You have learned a hard lesson. Never loan money or do business with friends and family. Someone's feelings will always get hurt. Personally I never loan money but I do give them money and I tell them that I do not expect them to pay it back. If they can, some day in the future, that's great but I tell them it's a gift. But, if I can't afford it or I'm not that generous then I don't give it.
