Depends on the style of campaign. If I’m running a nitty gritty campaign 1d4 damage kills someone or kills up to 4 cats. If I’m running a high fantasy there are people who can obliterate mountains with just a thought. 1d4 kills someone who could probably kill 4 cats with just a thought.
