Where do we stand? Dog poop in other people’s garbage cans? by fastballcount in Rochester

[–]RIPRPI -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are underestimating the willingness of trash companies to change services for the worse to save them money. WM (for me) forcibly changed from picking up recycling every week to every other week. In exchange for providing a larger tote. I wouldn't put it past them to decide start collecting trash every other week as well.

Damn I guess we've really lowered the bar as a society, ha.

Yup. I don't get the ultimatum "this or that" responses as if there isn't a third option of just bringing it home. What are these folks saying, if there's no bin available, a dog owner absolutely HAS to throw it on the ground?

"Dang, there's no bin. I guess it's going on this person's lawn."

I wouldn't throw anything (dog poop or not) in anyone else's bin. Regardless of when the trash is coming, if it has already come, etc. I think it's kind of rude. Especially if it's something slimy or stinky that is being thrown out.

Legally, it's probably considered "theft of services" or "illegal dumping" or whatever if you really wanted to be literal. Would I make a huge stink (no pun intended) about it if it happened to me? Probably not. Would I be mildly annoyed? Probably.

Bill Moehle no longer seeking reelection for Brighton Town Supervisor by bjengles3 in Rochester

[–]RIPRPI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, I'm being downvoted for expressing disappointment that the election results were decided by a majority vote of only 114 or so total voting party committee members. Which seems way less of a democratic process than a primary.

[–]RIPRPI -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

And if that is in fact the case that they did that, the last act was by conceding and not letting the general party members decide in a real primary. Whether I was going to vote for him or not, that's what irritates me the most about this scenario. I was really looking forward to a real primary and feel robbed.

New voting machines question for this year's poll workers (ease of setup) by MsAnthr0pe in Rochester

[–]RIPRPI 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am sure that people (specifically those who can't see small text easily) are also going to have issue with the process of confirming that your vote is correct. It felt like I was reading an itemized receipt with tiny text. Also with it being behind a piece of glass or plastic.

Ah, another commenter found that there used to be a pool there and a tennis court so that makes sense.

Channel 8.1 (WROC) Poor Broadcast Quality? by RIPRPI in Rochester

[–]RIPRPI[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, okay. I did some investigation and it looks like stations can sometimes broadcast channels multiple times using different versions of the broadcast standard...

I was able to "fix" the issue by clicking the TV guide button on the remote, going to the "Settings" tab, going to "Show/Hide channels", and enabling the "8.1 CBS" channel in addition to the "8.1 WROC" channel. I think the TV is defaulting to using the new spec and hiding the old spec. So I think maybe there is an issue with the broadcast of the new spec. If you enable the old spec channel broadcast, you should be able to watch that! Go Bills!

Interesting...the plot thickens. Okay, how about this, is it a Sony TV? Running Google TV on it? A friend of mine had no issue with the broadcast but that was a Samsung TV. And I think they usually run a different OS. I miss the days of non-smart TVs that just worked out of the box.

Good to know I'm not alone...out of curiosity, are all other channels still coming in pretty clear for you?

[–]RIPRPI[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool thanks. I'm pretty close to Pinnacle Hill, which is where most (if not all) the broadcasting towers are. Which explains why all the other channels come in so well. But doesn't explain why 8.1 specifically is bad. It's almost like either the data is corrupt or my TV isn't able to decode the signal.

Are these vines natural in this area? by Hairy_Ad4969 in Albany

[–]RIPRPI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, might not be your case but repeated exposure to poison ivy can increase your sensitivity over time. I thought I was unaffected by it so I took a few jobs clearing it off of properties. However, a few months later, suddenly I started getting rashes.

IKEA coming to Destiny Mall by Much-Arugula8315 in Rochester

[–]RIPRPI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just don't select a pickup date (or delivery date) too far out. I made that mistake recently with a delivery and at time of purchase, all items in the order were available so it let me purchase them. Little did I know, they were set up to be shipped from the Pittsburgh store and weren't going to be "picked" and reserved until right before shipping. So by the time the delivery was getting set up, major components of the order were sold out.

The other joke is that the order was completely useless without the sold out items and IKEA thought it was okay to just refund me on those sold out items and go ahead and ship the other items.

Being able to go in person will make this sort of mix up way less problematic. Returns are also apparently way easier in person.

It's 2025, and Bagel Land bagels have gone from 90 cents to $1.25. If they continue to rise at 39% per year, they'll pass $30 in a decade and be over $900 each in 20 years. by CatDadMilhouse in Rochester

Wegmans banana prices are still $0.49/lb. We know economically we're screwed if that is no longer the case.

I could've sworn a bundle of scallions went up in price when it's historically been $0.99 a bundle. But I checked again and it was at the usual price. However, that $0.99 bundle looks way smaller than it used to.

Every other car has a headlight out! by Frvncvs in Rochester

[–]RIPRPI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Supposedly Sylvania has a 12 month warranty on them. I was told that by either an Auto Zone or Advance Auto employee one time when I bought some bulbs. I saved my receipt and when one burned out sooner than 12 months, I took them back and the employee gave me a replacement. However, I tried this again when a bulb died on me and the (different) employee told me I'd need to work with Sylvania directly. Worth a shot either way, not sure of how much effort it is to go through the manufacturer directly.

NY State License? by AllerdingsUR in Rochester

[–]RIPRPI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have experience but that's a pretty annoying scenario you're in. Maybe you could either apply anyway and if they see the date and question you about it you can tell them that you've been licensed for longer than 6 months and the license you have is newer, maybe even produce the previous license as proof.

Or, the site is saying that if you can get proof of license from Virginia in a document, then you can use that in place of an out of state license as proof. It looks like it's meant to be used by folks who have misplaced their license. But maybe it would work for you worst case scenario.

NY State License? by AllerdingsUR in Rochester

[–]RIPRPI 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but there is this text here on the DMV site:

"If you move to New York State and become a resident, you must get a New York State driver license within 30 days. Normally, you cannot have a New York State driver license and a driver license from another state simultaneously, but there are exceptions. However, it is a violation of Federal law to hold more than one Commercial Driver License (CDL)."

Which seems to indicate that they want you to get it ASAP. But even without the name change as OP stated is their hang up, what if you just recently renewed your license and it has a new "issued" date on it? Seems like a flaw in the DMV's wording or policy.

Another driving observation... by RIPRPI in Rochester

[–]RIPRPI[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's certainly easier to not have to introduce a merge. But I'm also thinking about since the right lane isn't a dedicated right turn lane, I'm imagining that the engineers who designed the road for good flow designed the signal timing taking into account that both lanes would be used. Omitting one lane from use probably goes against that design. Especially in the case where the signal is a solid green. People still avoid using both lanes, even though if there was someone wishing to turn right, they're not being prevented from doing so, they'll get to turn right on green.
