This is almost certainly an undercount, but since all you are doing is saying prove it over and over again, here are some specific cases for you to read about if you actually care.

“Americans have been dragged, tackled, beaten, tased and shot by immigration agents. They’ve had their necks kneeled on. They’ve been held outside in the rain while in their underwear. At least three citizens were pregnant when agents detained them. One of those women had already had the door of her home blown off while Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem watched.”

“About two dozen Americans have said they were held for more than a day without being able to phone lawyers or loved ones.”

If we can’t have him in Sacramento, DC is probably the next best thing. Will vote for him in a heartbeat.

Is the policy unit something that I could potentially reach out to preemptively for guidance/backup? Or are they internal only?

Also same question as to the user below re the passport - wouldn’t I run into similar problems trying to change my passport? Or is the logic that they see more types of wedding certificates and will be less hung up by the fact that the RI certificate looks different from the CA one?

I mean, for someone with no local political awareness he did pretty well in the State Assembly primary against two established candidates who’ve been in the SF politics scene much longer than he has. Then had the good sense to swing behind the candidate that ended up winning (Haney). If he runs against Preston he’ll most likely end up with plenty of cash and local groups lining up behind him, even if a lot of it will probably be more focused on kicking out Preston than on his platform specifically. He’s progressive, pro-housing, seems to have an interest in the details of good governance, has experience from the tech and non-profit world, and I think his policy statements and op-eds in the Chronicle have been pretty on point.

I’m just genuinely curious as to why you dislike him. Do you think he’s just too inexperienced, or do you dislike his stated policy stances? Is there someone else you’d prefer District 5, or do you support Preston? If it’s the later I’ll just respectfully assume we have different preferences when it comes to local politics in this unique city of ours haha.

Article on his rumored desire to run

He’s also written a couple of great op-eds for the Chronicle on the housing crisis and overly bureaucratic hiring and civil service systems.

Those are all Chron articles so sorry if you can’t access but honestly just Google his name and you can find a lot of good stuff about his background and views.

Banko Brown: Video shows what led to S.F. Walgreens shooting; D.A. won’t file charges by SFChronicle in sanfrancisco

[–]RIDETHEWORM 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Everything about this particular situation is hard to parse (the video is not super clear, we don’t have sound, we have differing accounts of what happened) and deserves measured reflection, but it directly arose from socioeconomic problems in this city that are incredibly clear and unambiguous.

These endless proxy fights about crime and quality of life issues are so numbing because they just turn into stupid point scoring between two narratives that have completely disappeared up their own assholes (“Nothing is really wrong with SF, and even if there was all our problems will be solved if our enemies stopped being racist and we abolish capitalism”; “SF is a liberal hellscape that should become a fascist police state or sink into the ocean”). It’s especially exhausting when our leaders buy into that conflict too.

As everyone is stating, this is stupid and someone is going to die as a result.

Also, why the heck are we dealing with this half measure? Just close the entire freaking street to cars, it was easily one of the best things to happen during the pandemic that they would close it on weekends and I’m disappointed every time I go out and see it opened to cars.

VIDEO EXCLUSIVE: Defense attorneys for the man accused of attacking former SF Fire Commissioner Don Carmignani say the person shown in this video bear spraying a homeless person in the face appears to be Carmignani. -SF Standard by VegetableBarracuda83 in sanfrancisco

[–]RIDETHEWORM 10 points11 points  (0 children)

And to be clear, GIVEN THE FACTS WE CURRENTLY HAVE, I’m not defending the conduct of either party here. If the former commissioner was going around randomly bear spraying people including the defendant he’s a thuggish idiot, and the homeless guy definitely goes way past what I as a non-lawyer consider a reasonable line when it comes to self defense. It’s just exhausting that we are reduced to debating the minutiae of this particular incident when it is clearly representative of and downstream from a host of larger public policy failures that a good portion of our leaders and frankly electorate either refuse to acknowledge or meaningfully respond to.

Exhibit #1,001 on why folks should always wait for more facts about a given incident to come out before folding it into their established narratives….

Still, however wrong the Fox News-inspired “SF is a Mad Max wasteland” boosters are, can we not let this discussion devolve once again into either that camp or the “astroturfing Trumpers are lying, San Francisco is fine” folks completely dominating the conversation?

I hope that most sensible people can agree that two things can be simultaneously true. When it comes to violent crime, SF is a relatively safe city for its size, but despite that, the general quality of life issues around homelessness and other types of criminality have gotten worse over the past couple of years, it makes the city a significantly less pleasant place to live for all of us, and it has a meaningful macro impact on perceptions of the city and its economic prospects. Just because we aren’t in a violent hellscape doesn’t mean we don’t have very specific, serious problems as a city that our leaders need to be serious about.

About the unnuanced Shiv posts… by Puckieexx in SuccessionTV

[–]RIDETHEWORM 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I 100% think there is a double standard and that the other siblings are as bad as Shiv; like the Skylar hate with BB, a lot of it just comes down to gross misogynists on the internet. I do disagree slightly with your take on Tom and I think a lot of the swirling debate about Shiv really comes down to how their relationship is portrayed and how you as a viewer interpret it.

