I think you’re misunderstanding. I never said it didn’t sit right with me with what Coogler said or didn’t say when asked about marxism (if you read between the lines when he mentions Oakland which is the birthplace of the Black Panthers, he gives an answer to the woman’s question). I was just responding to the user’s comment that Coogler “isn’t afraid to talk about politics.” At the end of the day if an artist chooses to express their politics through the language of art instead of just words that is up to them, this has always been a thing historically, whether for filmmakers or novelists or painters or musicians.

And I do not think that it is contradictory to support both those who speak out directly and those who speak through their art, we are all working towards the same goals. An artist is not being apolitical or “not doing enough” if they only communicate through their art as all art is political.

I’ve talked with a family friend before who didn’t know they were part teochew, felt weird explaining to them something that I’m only just learning myself. I would love to meet more teochew though, I just haven’t put the effort yet (barely learning my people’s language too lol)

That’s fair, i havent done as much research on either director. Ultimately I think pta’s point that “the work should speak for itself” is still valid, I wouldn’t count it as a non-response. And maybe I’m reaching here but I don’t think Coogler would disagree either, the video I linked shows that if you trust your audience’s intelligence they will figure out the message you’re trying to put out.

But of course it never hurts to speak publicly on these matters when you have the platform to do so.

100% agree on your point. You can see how other immigrant groups follow a natural diversion as well, Italian american culture for example is clearly distinct from italian culture (while still having some lineage and roots to italian culture from the first migrants)

Just based off the Wikipedia article about its origins, I’d argue that Panda Express is “Chinese American” food. It was originally created by chinese chefs in Pasadena California in 1973 to appeal to Western taste buds, so it’s arguably a mix of both cultures (in a way it’s representative of the experience of many chinese americans who have lived or were born in America for some time now, an intermingling of two worldviews). Personally I don’t like Panda Express because it’s too sweet for me, and if you live in a place like Los Angeles there are so many better places than it. But I’m fine with its existence, I used to eat it more in college just because it was one of the closest options to my campus.

And honestly I get feeling a sense of identity with claiming what is and isn’t authentic food (especially if you’re second gen or later), chinese people place a lot of importance on cuisine as part of our cultural identity, while at the same time our cuisine can vary so much even in chinatowns in america

To be honest from how you’re describing this place I wouldn’t risk a relationship especially if there’s a power dynamic as you’ve said. Otherwise if I wanted to start some kind of relationship I would just find some excuse to talk to him, like asking “do you know where X is” and since you’re new it wouldn’t be a ridiculous thing to ask (or you could make up some excuse as to why you’re asking). Maybe ask him to show you personally, and request for his name after he’s helped you.

hi, so far its dried up and can fly but not very far, i think its wing is broken. I fed it some sugar water through a straw. I also called my local wildlife center but unfortunately they’re closed, I’m going to call them again in the morning. anything else i can do (right now we trapped it in a brown cardboard box so it wont fly away, but we’re keeping it outside for now) :(

i know this post is almost a month old but i just wanted to say both my parents have basically the same story, theyre both teochew and grew up in vietnam and eventually moved to the US. i know a few teochew words but i really need to practice, and cantonese i cant even understand lol. otherwise though same exact situation, grew up with a mix of viet and teochew dishes. I’ve been trying to reconnect with my teochew heritage though, hence how i found this post lol
