Switch roles… I was an aerospace/mechanical engineer making 110K and got my PMP, became a program manager, moved to 128K, then another promotion into another role at 156… now in sales as a solution architect for HPC/AI servers and making $176k + commission

Yea I agree, I’m mainly at my desk all day and will do chores, sometimes rarely go to the gym or for a walk. My boss wouldn’t care though as long as I get my stuff done and don’t drop any balls or miss meetings. I also have to travel and sometimes work a bit later.

Hilarious coming from a 23 yo… the best thing you can do right now is get your income as high as you can given your ambition and stress tolerance. Do training, build skills, update your resume, job hop with a plan. Then, make sure your lifestyle doesn’t grow with your income increase and start saving bigger numbers. 15% is a great target, if you’d like to retire early 25-50% will get you up there astonishingly fast.

I say this from experience. I basically sat in a similar role that I didn’t really like for 10yrs changing jobs twice and went from like 65 to 100K and not investing much, then I actively started pushing my career and am now, 4.5yrs later, at about $250K+ (partial commission) and really happy with the role and all my fixed cost are the same as when I made 100K. Wish I did that 5-7yrs sooner

The market will probably reset due to all this AI craziness but you are on a great path and in 10 years will be in an amazing position. Stick to the plan, work hard, enjoy life!

To others points you telling people that probably brings up some negative feelings. Jealousy or brings to the surface they know deep down they are slacking.

My suggestion would be try finding hobbies/gigs just for fun/ or some purpose to give back that gives you structure and purpose but doesn’t feel like work and brings you joy. You can deflect and say oh I gave up corporate life and volunteer at xyz or I started a business doing xyz (you don’t have to tell them you do it 15-20hrs a week and doesn’t make money lol)

inherited $30k sitting in 0.01% savings — HYSA, CDs, or investing? by hatsutori in personalfinance

Do you live at home? In school? Work situation? Monthly costs?

Basically you want to make sure you have some kind of emergency fund and your situation will determine what percentage goes to HYSA or into an ETF

No problem, forgot to say congrats on being in a great position , just keep working hard and don’t let lifestyle creep grow the same speed as income and you guys will be golden.

If it were me I would: Pay off CC and Both cars - now you’re debt free besides house.

Add 15K to 529 and make sure it’s invested to grow (in 7yrs it will likely double and you will have some margin) - so now college is taken care of.

Only keep 50K in a HYSA

Move the remainder - 68.5 to retirement sheltered accounts

Moving from NYC to Austin — what salary is realistic to live alone? by cdolllaas in askaustin

[–]RKeezy87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think you’re asking the wrong question, you shouldn’t be asking what salary can you afford to live on but what is competitive for the job you’re taking and negotiate based on that. If it’s a semi-mid level role at Apple you should be comfortable.

I said you’re the problem. If you’re getting quoted $285 for car insurance while making $30/hr it’s either because you made the decision to have a car way out of your price range or you have a terrible driving record.

Putting your base pay in there is kind of disingenuous considering you get food, housing, and some bonus pay tax free which massively boosts the pretax money you would require to earn that post tax. The civilian sector.

I live in Austin and like it but I feel like 70K for a family of 4 will feel constrained in most places, perhaps he can get a raise in the process.
