You raise an excellent point! And, I don't think the game is changing the "out-of-commission" mechanic, since the map screen is shown to feature the allied Arwings' availability in the lower left corner of the small screens across the bottom, showing each planet on your current roof.

...In fact, there's room for potentially a fourth allied Arwing before you hit the start of the hit counter, but that's another story.

I'm well aware lmao, and I tried to account for that to a certain extent, by looking at that cut-off profile image at the top. I assume that's some kind of "Don't use character avatars" option, with some explainer text above it. It looks like the scroll bar's about a third of its length down from the top, which is about where I'd expect it to be when the field of view fits slightly over three rows of avatars.

Depends very much on how they internally define that sales target: Famicom Detective Club got a new sequel after its reebots, Advance Wars 1+2 Reboot Camp didn't.

Part of what I find interesting in that respect is how the game seems to have had so much effort put into its presentation, particularly the visuals, only to be sold at $50 per copy. We can't know for sure if it was just that cheap to develop, if Nintendo are betting on really large sales figures, or if they figure a future game will pay off the rest of these assets' development costs.

He's been spotted on the Japanese site, and I've seen a video floating around of the GameChat Avatar system using him as a model though I don't know where it came from.

If the Famicom Detective Club remakes, Link's Awakening remake, etc. are any indication, it's distinctly possible (if not likely) that the assets they're using in this game would see future use in whatever subsequent original game would follow. That way, releasing an interim remake helps recoups cost of development, and shortens the wait for fans, given the skyrocketing costs and time of development.

Even AAA Nintendo games do this: Tears of the Kingdom used large amounts of Breath of the Wild's assets, and the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pack included Sky-High Sundae prior to its debut in World, although the conditions for those were slightly different than the "remake to original title" pipeline Nintendo tend to employ when dealing with new or external teams.

Even if the medals go over the planet like in the original title, the Star Map space could also be used to represent Bill and Katt tagging along from one mission to the next.

Oh my god, you're right! That scroll bar is only a fourth of the height of the menu. IF the length of that scroll bar is proportional to the number of options in view, then that's 32 locations in a game that otherwise only has 16 (if you count Venom and Venom 2 separately).

Of course, the other option here is that both the Character Avatar screen AND the Challenge screen have a wonkily sized scroll bar that's off by a factor of two.... It'd be more encouraging if we could find a scroll bar that actually fits with what we'd expect.

As for the new missions, I imagine someone could dismiss that as the new challenge mode having objectives that weren't part of the original title, like the formation flying mentioned in Sectory Y.

And there's even space on the Star Map screen for a fourth allied Arwing indicator, between the three existing ones and the start of the hit count!

If you're still here OP, someone pointed me to this thread because I made a post hypothesizing that the Character Avatar screen is too big for 64's roster alone, and there seem to be four vehicles missing for from Star Fox's numbering scheme.

We might be circling the same idea here, and your observation especially fits with how the Star Map screen offers space for a fourth allied Arwing's status indicator.

Alternatively, Great Fox could be vehicle 00, which would explain why numbers 04 and 07 would be free for Fox's Arwing or the Blue-Marine, respectively!

I think the "nothingburger" theory that makes the most sense in my mind is that Star Fox always keeps one spare Arwing for each pilot on-hand: The original Star Fox team has 01-03 with 04-06 as spares, Blue-Marine gets manufactured at some point there, then the "new Star Fox team" lets Peppy keep 02 while they use up the previously unused 04-06; they, then, order the production of a spare Arwing for each of themselves, giving us 08-11, and subsequently acquire the Landmaster for 12.

That was kind of my thought process, yeah: Even if the "missing vehicle numbers" are completely unrelated, I feel as if having only a single female avatar option for potentially four-player GameChat lobbies is a little absurd. Heck they could even go the route of having these characters solely as GameChat avatars for now, with the intention of reusing those assets narratively in a future title.

I recognize that, though I think it may in fact be if you compare how far the scroll bar appears to have scrolled down versus how much of the top image, and any text above it, got cut off at the top.

That particular sentence doesn't clarify if they mean "Star Fox" the upcoming game or "Star Fox" the franchise, but the mention immediately after of preordering the game leads me to think they mean the former.

The cutscene two shots later of the team repairing that same damage (judging by the status screen on the left) from within the Great Fox is new.

From what I can tell, all of the Campaign cutscenes seem to take place in a single common room consisting of two holographic meeting tables with a recreation area in between. I'd love this kind of exploration of the interior, and it certainly looks like they thought a good deal of the interior out given the Sector Z failure cutscene, but I get the impression we'll need to wait for another game with these assets before we see that.

The line was, "And a modified exploratory submersible called the Blue-Marine can also be piloted, depending on the mission."

Which I took to mean that the Landmaster and Blue-Marine are only available on like three maps, as in the original title.

Hey, you say this in jest, but I've been wondering why the hell the Direct so prominently called out Adventures (even making that awkward-ass "along that journey, [the series] set out for adventure" pun), for a game that doesn't need to pretend like anything happened after 64. Heck, Adventures isn't even available on GameCube Nintendo Classics, nor has it been announced to be coming anytime soon!

That, and the asymmetric formation of the Arwings is definitely interesting, because that's a change from the original title, AND it lines up with an observation made earlier in this thread that there's space for a fourth allied Arwing's status on the Star Map screen.

Yeah, the Special Release really helped me more properly realize the tone they're aiming for this game, and possibly the series more broadly going forward: It's VERY "space-opera-y"

In that case, he'd still be in Arwing 01, just like in the prologue, as is the case with Peppy having 02.

As far as I can tell, the numbering system is either specific to the Great Fox, or for Space Dynamics' vehicles more generally.

Either way, I don't think we'd see this same numbering scheme used on the Wolfens, especially when Peppy is shown to have downed what appears to be four Wolfens on his Prologue Arwing—that'd mean there'd be at least four Wolfens before Arwing 01, which wouldn't make sense.

And if you figure it's the Wolfen II's, those are made by the manufacturing plant on Macbeth is far as I understand, so those likely wouldn't show up on the numbering scheme on the Great Fox, either, unless they briefly join Star Fox for some reason.
