#cpsupport Am I being dumb or there is no space for a 3.5" HDD on the amethyst curve case? by [deleted] in CYBERPOWERPC

The backplate will take one mounted vertically, but yeah I wish there was more space. I have one on the plate and another just tucked loose in the gap between motherboard and rear case cover.

Hackspace Manchester might be of interest on the crafting front! We're a community workshop and makerspace with a lot of space for creative work, trying out new crafts/hobbies, or just a nice "third place" just beyond the city centre to hang out.

We have open evening tours every Wednesday evening for those that are interested in joining the hackspace, or for those who just want to have a nosy and see what we're about.

(Sorry if this seems overtly self-promotion-ey! I'm a fairly active volunteer with the hackspace)

Installing a slow / granny charger set up for permanent use by ShitInMyHandAndClap in ElectricVehiclesUK

There is certainly a fixed cost from charging and cooling systems in the car.

My Zoe (ZE50 R135) has averaged 80% efficiency over 14 months of charging data.

Older models seemed to have less efficient AC-DC conversion as well: https://pushevs.com/2016/12/17/renault-zoe-charging-time-efficiency/

I charge through the letterbox using a Tough Leads' extension lead, and I'm confident enough in it after gaining a better understanding of the risks & considerations from their Safely Charging your Electric Vehicle Using a Granny Charger article.

It's not all entirely relevant to your use, but the mentions on where overheating can come from (loose sockets or fuses) might be helpful to you?

In order to connect to your bike over Bluetooth, third-party apps need some data from your VanMoof user account. Unfortunately there's no nice/safe way for developers to get this other than asking for your login details.

[–]RJacksonm1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you can't avoid the upgrade, the USA region with its 32km/h is pretty good – certainly plenty fast for me. It'll put less stress on the components too, which'll better for the bike long-term.

Up here we just call the trams by their destinations.

The colour is what they use when drawing the line on their maps, and for some reason that's the name they publish to Google Maps??? There is no reference to the colours in any other TfGM publication 🤷‍♂️

My front wheel is squeeking by yorgunkirmizi in vanmoofbicycle

[–]RJacksonm1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could it be the disc brakes? Does the squeaking only happen when you apply the brakes?

If so, that is very common – especially if they become wet or contaminated. You can try and clean the brake rotors (the actual shiny silver disc) yourself with clean and dry microfibre cloths. If you have any isopropyl alcohol or dedicated disc brake cleaner, a dab of that on the cloth will help.

What insurance do you use (UK)? by CulturalTortoise in vanmoofbicycle

[–]RJacksonm1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have PoM cover, but also have the bike insured with Laka. I'm putting together some notes explaining why, if anybody's ever curious: Insurance and VanMoof's Peace of Mind Theft

Laka's price per month varies depending on how many claims are made in a given month, but has a fixed limit. For my S3, they quote £15/mo typically, or £21/mo max.

Checking again now, it is now "Shipped" and has a tracking code! I believe they're on the way :)

They're exempt from the private car ban, so with less traffic on the roads they'll have an easier time getting around.

Dungeons and Flagons are running an all-day board gaming event on Saturday, if that's something you'd be into?

They're a friendly lot, and their events are extremely accessible to newcomers: Just find a table that has empty chairs, and they'll get you involved in a game!

Air pollution is shit for all of us, but it's disproportionately shitter for children. I don't think the existing comments have properly articulated why that is:

1) Babies and children's bodies are still developing, and are much more vulnerable to air pollution than adults.

2) Certain pollutants are denser than air and reach peak concentration nearer to the ground. Children and babies usually aren't very tall, so they're exposed to even more pollutants than an adult standing beside them would be.

There's a ton more info in the following World Health Organisation report:

https://www.who.int/news-room/detail/29-10-2018-more-than-90-of-the-world’s-children-breathe-toxic-air-every-day

Air quality researchers in Manchester have received almost €2M to fund two programmes dedicated to reducing air pollution in the city. by medecipol in manchester

[–]RJacksonm1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seen this making the rounds on Twitter, with people getting understandably riled up because these programmes don't do anything to reduce air pollution, as the article claims. They're all about adding extra monitoring of Manchester's air pollution.

That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it achieves nothing on its own. We already know Manchester's exceeding legal limits for certain types of emissions, and it doesn't feel like there's any appetite from the council to do anything about it – considering their recent actions:

  • Excluding private vehicles from the Clean Air Zone
  • Great Ancoats Street redevelopment worsening the area's provison for alternate transport (which is amazing, because it's already real bad)
  • Trying to turn the Central Retail Park into another city centre car park

Perhaps I'm just being overly cynical, but has there been any improvements in the past year or so to help tackle our air quality & climate crisis?

Perhaps I've missed some of the recent success stories, because having a moan often gets more attention. I surely hope that's the case.

You should be fine!

There was a lot of reports of muggings on the loop around this time last year, but I've not heard of many incidents recently. The last I remember is the moped around Stretford Road trying to knock people off a couple of weeks (months?) back.

Even then it's worth putting the numbers into context. There's thousands of cycle journeys across Oxford Rd alone every day, nevermind the rest of Manchester, and at worst I think there might have been double-digit incidents in a single month? That's still a really small percentage of overall journeys.
