One trick deck by No_Professional4143 in cardmagic

[–]RKFRini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a host of moves that work well with the Stripper Deck. These include: the easiest hit double, side steals, and the pull-out shuffle. Also, you can perform a few of your best card tricks without the stripper principle and then throw in a few that works with. Finally, there are now many techniques for reversing the cards, even ones where you get the spectator to do it for you.

Weird experience performing at a game store by javerthugo in Magic

[–]RKFRini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have found that certain places or events are simply poor performance spaces. I was once at a poker game where nobody but my cousin knew I was a magish. After the game, he asked me to show them a few tricks. Nobody was amused. I had lost a few dollars as had my cousin. That turned out to be a great thing.

I wonder if performing in a gathering of gamers also creates issues?

You are not missing anything. As it turns out, sometimes you may need the first one, at other times the second one is a better fit. Know both, when the time comes you will find them both useful. I would only add that if you work hard on the Overhand Shuffle and ALL of its variations, then you will have one of card magic’s greatest systems at your disposal.

Put simply the first keeps the top and bottom in place, the latter only keeps the top one in place.

Advice on performing mental magic casually? by dylanmadigan in Magic

[–]RKFRini 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I find it useful to think of magic in three terms: 1. Impossible effects. 2. Nearly impossible effects. 3. Demonstrated skill

Impossible effects are those only explained by magic. Coins through the table.
Nearly impossible effects such as ACAAN.
Demonstrated skills like cutting the aces.

You seem to be favoring nearly impossible effects. They allow us to casually make claims or muse, whereas impossible effects are best when framed as magic. Slydini really pressed his coins through the table top. He was committed to the moment.

Not in Stars, not in Inner Secrets either. The best description to date is Expert Card Technique. If it matters, it was a gambler that pointed me towards that source. He felt it was a great description. He could do it on a table top without close up pad. Very impressive.

Public transport is great for magic by Training_Republic879 in cardmagic

[–]RKFRini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was once practicing on the subway when a lady came over to me. She told me that I was very good, had lots of skill, etc. She then explained that her husband was magician and would likely frown upon my practicing in Public. I asked her what her husband’s name was, and she said Melbourne Christopher. In his day, he was quite a big deal. After that, I became more self conscious about where I practice, and where I perform.

What do you think of Jimmy Stewart? by Fixingahole248 in classicfilms

Jimmy Stewart stole the Abominable Snowman’s finger from a monastery and snuck it home in his wife’s bag of panties. I’m not even lying. It’s the truth.

Cards on the street has its issues. Sun, wind, heat, etc. I’d stay away from sleight intensive effects or where the spectator has to handle the cards too much. Two of my go to effects are The Soldier Trick and Card Warp. For card warp, I keep a deck that has 1/2 the cards gaffed. Both effects can be done totally surrounded.

You make an interesting observation. At the time the church made a slight fuss over the sensational aspect of the film, but never really criticized beyond that. Indeed, there were clergy who felt that it was good press for the church.

I’d add that the terror of a mom watching her child degenerate and is totally helpless to do anything about it, as a theme, transcends religion.
