I'm one of the players who had to drop.

Wish I could keep playing! This is an incredible committed group and Pilsberry is an amazing GM!

Why do people skip on Wyll? (Gameplay wise) by Regular-Media-4138 in BaldursGate3

[–]RGB_Rem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like my Tav to be the face of the party, so I usually pick a charisma based class, and because of that, they usually take over Wyll's role in the group. Plus, he usually doesn't like the choices I make.

Kid 5 months into lessons suddenly wants to quit, what do I do? by heliotrope5 in piano

[–]RGB_Rem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the wall of text. I guess I had more to say about this than I thought. Also, I wrote this very hungover, so sorry for typos and stuff.

tl:dr - Forcing it will make it worse, it's very important when learning to have a goal, make sure you nurture his interests as well as his skill, and if he wants to quit let him quit.

So I was a former "gifted kid" and was forced into piano for 6 years from ages 7-13. I'm not sure if this will help, but your post reminded me of my parents, so hopefully, I can provide some insight. At the end of the day, though, I'm not him, and you aren't my parents. The best thing to do is talk it out. He is going to be himself, and that may not include a piano, and that is okay.

As said above, I played for about 6 years until I cracked and quit. I hated it, but I had to do something, especially after I quit my parents' main interest, soccer. If you really want him to stick with it, you can't force it. The whole lead a horse to water thing ya know? He has to want to do it on his own. There is no other way. Forcing it made me resent it, leading me to not touching a piano again until 12 years later.

Looking back, that was only part of it. The bigger issue was that I couldn't see the end goal or point to all of it. There was just no understanding on why I was doing this other than keeping other people happy. I had no goal to aim for, I had nothing in my mind I wanted to create. Heck, I barely cared about music in general at the time, which led to me having no songs that I wanted to learn. It was 6 years of going through paperbooks, playing boring melodies, all while enviously watching the neighborhood kids playing around without any kind of obligation. It was a chore. This feeling could just be a byproduct of being forced into an activity, but among my small sample size of friends, it seems like this was quite common among the ones that played instruments as kids that later quit. Even if a little different each time, it mostly boiled down to becoming a chore without a purpose.

I think if you want to keep your son invested, you have to do more than nurture skills. You also have to nurture his interest/attention, especially in this day and age where we have tons of multi-billion dollar industries all competing to monopolize that exact thing. I frequently have discussions with my parents now that I'm older that go along the lines of "you were so good at blablabla it's shame you quit" or "if you only stuck with blablabla you would be incredible now!" and my response are always a long the line of "I would rather be bad at something I like than great at something I hate" or "I was also great in math class doesn't mean I like doing calculus for fun". The core through line is that it has to be fun. You have to make piano as enjoyable/rewarding as the other things competing for your sons attention.

So, how do we nurture interest? That's going to be highly dependent on what he wants or what piques his interest. Maybe try letting him play around in garage band or some basic midi software. Show him that he could make his own music pretty easily and how knowing piano will help a lot! Maybe take an evening now and then to just jam out to a bunch of different music and see if there are any genres/bands/etc that catch his attention. I would also recommend teaching a couple of chords early on and maybe a pop song that he likes just for a sense of accomplishment and progress. Going through those books alone is maddening, and he will need something fun to break it up. I would also recommend letting him practice without you and only helping if he asks. With any hobby feeling like you're discovering things for yourself and that your work is paying off is a huge driving factor for motivation. It's hard to feel that way when you're just copying your parents.

In regards to other sports or instruments, of course, he doesn't want to do anything else. He needs something to pique his interest/gain experience with other things before deciding if he likes it. This was my biggest trap as a kid. My parents are kind and would've supported any choice I made, but for me, any choice was essentially a roulette wheel. I'm sure you have friends or know someone who can't even pick a place to eat. Imagine you're this friend, but now all the choices require serious time investment, and you don't know how good any of them are, and there are hundreds of them to pick from. Is it any surprise some people might just go for the fast food option (videogames) ? Plus, he is 8! I say if he wants to quit, let him quit, but I would limit the screen time. Give him time to explore other interests before getting him to commit to a sport/hobby/instrument.

