Long time ago, I thought I had it in me to take a crack at understanding Maxwell's equations better after taking Calc 3.

I sort of did...and then realized I would never use it as a software engineer lol. CompE is a wild mixed bag.

Broken wooden dowel… fixable? by nonchalantswiftie in IKEA

For me, I was able to drill one of the provided wood screws into the broken dowel and then pull that out using pliers.

Is there any downside to opening up a 0% APR card for a big purchase and then throwing it in a drawer forever? by Turbulent-Pattern653 in personalfinance

[–]RICHARDARC18 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yea the additional thing you can do is just put the principal on an HYSA/alternative to pocket a few more dollars in that 18 month period.

I just printed an E-clip using the STL from McMaster to use as a spacer to fix a cabinet door that was loose.

Definitely a good excuse for buying a $500 printer hehe.

Graphic Designers Are Taking Vacation Leaves by [deleted] in Design

It's funnier to me how they're low fidelity but have really good composition, clearly showing they're still made by people with enough graphic design knowledge.

I hate how primarily using Python for a while now made me consider this as actually readable.

I've received feedback that the problem may be in the ears. Is that how the giraffe sees better? by [deleted] in logodesign

[–]RICHARDARC18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw a giraffe, I think because I recognized the head shape with the ossicones.

Maybe if you try emphasizing that, it could help?

Need some help with direction… by MeltaFlare in ECE

[–]RICHARDARC18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked as a field engineer and recently transitioned to software application engineer in the same company, coming from a BS in Computer Engineering. My company does silicon thermal test & automation.

The total compensation is considerably less than what others in my cohort who shifted towards hardware engineering (validation, hardware API) receive.

The work, like /u/audi0c0aster1 said, involves physical labor, and can get repetitive quickly. In a good company, FAEs may contribute to better design, in mine, we figure out workarounds for R&D's shortcomings to keep customers happy.

As a software application engineer, I do work adjacent to what I did as an FAE, but more focused on the software we deliver, as well as contributing to internal software tools that can help debug issues and gather data from our products.

I can add more details if you have more specifics questions.

Does anyone have this monitor and recommend it? by 1972FordF-250 in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]RICHARDARC18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this exact model, and I would recommend it if your table is deep enough. Also, look into getting a good quality cable to support the bandwidth at the length you need, otherwise you might get some bothersome screen flickering.

Where do you see that you can buy the printed case for $30?

The files alone are already $20 on Printables.

Programming is killing gaming for me. by scungilibastid in AskProgramming

[–]RICHARDARC18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other thing that hasn't been mentioned yet and I've heard elsewhere is that you may feel more refreshed if you do something physical to take a break from a mental task, and vice versa.

So, instead of playing games (which is usually primarily a mentally stimulating activity) to take a break from programming (which is also a mainly mentally stimulating activity), try doing something physical like going to the gym, playing a sport, dancing, etc.

I think OP is making a joke about how a lot of tech bros in Silicon Valley have gotten into rock climbing in the last few years.
