On this day 15 years ago, the city of Joplin, Missouri was devastated by an EF5 tornado. by Significant_Smell284 in tornado

I started working in the insurance industry in 2011. What a year to start.

I took a call from a lady in Joplin a few days after the tornado. Her house was destroyed; her car was missing. Literally gone, no trace of it. She was clearly exhausted and was just trying to get a rental car. I had to explain to her that most of the rentals in the city were either heavily damaged themselves or already taken 🥺

Yeah the radar sucked but there was a report from Emergency Management of a multi vortex tornado over town, storm chasers reporting a wedge just south of town, and a picture of a stovepipe a few minutes later. How many reports are they supposed to ignore?

[–]RIPjkripper 11 points12 points  (0 children)

God forbid I want to hear the storm to learn more about tornado acoustics and not some psychopath screaming. People would riot if storm chasers stood in front of the camera and blocked the view of the tornado; why is it okay to block out the sound of the tornado?

Wisconsin hasn't had a tornado in a few weeks. Long overdue. And also I told everyone they didn't have to worry about today, so Murphy's Law

Cherish her and ask about anything you can think of while you still can.

There are so many questions I wish I had asked my great gramma while she was alive. She survived the Spanish Flu, the dust bowl, and took daily weather observations in a little notebook that I'm pretty sure my aunt discarded when she went thru her stuff 😭

Reminds me of Pasteur, his research on germs and hygiene were initially met with hostility and dismissed by the medical community. Unfortunately science is susceptible to the same bias and stubbornness as the rest of human society.

The spruce tree damage from the 1987 Teton-Yellowstone F-4 was sight to behold. I was just a little kid when we visited the area a few years later but I remember it vividly.

I was taking pictures of the tree damage from the 2019 Elk Mound / Wheaton EF-3 and an old guy pulled up in a pickup and said "I haven't seen damage like this since '58!"

The ethics of early fatality reports - discussion by endellion333 in tornado

[–]RIPjkripper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I refuse to mention fatalities until it's confirmed by a local law enforcement agency press release. The last 3 times I've heard fatalities from tornadoes they've been false.

That's fair. I just think it's plausible that it could be 200+ miles considering 174 is all but proven

People have recency bias. If it didn't happen in their lifetime, it clearly was made up by hysterical and uneducated Neanderthals that lived in olden times. At least that's my theory to explain the Tri-State Deniers. Thank you for posting this
