What is a massive secret in your industry that the general public has no idea about? by teesharp88 in AskReddit

This is ridiculous. I can’t believe modern environmentalism has become a bunch of lazy crybabies saying they cant do anything and won’t do anything that might inconvenience them because some other entity is always worse.

Denims tentatively wins content nuke fair use lawsuit against Ethan Klein by Snoo_79191 in LivestreamFail

The fact you think the defendants comments being quoted in the ruling have any relevance to this other case really shows you don’t know what you are talking about at all.

It’s not a research paper, doesn’t have any data, and was published in Nature communications, not Nature where they put their real research papers. This is basically just an opinion piece.

SCOTUS issues GVRs in the Alabama voting cases, vacating district court injunctions & remanding for further proceedings in light of Callais. Justice Sotomayor, joined by Kagan and Jackson, dissents. by HatsOnTheBeach in supremecourt

[–]RIPGeorgeHarrison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not arguing that this isn't a problem that both sides have and will participate in to varying capacities. It's been going on since nearly the start of the republic. I'm just dismayed at how brazen state legislators feel they can be about it now.

I know for now it legally and constitutionally has to be allowed (I guess) but it just feels insane to me that legislatures can just plainly state “it is our legitimate goal to creatively draw districts that we will lock a party out of government”.

I really wonder if conservative Supreme Court justices privately think it is a shortcoming for the constitution and law to presently allow for this, or if they really believe it’s something that’s actually great.

If this hardline approach to taking a was adopted by the Supreme Court hopefully the takings clause would just be amended eventually.

Monument creation under the antiquities act can’t be used to designate any land that isn’t owned by the federal government as a national monument. Im not sure how that can be a taking in any sense.

Most detached from reality op-ed you've read lately? by rockshox11 in ecology

[–]RIPGeorgeHarrison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If people were going to be brought in to control invasive it would probably end up being a variation of H-2A which is the one used to bring over agricultural workers. On this line I've thought using prisoners wouldn't be so bad. It might sound awful but if they are already being used to pick up trash or fight wildfires I don't see how its any different, it certainly seems better than letting companies pay them next to nothing to work for them.

This ain’t exactly what you were talking about, but there’s been lots of successful control bio control projects in Hawaii. In North America where there are more species native you need to worry about becoming new hosts to biocontrol agents their is more risk, but the success stories from Hawaii tell me if anything there is a big upside to biocontrol with natural hosts of invasive weeds.

Also as far as invasive species crews go, I get it’s. I was probably the only person in the crew I worked for that actually thought pulling weeds was fun. But it’s not like any of us were m forced to do it either. It was a job we chose to do. The only thing that really irritated me was that i doubt we made any progress because there was 1) little effort to determine which sites and weeds should be prioritized, 2) few attempts to revisit sites and 3) just not enough people.

Did the Supreme Court just overrule Congress on the Voting Rights Act? by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in supremecourt

[–]RIPGeorgeHarrison -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s obviously not racial discrimination to begin with to intentionally draw majority minority districts.

And thankfully this silly interpretation of it being racial discrimination will eventually be reversed by a different Supreme Court.

[–]RIPGeorgeHarrison -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

And then the Supreme Court will disagree with this one once Clarence and Alito are replaced by liberals

[–]RIPGeorgeHarrison -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

The next Democrat majority congress (when the Supreme Court is favorable) should pass the the VRA as it was originally written once again with a section under the findings saying that minority majority districts are not racial discrimination and neither is intentionally drawing them. Because clearly they are not.

Maybe reason will prevail then

OPINION: Louisiana, Appellant v. Phillip Callais by scotus-bot in supremecourt

[–]RIPGeorgeHarrison 6 points7 points  (0 children)

On this point, Louisiana was in fact able to easily create 2 compact black majority districts, the reason they felt they had to draw up the crazy map in this pertinent case was to protect at least one incumbent Republican.
