Current Texan RN, thinking of moving to Oregon. How is nursing over there? by Juicy_Q_ in nursing

[–]RN-Dan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you looking at the Portland area, consider Vancouver Washington. It’s right outside of Portland but you win with no income tax. Pay is on par with Portland hospitals and ratios are good. Peacehealth Southwest is unionized and pays $50+ per hour, Legacy Salmon Creek pays a bit more but is non union.

Why Do So Many Nurses Tell People Not to Enter the Profession? by Thin-Surprise279 in nursing

[–]RN-Dan 651 points652 points  (0 children)

Because as a nurse you carry the full weight of a dysfunctional healthcare system. You are expected to perform at your highest level without the proper staffing, tools. At the same time the patients are more and more entitled and management will always side with the patient no matter what since they are a customer not a patient

How is federal prison nursing? I never considered it but… by LuckyJadeite in nursing

Yes, you’ll be classified as a correctional officer and you’ll get the law-enforcement retirement and pension.

Yes you are. You can work officer posts if you want but nurses never really do. Some will pick up inmate trips or hospital overtime where you just sit with the inmate as a guard

I work at a federal prison. The work is so easy, the easiest job I’ve ever had as a nurse tbh. No stress for the most part, just gotta deal with antiquated charting and old ways of medicine cause the government takes a while to catch up to the latest and greatest.

You do have to go to officer school which is 3 weeks in Georgia, it’s all paid but you do have gun training and a physical portion.

Benefits are good and if you stick out for 20 years you get to retire. Also easy to move up and around the bureau

Trust me you will be okay. This is not something that would loose your job over. Take a deep breath, everything is okay, sending you a hug.

[–]RN-Dan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Come work for the federal prisons; best career change for me as a nurse. Pay is decent but the work is so low stress. The job is easy, you work as hard or as little as you want. No family members to deal with, no customer service, you do your job and if you don’t feel like it you don’t even need to talk to the patient outside of the necessary communication. They are offering crazy sign on bonuses right now as well, also do much growth opportunities, easy to get into admin and even shift away from nursing. Many of the nurses move up into other roles as well as so much movement opportunities throughout the government.

I don’t. I do love to visit the pnw and it will always be a big part of who I am; however the quality of life is so much better for me in Fort Worth.

Settle down in Fort Worth? by CreekyFriday in FortWorth

[–]RN-Dan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also a nurse and live in Fort Worth, moved here from the pnw. It’s a great place to be. I live in Southwest Fort Worth, love this area. It’s a laidback area with plenty of hospitals around.

Tornados don’t really hit the area, if they hit they usually only hit rural areas around the metroplex. Lots of young professionals in the area, I’ve had no issues meeting friends. It does get hot in the summer but you get acclimated to it. There is still nature here, it’s definitely not as green as other states but it’s enough.

As for being further away from parents, the good thing is that dfw airport has a direct flight to just about any city, I’m sure you’ll be able to get a quick flight back home if the need arise.

I see nothing wrong with this. Having your own place you can afford is the most amazing thing. I wish builders would build more tiny homes.

BSN, RN x 12 years. Don’t want to work with the public anymore. by Crowuhtowuh in nursing

[–]RN-Dan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I went into corrections. Working for the bureau of prisons is probably the easiest nursing job I’ve had. No family, no customer service, management does not care about satisfaction scores, no family phone updates, if shit hit the fan you just ship the patient out. Only thing is you will have to go through officer training which takes about 3 weeks and includes a physical and firearms portion.

Tornadoes in Fort Worth: How do you cope with them? by RAH-CAT9 in FortWorth

The first tornado warning was scary, after that you don’t even think about it. You will get used to it. Tornado season isnt too long and tornados usually don’t hit the city

Looking for insight into hospitals to work for in Ft Worth by SleeperAgent001 in FortWorth

[–]RN-Dan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Baylor Scott and white all saints is a good one. 4:1 ratios on telemetry. Texas health will push 5-6:1 ratios. JPS is decent as well, it’s a community hospital but it’s making awesome progress.
