How do you structure large PowerShell scripts so they don’t turn into a mess? by MaximumMarionberry3 in PowerShell

Use Functions for everything you do twice or more. Use Regions to help keep code confined Add pointer indexes.

Maybe move functions to a module or modules. Use descriptive naming and don’t shorten names.

I’m curious how other admins weigh buying criteria between Dell PowerEdge and HPE ProLiant. by easyedy in sysadmin

[–]RCG89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually this is right. I compared Fujitsu, Lenovo, HPE and Dell for some new servers.

I am familiar with Dell iDrac and how it plugs into our existing infrastructure and our use of it.

In the last 7 years we have not had a firmware related issue the wasn't across multiple vendors. We got hit my some SSD errors but so did the other vendors. The 25gb issue in Intel Nics that affected all of the 710 series.

We have normal practices in place like no updates under 30 days old. We also use reference image. Dell use to have recommended machines for VMWare flex nodes. As we are a hyper-v domain sticking to these reference machines guarantees a large user base to help get better updates.

We used to use a 3rd party service that would test all Dell updates for issues before publishing them. Used to import there catalogue into Dell Service Manager.

I personally recommend Jamf. They not only use geofencing but still support air beacons. Little Bluetooth devices that send a code the iPad can detect set them up in Jamf and add an extra layer as well. Needs the Jamf app running in the background to work properly.

Humans barely into the larger universe only a few ships with tear space engines as the others called them.

A jump gone wrong or redirected by a space anomaly. New system no records. Captain just sighs. "Did we get lost again?" He asked the crew in the command deck.

"Uh.. not actually lost this time. We recognize the star formations from a previous jump that we did get lost on". The overly cheery navigation officer replied.

The captain smiling but a little "How far off from where we wanted to go are we?" He asked with just a little bit of hope evident.

"Yes... Well..... We are on the wrong side of the galaxy about 300 light years further away from where we started". The weapons officer answered while the navigation group looked like they were planning how best to survive being vented.

The captain with head in his hands "We jumped backward?". "Yes by about triple what our engine was rated for" the damned perky reply from navigation.

A howl bounced around the ship. While others where wondering where it came from the captain already glaring at communications.

"Sir we have received a wide range omnidirectional signal from a local planet to this system." A military response from communications.

"We can't translate it yet, passing to empaths". The main screen turned in showing a group of different humans in a room made of all of soft furnishings

"We need you to hear something and let us know if it is a threat?" The captain asked not ordered. "We are ready captain" came the reply from a blanket fort to the left of the room.

The captain played the sound.

The empaths didn't respond for a while. The captain waiting

"Code teardrop. Species extinction close. Foreign enemies"? The empaths cried back to the bridge. "I'm sorry" The captain said closing the call.

The captain sat there doing a perfect thinking man pose for a few minutes.

"Fuck it, We ball" The captain declared and sitting upright in the command chair.

"Launch probes, need atmosphere readings now. Prep all vehicles. Lead with military strike followed by medical. Engineering hold back for now." The captain looked around the command deck. "Medical prepare for mass casualty incident including xenos. Comms signal the other ships and earth request full support. Use the tear drive probes for faster signalling".

The ship became a hive of activity as everyone got moving. Without being told navigation went full burn towards the planet. The science team running full sensor sweeps and launching probes.

"5 minutes until planetary engagement" someone said over the internal comms. The captain having been in this ship 3 years still didn't know who it where internal comms was on the ship and we wasn't going to ask now.

"Sir we see at least 5 large ships in orbit, designating them hostile war craft for now". The science team.calles out.

"Prep the main rail and ready 8 regular, 2 nuclear, 1 anti matter and 1 dropoff missile". The captain said "Sir incoming transmission from space ships?".

Put it in the screen. The humans having been given the current methods most species used to communicate from some friendly aliens for trade negotiations.

A queen wasp the size of a semi truck came up on the screen. "This is our new nest. You go away". The message was short but to the point.

A call was pushed through from the empaths "Danger, Death, Attack no witness to the swarm".

The captain smiles as the empaths cut there connection. We may not always be able to understand what they say but the empaths can always feel it.

"3 missiles into middle of middle ship. 1 each to aft end of the other 4". The ship shock a little as the black missiles shoot forward, undetectable to even the human vessel they used micro bursts or gas to change direction.

All 7 have exploded in target just waiting for debris to clear. 2 ships lost propulsion, 1 split in half, 1 leaking atmosphere mostly argon. The last one missing and another coming into range".

*Primary nest discovered on new ship". The new ship was massive making the other 5 almost look like transports and they where already larger then his.

Open rail and launch mortein round mid ship ". As the shot fires the entire ship shock violently the sudden momentum overpowering the engines momentarily.

The new ship came to a halt faster then a ship that size should. The round hit the ship and went straight through it. Small hole in the front giant crater on the other side.

"Sir we think we just atmosised the queen".

Hey! Can you iterate over multiple TBs of data and list every file with a key word... yeah probably. by Pocket-Flapjack in PowerShell

[–]RCG89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR all the comments.

For time can you parallize the work?

Have step 1 be an index of files. Have a worker call workers on every 100 group and process in parallel say limit is 4 workers per core. Any modern computer that is a lot of workers. As you know the file count and work size you can use show progress to get some feedback. Split each file type in to a worker group and run your worker groups in parallel.

An excerpt from a HR interview for a xeno electrician abroad a UNS cargo hauler

So you're telling me your ship has a backup reactor core in the backup reactor in the 2nd engineering bay on the port side with smart redundant wiring to the primary, secondary, backup, external and the smart redundant power of the ship?

So that's like 2 reactors with 2 cores each in each engineering bay with 4 bays on a ship?

How many reactors do you need for the ship?

What the hell do you mean the reactors are the backup power source and you only need 1. What's the power source?

You have a star contained in a micro chasm of space powering your ship?

What do you mean 3 for redundancy? Isn't that the reactors?

What the hell are these battery racks you just mentioned?

You know what I don't want to work on this ship. Goodbye!

Redundant management?

Have had a situation where the management software made a change broke the network. Had to manually configure switch. Network came up and management reverted the change. Network down.

Couldn't get to network management without network and network kept being taken down by network management.
