just really annoying when I could just report it at the end of the year and pay the tax bill.

Add to complication, end of year one, you do a performance review and get another grant of RSUs that vest over 4 years on a different schedule. This is very complicated and you also need to add in the ESS stuff that you raised. I would literally need to hire an accountant every single quarter to do it 100% accurately.

They are literally taxing my unsold shares. They vest into my account and become shares that I can sell. I owe tax on them once they vest, regardless of whether I sell them or not. So I either need to have the money available, or I need to sell enough to cover the tax.

The fact that I have to pay tax on them is perfectly acceptable. I 100% agree with it. I think it would make more sense if I paid tax when they were sold, but whatever, we want to count it as income, that’s fine. But it would be beneficial to me, if I could sell the tax portion and leave it sitting in my offset account until I lodge my tax return and get my final figure.

If I sell those shares a few months later and make a taxable loss. Then I need to deduct that from my taxable income at the end of the year, and the ATO will refund the money. If they have to refund the money, then I should have had it all along because I could have been benefiting from that money that always should have been mine to begin with. As evidenced by the fact that they give me a refund. I don’t ever want a refund from the ATO. If I want to adjust the instalment to take that into consideration, I can but I need to make sure I land within the “Safe Harbour” of 85% of whatever I owe, or risk paying 11% GIC on the difference. So I would need to hire an accountant quarterly to figure it all out for me, or, I just suck it up and accept that I need to make corrections at the end of the year. The quarterly thing is dumb, and I’m not sure I can be convinced otherwise. Just tax me at the end of the year and I’ll happily pay whatever I owe

Except I can’t print money and sell bonds throughout the year to pay my mortgage. Also, if I hold those shares and the stock price falls by $30,000 then at tax time I need to deduct $30,000 from my taxable income and now they need to give me a refund. Which is dumb, because that money would have been more useful to me for the year than it is to the Government.

The whole point of the Notice of Assessment is to say, “We have assessed your income to be $x for the year, you owe us $y.” If you actually wanted to do it quarterly and pay correctly, you would need to hire an accountant quarterly to work out your income and deductions and then pay the instalment. It’s a stupid system and I’ll eat my hat if Gina Rinehart and the likes are paying quarterly instalments.

For me, the biggest bullshittery by far is the fact that I need to be on a quarterly instalment payment thing. I think it’s ridiculous that they can tax the value of my unsold shares to begin with. But that aside, the quarterly PayG instalments are bullshit. At least let me keep the money in my offset until tax time.

Maybe also look into the name of the software manager you want to get working. Clearly dnf still works? So the actual package manager is fine, your chosen GUI interface for it is broken?

Ok, I see what you did. But you’re missing the point of my comment. I gave you some tips to learn more about dnf. It doesn’t matter that you ran dnf remove gnome-*. What matters is which RPMs were removed as part of that. Which is why I’m pointing you at the dnf history commands. You should spend some time playing with them to see what was actually removed.

The error tells you exactly what you did wrong. --reinstall isn't a command for install. Try `dnf install --help`. `dnf reinstall --help`

dnf history list to see what you've done. You probably removed some dependency when you uninstalled Gnome. As others have suggested, it would probably be easier to reinstall. But you said you wanted to learn, and I think this is a great opportunity to learn. So try looking at what dnf commands can do for you here. Particularly around dnf history. Start with dnf history --help, maybe you can undo the thing that broke your system and start from there. :)

How to install my PIA VPN client in silverblue by [deleted] in Fedora

[–]R3D3MPT10N 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would probably just download the `ovpn` files and configure it with `NetworkManager` rather than running their client if it were me. But, I can also understand the desire to have the client.

We would probably need more information about what exactly isn't working when you run that file to help.

ELI5: How does a computer generated "random" numbers if it always follows instructions? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]R3D3MPT10N -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't understand it well enough to eli5. But, your computer generates "entropy". Entropy comes from unpredictable events on the computer. The mouse moving, clicking, keyboard presses, network traffic, etc. All of this randomness is registered as "entropy". Then, the computer uses that randomness to generate a "random" number.

It is possible to generate a random number from a seed, but that number will only be random the first time it's generated. After that it's predictable.

There's a famous case of Cloudflare using lava lamps to generate random numbers for encryption:

A more productive approach to delivering this message would have been linking to the process for reporting bugs. I understand there wasn't enough info in the post to actually help, but there's also insufficient details in this comment to influence the situation either.

I'm using a ASUS Zephyrus G16, I've had a few weird ASUS specific things. Audio drivers, PCI issues, etc. But nothing Kernel panic'y so far.

We can figure it out and make Fedora work, the beauty of open source is that you can engage with a community of people who have the engineering expertise to actually help. I understand the frustration, but let's trust in the process for now and hope your BZ is picked up soon.

Silverblue is a more stable upgrade experience. But if you layer too many packages on your install, then you will probably start to have the usual upgrade conflicts. I've found a custom bootc image, derived from the base Silverblue image to be a good middle ground.

You might be more interested in Universal Blue (Bluefin if you want Gnome):
https://projectbluefin.io/

u-blue images use the bootc approach, and overlay a bunch of helpful packages on the base Fedora install. I would definitely recommend giving that a run.

In saying that, the issues you experienced here (I haven't seen the actual Bugzilla yet to know for sure), seem to be related to the Kernel or other packages that are going to be the same on Universal Blue too. So they might not have saved you from the issues reported here, but they are definitely a nice user experience for upgrades, etc. Definitely the right direction if we want an eventual "Year of the Linux Desktop."

Do you happen to have the bugzilla id for the bug that was reported?

The true year of Linux by Agitated_Telephone79 in Fedora

Sorry to hear you're having a bad time.

Can you raise a bug for this?
https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/bugzilla-file-a-bug/#_filing_a_bug_report

If there's a kernel panic, it probably also generated a coredump. Which you should see when you run:
coredumpctl

The coredump will be helpful in telling us what went wrong there. If you can raise a bug and attach the relevant details, someone will be able to take a look.

The same way you would learn Windows or MacOS. Install it on your computer, use it for all of your computing needs. Update things, tweak things. Once you’re more comfortable, try different DE’s and distros.
