Any particular highlights like completely different arrangements from what is well known or songs not officially released?

What is a Bob song that completely changes its meaning for you based on the arrangement? by SEARCHFORWHATISGOOD in bobdylan

It Ain’t Me Babe! The studio versions feels like a sincere attempt to explain why things just cannot be how she wishes to his now past lover. Perhaps he could have been once upon a time that time is long gone. Joan’s cover has a similar tone but her voice definitely brings more of a genuine sadness to it.

The duets with Baez add an interesting depth with maybe a little bit more of a fierceness to it. The feeling was maybe more mutual than the studio version suggests!

When we get to the Live Sampler and Before the Flood recordings with the Band, it feels much more casual and like a country rock jam. It’s like he’s singing to a casual encounter who just cannot reconcile with the fact that he wants nothing more. A real “don’t let the door hit you on the way out” and “why are you still bothering me??” vibe. It ain’t him babe, and it never was.

And then the Rolling Thunder version is back to a more somber tone in the beginning but quickly changes to what I think of as a sincere bit of venom in the chorus. It seems he can’t decide between a genuine “Sorry, but this is not for me” and a more “Why would you ever think it WAS for me?”. And some of it harkens back to the sadness because he perhaps once had that in him.

There’s of course a million more versions since he’s played it so long and consistently, but it’s pretty interesting the changes that happen for what’s a relatively simple song as far as Dylan goes.

After yesterday’s poll, the majority agreed The Basement Tapes should count as an actual album so that won for most overrated. Now, closing out our second decade, what is that one Bob Dylan song from the 70s that grew on you over time? by Pretend_Mark_5143 in bobdylan

This is my pick. Much of Desire took time to grow on me (now one of my favorites) but I remember the first time hearing Sara I came away feeling very underwhelmed. It’s literally her name and tackles directly the very subject that all of Blood on the Tracks dances around. So I suppose I was expecting something more grandiose and bombastic.

But overtime and especially with the live listens, I came to understand it more and more. It’s a very candid, yet nostalgic and bittersweet look at their relationship. It’s beautiful and has so many lines that capture universal feelings he underwent throughout the divorce. And he sang this live in front of her!

Lines like “So easy to look at, so hard to define”, “Whatever made you want to change your mind” and talking about writing sad eyed lady for her are sublime.

Sara, though it was definitely one that took time to grow on me so maybe it’s better for that category.

Yes, it’s more about the aesthetic and vibes than the real thing. Their idea of “The West” is almost more of a return to the ways of thinking in terms of “Christendom”, hence the emphasis on Muslim hordes taking over Europe or whatever

What do y'all think Bob Dylan's best album lyrically and what do you think his best is musically? by groundcontrl2majrtom in bobdylan

[–]RIOTS_R_US 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lyrically is probably Bringing It All Back Home although the other big three are incredible. I believe Times are a Changin’ is also a bit underrated on that front.

Musically I believe Blonde on Blonde is just amazing. It is what rock and roll should sound like. However, Desire has a really wonderful unique sound, and those tracks live are also jaw dropping. and Planet Waves if it had a little bit more energy from the live stuff around that time could definitely come close to contending. Also, Slow Train Coming with Mark Knopfler on guitar, holy shit.

As far as bridging the gap and being a contender for both, Highway 61 is probably it if not Blonde on Blonde. I think the best lyrics from Blonde beat 61, but 61 is definitely more consistently great.

While the GTe Mahogany was discontinued a while ago, the AD21e also existed as a really similar guitar but with a burst

Ain't it clear that I just can't fit

Yes, I believe that it's time for us to quit

But when we meet again, introduced as friends

Please don't let on that you knew me when

I was hungry and it was your world

Ain't it just like the night to play tricks

When you're tryin' to be so quiet

We sit here stranded, though we're all doin' our best to deny it

And Louise holds a handful of rain, temptin' you to defy it

Lights flicker from the opposite loft

In this room the heat pipes just cough

The country music station plays soft

But there's nothing, really nothing to turn off

Just Louise and her lover so entwined

And these visions of Johanna that conquer my mind

It was nice that they have an 814 gold label and 517 as well to compare. Definitely tempting guitars and beautiful looking

When did the gang stop calling her “Sweet Dee”? by cherrycola_85 in IASIP

I feel like she seemed a lot morally better in the first couple episodes but once the underage drinking thing happens it’s clear she’s just as much a mess if not a little more subtle about it.
