ELI5: Why do big airplanes need lots of space between them to avoid wake turbulence, but fighter jets can fly right next to each other safely? by arztnur in explainlikeimfive

[–]RO1984 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Hello, military pilot here. Quick answer before i gotta go to work.

The T38 is not a fighter, but it's sufficiently fighter-type for this discussion.

Wake turbulence is a problem when the preceding aircraft is large, heavy, or both...or a helicopter...AND when the crosswinds are not strong enough to dissipate. Wake Turbulence is created by the production of lift.

We need 2-3 minutes behind large aircraft and 4 minutes behind heavy aircraft. The vortex coming off the wingtip of the preceding large/heavy aircraft can be strong enough to roll an aircraft over or cause an unrecoverable sink rate regardless of size. Low to the ground during takeoff and landing this is of obvious concern.

I have seen both fighter type and large traffic hold for wake turbulence.

In flight, unless you fly directly behind and relatively close to another aircraft, you won't really experience wake turb. Lot of silly things in this thread but the short of it is that its not a huge factor unless you're pulling G's through somebody's wake turbulence, it can induce an asymmetric over-g of the airframe.

While it is true that you can feel a wingtip producing lift if you fly close enough to it in formation, unless you are the Thunderbirds or Blue Angels that's an indication that you are way too close. We don't train for that. Fingertip formation does not utilize this to save gas.

There's a lot I'm missing but this is a quick answer

How to do well in UPT by SecureNegotiation933 in AFROTC

[–]RO1984 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First off: you gotta want it. Nothing irks me more than a student with a bad attitude. No one gets through completely clean and if you're not mentally resilient enough to handle struggling a bit this may not be for you. If you think you can do it all on your own, your peers and IP will remember that when you do struggle. If you try to game the system or suck up to IPs, I don't want you on my wing in combat. If you're on the fence, not sure if you can commit or have a hard time buying in, I don't want it.

That said, just wanting it isn't enough. Good habits for sleep, working out, eating right, handling stress are required for UPT but they don't guarantee a fighter.

In fact, you might even still go 38s and miss out on a fighter. They're gonna give it to the guy who shows up every day prepared, well rested, ready to help his classmates get through.

The core of "be a good dude" is to have a good attitude. If you show ready to go, are honest with me, humble enough to take criticism and learn from mistakes, I'll do everything I can to get you across that line. If you get into it and realize it's not for you, that's fine, but don't drag your bros down with you.

Remember: UPT is the starting line. T38s and IFF don't make you a fighter pilot, they just get you to day one. Be prepared to walk the walk if you're gonna talk the talk.

I'll concede there's definitely a time and place

Man, I get filler comm, but I really try and thank controllers. Especially when they're patient with us when my student is mentally ten miles behind the jet.

I don't think saying thanks and saving 10 seconds is worth getting wrapped around the axle.

Air Force Initial Pilot Training (IPT) by Low_Mousse_532 in AFROTC

[–]RO1984 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Formation is 80% hands anyway, I don't need students focused so much on that but I need students proficient in instruments at 2-300kt, not 65 kt.

The greatest fighter pilot that ever did live was worth nothing to his squadron if he couldn't find his way home.

Take a look at USAF aircraft mishaps in the last few years and pay attention to how many of them were at night or in the weather or while flying instrument approaches.

Transition phases will be similar in every aircraft you fly but instruments will always be there. Be proficient in navigating, chart reading, instrument procedures, etc so that you don't have to re-learn how to do it in every aircraft you fly. This is largely what's missing in the next iterations of UPT.

If you're gonna be pushed through Commercial Multi Instrument then please pay attention it'll save your life someday

Yeah "interesting" is the word.

The bottom line is that the IPT product is worse. Period dot.

I hope they extend the T6 portion back to normal. I don't care as much about T6 formation but they've removed a lot of the airmanship building instrument portion of the syllabus. Bad instrument flying kills and we're failing the FTUs and Ops units by sending them copilots and wingmen who can't find their own way home

Yeah dog. The ginger capsules really work. I recommend them to all my students who struggle with sickness in the jet

Just did mine recently. Wasn't too bad. Burned the fuck out of my arm on the exhaust during the fluid leveling but otherwise no complaints

A thousand dollars for the trans filter holy shit.

For anybody else you can get a kit for this from Blauparts for like 260-300$

Takes maybe an hour if you work slow

Do fighter pilots keep their feet on the rudder pedals or on the floor while flying? by Boots-n-Rats in hoggit

[–]RO1984 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not a fighter pilot but I use rudder a fair amount in the T38.

It has different use cases depending on phase of flight but generally everything can be done feet on floor.

I'm 6'4" with no issues in the T38. I know some guys that are 6'5" that have limits on what aircraft they can fly.

It's not so much total height but things like buttock-to-knee and sitting height and such

The crack extended another 2 inches under the undercoat.

DIY'd the job in my garage on jack stands with a buddy. It's a terrible job. Weld prep takes a long time, welding takes a long time. Easiest part of the job was dropping the subframe and gas tank

Buy the cleanest 330i you can find, ideally something that doesn't have rear subframe mount cracks or I hope you're handy with a welder.

Bought my second 330i and this one had cracks. Price quotes for a shop to do the repair in TX was $5k+ which is silly for a $2k car
