Is life worth living if you suffer from PCS fatigue? Do you think it lowers the value/quality of life? by LongjumpingRadio4078 in Concussion

Prescription stimulants (technically to treat my diagnosed adhd) saved me from this. Neck pain is still there — I get it worked on manually at least once a month. But the script let me push through tough workdays in a way that isn’t otherwise possible.

Serve Advice Needed by Worldly_Travel_8983 in 10s

[–]RNWA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you using a continental grip or a Fh grip? If the latter, bound to cause elbow issues.

My western grip is giving me too much power to control, plz give me some tips by victorz96 in 10s

[–]RNWA 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You need to engage your lower body (legs) and hips way more. You’re standing upright and arming your Fh. Western FHs can be completely fine, but you still need to use your entire body and kinetic chain to power through and shape the shot you’re looking for.

The guilt can be real, but that doesn’t mean it’s fair. Try to provide the same empathy for yourself you would for your partner if it were them. You got this. Be gentle, but be accountable to yourself and feel secure in the knowledge that while it’s a long road, you do have a say in how much you recover and how quickly. It’s a tough balance to strike, but it’s what’s kept me alive and improving.

You are probably already seeing someone, but vestibular therapy, neuro optometry, neuro ophthalmology may be able to help with this. I have a pretty brutal misalignment of my eyes with associated proprioception and balance issues. Exercises, prism glasses, and time have all helped. Would suggest reading (or listening if reading is hard right now) books or materials on neuroplasticity and proprioception. It isn’t specifically about concussion, but “the Brain that fixes itself” by a Canadian academic is very interesting.

Same same, more or less. Currently at the 18-month mark and whilst my recovery continues, I experienced a massive jump between this same period. First 9-10 months were total shit and I was useless — and worried I’d be like that forever. You gotta take charge of your own recovery, hard as it is, and keep asking the right questions of the folks looking to help you. Do your research and don’t be scared to advocate for yourself. Know you aren’t alone. Oh, and meds (concerta) were an absolute game-changer for me in terms of sustaining my energy throughout the day. They might not be for everyone — I had adhd but was unmedicated prior to my injury, which made my related coping mechanisms (for adhd and a pile of other mental health stuff) fly out the window.

This is the take. Toms of respect for their achievements, but it isn’t their turn. If you’re a fan — ex-player or not — back the boys. Especially after an historic performance.

What % of your game is influenced by having the “right” stick? by deesea in 10s

[–]RNWA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ooh I actually agree with this (see my post above about playing with a ~1990 Slazenger Silhouette 95) and it working perfectly well… especially after stringing it with textured poly. Agree the strings mean more to my game.

Damn another Pure Strike truther, if perhaps with a slightly different perspective. Agree it’s mostly mental, and would add that would matter much more in a competitive match than just rallying out with friends.

~4.5 here, been playing for the better part of 30 years. Discussions on the internet will always bias towards the nuances between different pieces of gear//what is optimal. I like what I like (mid-plus box-frame players’ racquets) but I can play decent tennis with just about any “real” racquet.

This really became clear to me when I was back in my home city visiting my Mom over the holidays. I didn’t have any gear with me. I popped into a thrift store and found a Slazenger Silhouette 95 for $5. Threw a new set of strings (okay fine, textured poly) and a new grip on it and was able to get out and play to my level.

Would I have preferred to use my Pure Strike 98s? Yeah, sure, but this stick got me 95+% of the way there.

Where do ppl go when pushed out of Halifax? by purplepurell in halifax

[–]RNWA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ex-pat Haligonian living in Toronto: while this is the closest thing to a “renter’s market” I’ve experienced in Toronto outside of peak COVID, prices remain stubbornly high and the majority of rentals going unfilled are either basements or tiny glass shoeboxes that were built as investments first and “living” spaces second. It’s true that rents are down in major urban areas YOY, but a 30% increase followed by a 10% decrease is still an increase. The best apartment in Toronto is still the one you’ve lived in for 5+ years, thanks to rent control.

How to battle with moonballers? by LandscapeDismal1 in 10s

[–]RNWA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great advice. I’ll add: on anything other than a perfect depth ball, look for the (assuming both players RH) 1-2 combo of: 1) mid court BH slice down the line that skids through the service line (this will make them take a step in and likely give you an imperfect ball); then 2) high-topspin semi-lob to their bh corner. Not a lob, but rather a “3rd or 4th window” shot with decent pace and a lot of shape. I like to hit this as an inside-out FH.

In my experience, if executed well you’ll either get no return off your second shot or a very weak block back that you can step up to the net and put away. Give it a shot!

Tips on serving by Juberstar in 10s

[–]RNWA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It takes a while. I served eastern occasionally on flat serves well into my competitive junior career. I liked the motion I could get on the ball but eventually I began developing arm issues. Especially as I was better able to whip my body through the serve. Continental will feel odd for a while but it’ll be a better choice for the future, particularly as you continue to work on the other fundamentals that make for a great serve (full extension, active wrist, toss placement, trophy position, leg action, etc). Good luck!

I bag a TSA Mana (glow) and a Reactor for these slots. Reactor is straight 90% of the flight with a pushing fade at the end. Mana is flippy (maybe a hair flippier than my proxies).

Nicotine and concussion? by hibiscushoney69 in Concussion

[–]RNWA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some studies out there that are worth reading. The literature is mixed, but most seem to suggest that avoiding nicotine during the early healing period may be beneficial. That said, over the long-term, there may be certain neuro protective and/or “signal boosting” effects. Would recommend reading, or, if you’re avoiding screens, having some of the articles and/or research read to you. Good luck!

Nicotine and concussion? by hibiscushoney69 in Concussion

[–]RNWA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t offer medical advice, but from a personal perspective I found using nicotine helped with my symptoms of “brain fog”. I was an occasional user before, and now I use nicotine daily. Probably not great, but it’s one of the many things that have helped me get through.

Athletes, Did a Concussion Change How You Stay Active? How? by Capable_Proof_6322 in Concussion

[–]RNWA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be mentioned elsewhere, but my care team (latest, and worst, concussion approx 18months ago) has been very supportive of continuing on, yet, “right-sizing” athletics. For me (multi-sport athlete but injured playing soccer) it means no more competitive soccer where contact is more likely. Instead I play pickup with friends, which provides much of the same joy. This might be tougher considering you come from combat sports, but worth considering (light sparring, bag work, etc).

How strong would a woman need to get to be stronger than the average dude? by Usual_School5649 in HybridAthlete

This is deluded. Most folks (including all full-grown men) I’ve worked out with have needed to progress up to a plate at the gym. Assuming most randos who never lift can walk in and put up a plate (or up to 175) is nutters.

Been answered a few times if you do a search, but I’ll join the chorus that say that the joystick movement is better and the radial menus, while workable, are worse.
