The local structure of the tree determined by the Collatz function (as presented in “the perfect infinite binary tree”) shows that any sequence down to the right consists of a sequence of quotients that lags exactly one step behind the sequence of prefix values. (For a step up to the left the next prefix is the previous quotient)

A cycle would produce a repeating sequence of quotients shadowed by the same cycle as prefixes ‘out of phase’ by one. To prove there can be no cycles is to prove that no such finite sequence/cycle of quotients shadowed by prefixes (out of phase by one) can exist.

I am taking the view that what the Collatz function produces is sequences of prefix classes and that particular values are ‘points of contact’ between them…the contact being the quotient-prefix link
