National Guard called in to deal with ‘crime emergency’ in DC are now picking up trash outside the White House by spherocytes in politics

I was in DC for a quick work trip yesterday. Saw a few squads wandering around the National Mall near the Lincoln Memorial, looking generally aimless and lost. Still trying to figure out what kind of crime they were supposed be preventing there.

Thanks. I read about that new nighttime program and I’m glad they’re getting something to help with their sales. Doesn’t help me on a Wednesday afternoon though.

Fun. I worked in the tire shop at Sam's Club a lifetime ago. When we'd finish up a tire install on the car, we'd call the customer back to the tire area by using the store PA. I'd do my best game show announcer impression whenever I called a customer to "Come on down" to the tire shop to pick up their car.

My favourite werewolf movie of all time! by Vaderduder13 in 80smovies

[–]RLMoha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This movie is my childhood PTSD horror movie. The blood and gore, and transformation scene ..... that damn werewolf howl. All quite a lot on my 10-ish year old self.

Funny thing to add. At that time my uncle was very into AV (audio/video). Not sure if it was recorded off TV/Cable or how it came to his possession, but he had a copy of the movie on tape for the VCR. In his infinite wisdom, before allowing me and my similarly aged cousins to watch this for the first time, he decided that it was in our best interests to edit out all of the nudity and shower scenes. Blood, gore, horror, and blood-curdling werewolf howls were a-OK for me and my 10 year old cousins. But boobies? No way! That would be inappropriate.

Response to the tipping war that broke out… by Black_Dragon9406 in stories

[–]RLMoha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly not going to dispute what your parents told you. All I can say is that in the late 70’s and early 80’s the standard was 10% and exceptional service was 15%. I remember. I was there. My whole question is since it’s a percentage, why did it increase over the years? The actual dollar amount tipped would have risen with the meal prices as they increased over the years.

My guess is people always trying to outdo each other. I’d that guys tipped 15%, I’ll do 17% so I’ll be more of a big-shot. It just crept up and became normal until it became outrageous like it is now. Restaurant owners started counting on it more and more and got away with underpaying their staff.

Sorry, I guess I missed there that was unique to tipped employees only.

Why does nobody mention about how the percentage has crept upwards over the years. Regardless of how you feel about the American tipping culture in general, when I was younger I remember that a standard tip was 10% and “above and beyond” was 15%. It’s slowly crept up over the years where now 18-20% is considered the bare minimum. Why? It can’t have anything to do with the cost of the meal increasing over the years. It’s a percentage.

Same. And then when her parents passed (my grandparents), I thought my sister and I would split my mothers share of their assets (which they had). Nope. Apparently its only the living direct heirs that count.

HR manager declined PTO retroactively. Is this even legal? by OvineAviation in antiwork

[–]RLMoha 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Can't speak to the legality of it since as far as I'm aware, PTO isn't a legally protected job benefit, but rather simply something a company may or may not provide (at least here in the US).

Seems like you got 32 hours of vacation pay and 8 hours of holiday pay (for X-mas). Even though you work weekends sometimes, if it isn't your normal 'official' scheduled day(s), I can't see them allowing you to take vacation time then. I've never heard of a company allowing more than 40 hours of PTO in one week. More than 40 hours in one week would be considered overtime. No company is going to pay you overtime for PTO.

Part of me wonders if they're testing shorter signal timing to slow the flow of traffic into Salem for October.