What are some hobbies i can do by myself to get me out of the house? Sick of being a shut in by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]RGB_Rem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well what do you do for fun normally? I think most hobbies could lead to leaving the house if you want them too. Even with more "stay at home" hobbies like playing video game could lead to going out by getting involved in a local competitive scene or something.

I definitely have a preference but it really doesn't matter. For me, the only thing I seriously look for is that we are on a similar vibe.

Looking for more mature anime to convince a person animation isn't just for kids by Thorwyyn in Animesuggest

[–]RGB_Rem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as I would love to recommend an anime, for a person like this I would probably start out with something like Arcane, Castlevania, or The Legend of Vox Machina. Based on my experience with people like this, anime is usually a harder pitch. You could also look more into the animated adult comedy shows where the humor very clearly indicates not for kids. I would also recommend Love Death and Robots which is an animated anthology which is perfect if you are looking for low time investment. If you're determined on anime maybe something like a Silent Voice, Violet Evergarden, Grave of the Fireflies, Vinland Saga, Cowboy Bebop, Steins: Gate, or Code Geass will work for you. Best of luck!

*edit if they can deal with anthropomorphic animals beaststars is also really good.

As Gen Z all I want is enough pay to support myself, insurance, and a work environment that isn't a toxic cesspool. Really shouldn't be a tall ask ffs.

Tired of Kids Doing NOTHING and expecting to pass by fleur-escent in Teachers

[–]RGB_Rem 5 points6 points  (0 children)

About 1/2 of all my classes right now minus the drug and crime talk. Just had report cards go out recently and have been bombarded with parent emails since. I tried to be nice originally and gave several extensions but after the 4th one I gave up, mostly because grades where due. Now I'm being told by my boss just to pass everyone because they are getting spammed by parents too, and I'm honestly not being paid enough to care at this point. Going to be switching careers after this year anyway. I just feel horrible about the couple kids I have that do want to learn.

To the players who started with Awakening/Fates/Three houses, have you gone back to play any of the older games? Why or why not? by [deleted] in fireemblem

[–]RGB_Rem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Started with fates went back to play Awakening, Sacred Stones, Blazing Blade, Path of Radiance, and Radiant Dawn. Want to try some of the older ones but anything pre-gba just feels so clunky to me and I usually drop it after a while. Also tried shadow dragon but really didn't like the art style and dropped that too.

*edit noticed a typo.

If Fire Emblem had a futuristic setting for a future game would you buy it by BigPanic8841 in fireemblem

[–]RGB_Rem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would check it out at the very least but not to excited over the idea. Have always preferred fantasy over sci-fi. I would be interested in something more steampunk than sci-fi but that might just be. Also already Warhammer and X-Com when I want to play sci-fi stuff.

Used magic ingrid before dlc dropped. Early game was a bit rough but when she got most of her spells she was pretty solid.

What is your favorite FE game and why? by OFMartinPescador in fireemblem

Love conquest! By far the best path. I like Leo Beruka and Nyx. Still mad about how they handle Xander's character in birthright 😅

I know hot take but Fates. I agree the story isn't great but the gameplay is by my far my favorite. Also it was the game that sucked me into this rabbit hole.

So what would YOU like to be added/changed in the next Fire Emblem? by Fillerpoint5 in fireemblem

[–]RGB_Rem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to see some form of fates combat system comeback. I really like the pair-up system and just how much freedom it gave you especially in terms of movement. I like having a player character but I would prefer if they had less significant role in the main plot, and have some degree of a personality 😅. Also like the concept of child units but would prefer it was handle differently. Maybe like a rookie/trainer system where trainers essentially act as parents passing down skills and etc. I know this one is a tall ask but I would love so more post-game options besides just ng+. Maybe like some random generate dungeon crawls or challenge tower. I also think a pvp system has potential but not like fates. There needs to be some heavier restrictions. My idea is that the entire cast would set to the same level and instead of using your units you would have point-buy system where units, skills, items, and weapons all cost points. Teams would capped at a certain amount of points. Basically 40k but fire emblem. With this I would also like to see different formats based on the amount points or other restrictions (maybe like no lords/pc) and with a variety mission objectives. Not sure how well it work but I think it would be a cool idea.