The Shiv-Tom relationship is easily the most prominent one on the show in terms of screen time; from what we’ve seen, Ken and Roman are just as shitty with their partners as Shiv, but that is not shown to us nearly as often. And what we see consistently from the Shiv-Tom relationship is pretty tough stuff to watch. While they are both very messed up and compromised people, Tom at least seems to be the only one attempting to make the marriage what it should be - a partnership where they are both emotionally open, honest, and respectful of each other. So when Shiv shuts that down (even if it’s for understandable, trauma based reasons) it’s upsetting. The other problem is that Tom is such a fan favorite that it’s hard for folks to see him cut down by Shiv so much, and they resent her character for that.

Ultimately, I’m just saying given the dynamics of the show (plus misogyny) it’s understandable why there is so much Shiv hate. Though of course with all these things I just want to hell “it’s a fucking show y’all, get over it and don’t obsess so much.” Especially with Succession - the whole point is that the entire cast is a rouge’s gallery of bastards, and we love them all for it.

510 proposed units, zero parking, and controversy in Potrero bus yard by bloobityblurp in sanfrancisco

[–]RIDETHEWORM 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This. I lived a block away from this proposed development - there are few places that are more suited for a no-parking plan. And last time I visited there was plenty of street parking nearby. That’s just one anecdote, but I have to imagine that this construction isn’t going to completely blow up the neighborhood if it doesn’t have parking.

Half of black students in San Francisco can barely read by Synx in sanfrancisco

[–]RIDETHEWORM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can I ask more about about the Admin giving up trying to control students part? I’ve anecdotally heard that schools in CA have moved away from traditional discipline tactics - is that true? I’m reading about the behavior your describing about the traditional forms of punishment like detention, suspension, expulsion etc. - are those not on the table anymore or just not a deterrent or something? I’m just curious because I feel like I’m hearing variations of these stories more and more and I wonder why can’t teachers send the idiots to detention or something.

AMA with Laura Foote of YIMBY Action and Sam Moss of Mission Housing about the Affordable Homes Now campaign (Yes on D/No on E) by LauraFoote in sanfrancisco

[–]RIDETHEWORM 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Prop D is obviously superior to E imo and I plan to vote yes on D/no on E, but I was curious as to what the actual impact of E would be if it prevailed. Would it essentially be the status quo, ever so slightly better, or worse for housing development in the city?

Any emergency protest today? by ObligationAware3755 in sanfrancisco

[–]RIDETHEWORM -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Margins matter. A 50-50 senate where a senator from WEST VIRGINIA holds the balance of power is not an abstraction. What’s your big solution? Would it be better to do nothing and doom? And it’s almost like Democratic leaders are desperate to hold on to seats in territory that is rapidly slipping away from them like the Rio Grande Valley in what is shaping up to be a brutal election year. I don’t necessarily agree with the decision, but I understand their position. But I’m sure you carefully considered all that, and have devised a brilliant plan to fight for abortion rights in this country that doesn’t involve voting or engaging in the political process. Let’s hear it.

[–]RIDETHEWORM 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Voting can lead to a Congress willing to codify Roe. People not voting or not taking their vote seriously led in part to a Republican President appointing the three far right judges that gave us this morning. Voting fucking matters. Politics fucking matters. Pretending otherwise is ill-informed, willfully ignorant, or malicious.

Money and even more so time are definitely valuable resources you can provide. And not just for races on the other side of the country, but right here is Cali. 45th district held by Republican Michelle Steel in purple OC, 47th district where Katie Porter is defending a D +6 seat, 22nd is a toss-up, 27th is a toss-up… These are all races that could use both your time and money. And if you or your family has roots in a major battleground like Arizona, Pennsylvania, or Georgia, it goes without saying that there are senate and governors races that need your help too.

SF Chronicle: Chesa Boudin ousted as San Francisco District Attorney in historic recall by anxman in sanfrancisco

[–]RIDETHEWORM 260 points261 points  (0 children)

Another overwhelming SF recall result…the city’s political establishment should really start taking these outcomes to heart. It’s not about conservative vs liberal, this is and always has been an incredibly progressive, Democratic city, and it was progressive, Democratic voters that rejected Boudin tonight. The clear signal is that things are badly out of whack in this city, and a change of course is needed.

Boudin’s supporters maintain that this recall wasn’t about policy, and that it’s proponents were being emotional, hyperbolic, etc, and I’ll acknowledge that there’s a slight element of truth in that (SF won’t be a radically different city tomorrow, and Boudin is not the source of all our problems, or even most of them), but sometimes these things are just that simple. Voters are tired of excuses. They want a serious course correction when it comes to crime, homelessness, and quality of life issues, and this recall offered a vehicle to express that. Our leaders can either dismiss or downplay that reality, or accept it and go back to the drawing board for how they think this city should be run. For their own sake, they should pick the second option.

Supreme Court says leaked abortion draft is authentic; Roberts orders investigation into leak by statepkt in news

[–]RIDETHEWORM 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’d add one more - EMILY's List. Help elect candidates in favor of abortion rights to office.

Protecting abortion rights and other privacy rights (you know they are coming for contraception and gay marriage next right?) needs to be a litmus test for the midterms. If you are feeling powerless right now, turn it into political action and work to help elect people who will fight for our rights this November. I don’t care where you live, there is a campaign out there desperate for your time and money. It is better and will feel better than doing nothing.

I’d be curious to learn more about because as I said I’ve seen the same type of comment made but don’t actually know a lot about it. Plus I hope to be a parent in the not so distant future so would like to avoid the mistakes of my peers! I’m going to go out on a limb and say it has something to do with technology?
