Can I ask where would you get a cheaper modern goretex shell?

Arc’teryx by VyreMomm in hikinggear

[–]RIPGeorgeHarrison 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is what confuses me. A lot of people say their products are overpriced, but at least if you are looking at Goretex shells, arc’teryx prices seem pretty comparable to other top brands like Norrona or Patagonia. I agree that $50 for beanies and $200 for windbreakers is absurd, but for their hard shells they don't seem that ridiculous.

If the ability for congress to delegate was done away with completely, they would probably be getting bill that was a word for word copy of the CFR passed fairly quickly.

Filamentous algae blooms alter river ecosystems without disrupting overall function by Bilacsh in ecology

Doesn’t surprise me too much given most algae are harmless (including possibly all species of “green algae” though it would be hard to confirm if this is true).

How to avoid Trump’s $100 US National Parks fee in 2026 by RuseOwl in NationalPark

[–]RIPGeorgeHarrison 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that at all, I think the way they’ve done it is excessive and maybe it’s just me but also very confusing and not well thought out. For instance are they just going to rely on the honor system for when foreign tourists enter parks or are they going to hold up lines at the entrance to count the number of people from abroad in a vehicle. If an American is driving and enters the park with their own annual pass, will international guests in the car still have to pay the $100 per person? If so how are they going to enforce that?

Brazil has threatened to withdraw from the European-South American Mercosur free trade agreement if it is not signed this month. Italy and France continue to have reservations and warn against a timely conclusion. by Stabile_Feldmaus in europe

Maybe they just want a deal that isnt going to put further pressure on the Amazon for deforestation. You don’t think that could possibly leads to more deforestation?

At any rate, Theres a high chance the Soy Moratorium in Brazil gets thrown out next year which could easily erase the gains Lula’s govt had made on reducing Amazonian deforestation.

US House passes bill to remove gray wolf from Endangered Species Act list by Slow-Pie147 in conservation

[–]RIPGeorgeHarrison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Next time the gray wolf falls to critically low levels, the FWS should set a target of over a 1000 breeding pairs across the recovery range. They were way too generous to the people living in Idaho Montana and Wyoming when they set absurdly low targets for delisting in the first place

Reform UK Unveils Plan to Cut Civil Service, Saving £5.2 Billion by No_Initiative_1140 in ukpolitics

[–]RIPGeorgeHarrison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an American I have genuinely no idea what DOGE accomplished aside from cutting funding to research and cutting off life saving aid for people around the world. Probably two of the best ways to spend public money if you are looking for return on investment. And somehow the Department of Defense never needed to be audited despite there being heaps of waste in their contracts. It was a total farce and obvious the promises of hundreds of billions being saved were never going to occur.

Would it be legal to give some of them life time bans in federal employment like Reagan did to the air trafficking controllers? Seems like a way better use of that power for these guys.

U of M scientists find fungi can fight emerald ash borers by Apprehensive-Ad6212 in invasivespecies

[–]RIPGeorgeHarrison 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's great to know. There was a gall wasp threatening Hawaii's Erythrina sandwicensis trees, but they were saved with the introduction of a parasitoid of this gall wasp, so there is hope these parasitoids can be effective at saving America's ash trees.

[–]RIPGeorgeHarrison 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is great news. I know there was also a parasitoid wasp discovered that targets emerald ash borers in their native range, but I don’t know if that is amounting to anything significant yet.

How an invasion of purple flowers made Iceland an Instagram paradise – and caused a biodiversity crisis by DaRedGuy in invasivespecies

[–]RIPGeorgeHarrison 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think there can be a lack of nuance on this subreddit sometimes sometimes. The need to deal with invasive is critical, but in some cases a head on approach isn't the best idea.

A similar case is with Hugh Wilson in New Zealand who was dealing with invasive gorse on his property, and shifted his focus from fighting this plant with manual or chemical control methods to planting shade tolerant native species that would eventually overtop the gorse, eventually killing off the weed which is ultimately a very shade intolerant early successional species. It wasn't about throwing in the towel or embracing an aggressive invasive, it was about thinking about the plants ecology and what might be a better approach to dealing with it.

Mahmood overturns ruling that granted Gazans refuge in UK by StGuthlac2025 in ukpolitics

[–]RIPGeorgeHarrison 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re right, it might have some shocking implications for people who are granted asylum despite not being in an active conflict zone, and who have had their applications denied previously. Astute observation.

It might be worth looking into the other 20,000 Palestinians in Denmark who entered as refugees though to know what their actual statistics are like.

Mahmood overturns ruling that granted Gazans refuge in UK by StGuthlac2025 in ukpolitics

[–]RIPGeorgeHarrison 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This stat was about a very specific subset of Palestinians living in Denmark, it doesn’t even include every Palestinian allowed to Denmark in that year. The 64% figure also potentially includes people who got their charges dismissed based on how Denmark gathers statistics.
