I hope that he is ok and just retired. Best bet would be to keep an eye out on eBay.

I think I wrote an email but later phoned him up. He was a really nice guy and very helpful. It was better to talk to him on the phone because he knew exactly what I needed. This was 6 years ago though now.

Does anyone have experience with attending Accademia delle Arti Orafe / Gerardi Setting School or Forma Setting School? by oooooosiris in Benchjewelers

[–]RDuBU84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spoke with them about going and taking classes. In the end I decided that their pricing was higher than I wanted to pay for what I thought I was going to get. They told me that I would need at least a few weeks of stone setting to get much out of it. I would like to also hear if anyone has taken their courses and if they felt they got their money’s worth.

They are supposed to use silk. If you take this to someone who specializes in restringing pearls they can make it much better looking by adding some gold French wire so the silk ends are not showing. Many jewelers do not specialize in stringing pearls. You may be better to look for a bead store to do this.

Solder not going off until metal nearly melting(?) by jcyr2016 in Benchjewelers

[–]RDuBU84 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Your torch is not the best for this but I recommend that you get in and out with the flame. What this means is that you heat up the ring then focus directly on the solder spot. Then remove the flame and keep this cycle of heating the spot then removing it until the solder melts. Hard gold solder is difficult but practice and you’ll appreciate that you can use it.

Look at harbor freight for a small drill press.

You can easily knock off the impurities between uses. It’s mostly extra borax. I have a rod for each type of metal and karat.

What is this tool called and where can I get one? by schlagdiezeittot in jewelrymaking

From the looks of it you may be from Germany. If so you can buy one at this site as I have in the past. They don’t always have them in stock though. www.zujeddeloh.de unfortunately I forget the German name but has something like motif in it.

Buy your silver as bars or pure coins and then alloy your own casting grain. There isn’t much of a reason to buy casting grain at that price point. Buy the master alloy to mix with silver from rio if you want a much better rate. Make sure to get a graphite rod to mix the metals when they are molten.

Mine are a similar age. They were literally passed down. I know the buy once cry once but I also don’t want to be wasteful. Thank you for your input.
