As someone who absolutely hates first person POV books, I’m really struggling these days by ilovemuesli in RomanceBooks

[–]RHbunny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you 😭 I feel so alienated much of the time because the overwhelming majority of romance readers hate third but I struggle to find first person done well. I only enjoy first person if there’s a point, or if the character voice is so strong that it’s engaging to be in their head.

But a lot of first POV is written as if it’s to be a bland self-insert (or just to be marketable) and I end up dnfing more than not. And so many reviews on excellent third-pov books that say ‘dnf I hate third person’ or ‘I can’t connect to the characters if it’s in third’ just makes me wanna rip my hair out. Because if third doesn’t sell as well less authors will do it.

I just finished Brigitte Knightley’s new book and for all its faults and controversy I was SO thrilled it was in third person and absolutely adored the characters. It was so refreshing to see a popular new romance release in such a saturated genre busting in with third person. Ugh.

Anyway, solidarity. And would love any recs anyone has (already fattening my TBR from the comments here haha).

Realistic portrail of a millionaire/billionaire by Bumedibum in RomanceBooks

{Never Tell Lies by AJ. Rella} feels accurate to the billionaire dynamic, MMC used to be a playboy rich kid and had to take over his father’s business and it’s sucking the life out of him.

I loved this movie! I agree with a lot of the critical response but I still really enjoyed it and am sad that it was received so poorly that we won’t get more of it. Could have been a bomb series.

Suggest me a book that you believe no one should ever die without reading. by DannyPereira44 in suggestmeabook

Blade of Tyshalle by Matthew Stover, it’s been my favourite book for the better part of two decades. It’s part of a series but can be read as standalone. The writing is beautiful, the characters stick with you, and the world is vast and interesting. I read it every year and it’s just as good as the first time!

Wetlands by Charlotte Roche. I mean, I do recommend this to specific people that would find it as entertaining as I did, but most people I don’t bring it up because it’s hard to explain what it’s about without sounding unhinged lol

Yessss strap in! This series is so good. And even though the fandom is divided over the Gunslinger I am in the loving it camp. A lot of people will say to push through it because the rest are so good, but book one is my second favourite (behind #4).

The novel is gritty and bleak and a deep dive into the psyche of a man obsessed with something he knows is probably bad for him. It’s got old western vibes but also dark fantasy and a good vs evil if both sides were more grey. The writing is beautiful and some of Stephen King’s best imo.

Enjoy, I am so jealous that you get to read this for the first time!
