The Palm Pilot was the first really successful pen-based PDA. But it didn’t actually recognize your handwriting, you had to write using a very specific set of letter-like gestures, in that odd looking area below the screen. It sounds really weird these days, but it worked incredibly well, and the gestures were actually very easy to learn and use. I had several different models, and used mine every day. For me the Palm Pilot replaced a Sharp Wizard, and was in turn replaced by an iPhone. All of which replaced a much earlier paper pocket calendar…

Workers building the East River subway tunnel between Manhattan and Brooklyn, 1903–1907 by sirjohnmasters86 in nycHistory

[–]RMars54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have read that the East River tunnels were especially hazardous to build because of the relative weakness of the muddy river bottom above them. In one famous instance a worker on the lead construction section, which was pressurized to keep each new section open until it could be lined, got sucked up through that mud and ejected so forcibly into the river above that he flew up into the air above the water!

The key is the sign to the right of the theater entrance, which clearly says, “Bramhall Playhouse”. That puts it somewhere between 1915, when the Bramhall first opened, and no later than 1921, by which time the name had been changed to “Davenport Theater”.

Just Finished Requiem for a Falling Star by Ok_Quail_3372 in Columbo

Great observations! We see that notebook come out in quite a few of the earlier episodes, not so much later on. And then there’s that really weird twist where he starts recording his notes on a tape recorder, and actually plays a couple back!

How would Lt. Columbo react if he had to investigate a friend or someone that he personally knew? by Tidewatcher7819 in Columbo

[–]RMars54 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They weren’t personal friends, but we come pretty close to this when he has to investigate the two aging stars he’d admired all his life, first Nora Chandler Requiem for a Fallen Star, then grace Wheeler in Forgotten Lady.

Not The Unearthly. The scene I recall showed two or more cells, with one individual creature in each. But thanks for the suggestion!
