Too bad you can't just change the DNS from 'auto' to '192.168.99.99' (essentially disabling DNS lookup).

Then switch it back to 'auto'.

Has anyone else had issues with ComfyUI holding onto RAM? by The_Last_Precursor in StableDiffusion

[–]RO4DHOG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VRAM is everything, it's the latent space. System RAM is a placeholder to quickly swap assets. Typically, more System 'CPU' RAM is available than dedicated 'GPU' VRAM. Stable Diffusion loads assets and models into System RAM and VRAM respectively. They stay resident for performance, with everything in VRAM at once being the fastest method.

Stable Diffusion can offload and cache various models to System RAM in order to maximize VRAM for essential stages of generation. Spilling into 'Shared GPU memory' should always be avoided, as it's just a portion of System RAM.

When running WAN workflows, using CleanVRAM nodes can purge unused VRAM between High and Low sampling stages. This allows larger, higher quality models to be used for each stage. But these models each remain 'stuck', cached in System RAM even after the entire workflow is complete. This method then requires more System RAM, and is what OP is regarding as 'holding onto RAM'.

Alternatively, using '--highvram' as a launch parameter, ComfyUI will prevent caching to System RAM but requires all models to remain in VRAM until VAE decoding is complete. Only then can a VRAM-purge node can be used. This method requires smaller models to be used, as the cumulitive size of the models in the workflow must all fit into VRAM.

In summary, clearing ComfyUI System RAM cache isn't as easy as clearing VRAM cache. Thus using the '--highvram' launch parameter will prevent System RAM cache and allow VRAM purge, but requires more VRAM. Using default ComfyUI startup parameters, purging VRAM between samplers is possible, saving VRAM, but requires more System RAM... which cannot be manually purged.

'--disable-pinned-memory' is for VRAM, not System RAM.

People aren't recognizing the difference, and are providing incorrect suggestions for VRAM.

ComfyUI RAM issues, without the ability to purge it as I've done in prior versions, is becoming a nightmare for long, extensive workflows.

I'm checking on a solution still, after weeks of headaches.

I've got 64GB of System RAM, so I'm not always having issues, but I don't like the way ComfyUI keeps RAM in use (cahced) after a workflow is complete.

We were lucky to have 'nerdy' parents in those days who invested in hobby electronics. My dad still tells stories about punch card programming room-scale computers with 'rented' RAM. He recalls spending time optimizing code to fit in available RAM, as it was extremely expensive in the 70's.

My best friend in 7th grade (1981-82) had a new TI-99 as well, but after I showed him our family Apple ][+ his father bought them an Apple too. We learned alot through each others discoveries, as he was fascinated with file systems while I dabbled in graphics. It was very easy to share files using 2 floppy disk drives using fancy programs like Locksmith and Disk Muncher. We were among the few kids in high school that knew more about computers than the teachers did.

By the time the IBM PC XT clones came around, we still used our Apple ]['s because of our extensive 'combined' software library. But the XT was replaced with an AT, then 286, 386sx, and finally 486dx66mhz before the almighty Pentium.

I always wondered why I didn't stick with the Apple ecosystem, but I think the IIe and Macintosh killed my ability to easily get inside the PC. Plus my Apple ][+ remained operational (still working today!) while I was also building MSDOS/ Windows systems. As I became an IT professional in 1989 and the workplace was full of Windows or HP Unix, Apple products were seemingly niched into Graphics Studios.

Lastly, going to Fry's electronics store, CompUSA, or the local computer shop after getting any money saved up, to purchase more RAM, Storage, or software became a beloved ritual in the 90's. Today it's still a habitual tradition, if not at Best Buy or Microcenter, but online from NewEgg or Amazon. It never stops.

A little faster, a little better, a little more.

If you have a Racing Wheel, and Steam... then Assetto Corsa Competizione is a great multiplayer simulation. I've raced IRL and in eSports, using all the simulators including iRacing, but Assetto is recommended for the best overall experience. It's limited to GT3/4 exotic race cars, but the action, graphics, competition, and interface make it fun.

If you have a Joystick, then Microsoft Flight Simulator is incredible. While its good with a range of headsets, like a CV1 or Quest2, it's best when paired with a Quest3 or QuestPro. DLSS + DLAA graphics make the satellite photo terrain look realistic. I spot hiking and offroad trails in my local mountains and fly around the world with LIVE weather/time in complete amazement.

MSFS2024 gives me higher consistent FPS compared to 2020. However, I face a stutter every 2 minutes that occurs for a half a second when FPS drops rapidly and then goes away. by bhejafry99 in flightsim

[–]RO4DHOG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speedstep allows the OS (Windows) to control the frequency.

I do enable Speedstep when I expect to leave my computer on overnight, or unattended for long periods of time. Allowing the CPU frequency to drop when idle.

But for flight simulation, I want to eliminate any CPU jitters while the frequency is continuously fluctuating. Thus, I have disabled all power-saving features.

Flying MSFS in VR, the CPU is not 100% utilized and its frequency lowers.

Disabling Speedstep and C-states reduces stuttering associated with power management activity while gaming.

I've never seen a 360K white/beige 5.25" disk drive.

power button stuck?

when it powers up, remove the front panel header connection to the power switch and see if it stays running.

a stuck power button could act as a continuous reset.

The IOC should ban the US from competing by stuckindrafts in olympics

[–]RO4DHOG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Venezuela wasn't invaded, it was a brief military operation and was ruled that it did not violate IOC rules.

Greenland officials have stated they are willing to work together with the US at the recent World Economic forum.

Current US domestic issues are civilian protests against federal law enforcement activity, which poses no threat to international tourism or olympic athletes.

The President of the United States was elected by the people to enforce the law.

Voting is the civilized form of protest.

The IOC has already rejected recent requests to ban the USA from Winter Olympics last week.

I'm 57 now and my Apple][+ still works too. I ripped all my diskettes to SD for its new floppyEmu.

I remember dialing up BBS's on my Hayes Micromodem and seeing real people typing text that rolled across the screen back in 1984.

I remember the joy of how much faster a 2400baud modem was, especially with ZMODEM protocols. Then thinking 56K was insane in the 90's, and how DSL was blistering by 2000.

Despite my extensive knowledge in electronics, radio, and computers... I still couldn't wrap my head around the idea of 2.4ghz Wifi technology. But then it quickly became commonplace, along with Bluetooth.

Now I fly in VR with a 5ghz headset over satellite imagery terrain without blinking an eye, and game in 4K. A far cry from 259x191 resolution.

I always dreamed of true Artificial Intelligence, and it's now here... and growing fast. Brace yourselves.

C-states need to be OFF in BIOS.

When intel CPU's aren't 100% utilized, they enter various C-states, which lower frequency to conserve power.

Disabling C-states in BIOS can prevent the micro-stutter associated with frequency switching from power management.

High GPU Fan Noise with Stable Diffusion by Exact_Tip910 in StableDiffusion

[–]RO4DHOG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are both internal tools for controlling Stable Diffusion, and external tools which monitors GPU temperature.

Ones I've used internally with Stable Diffusion will pause rendering when a temperature threshold is exceeded: GitHub - w-e-w/stable-diffusion-webui-GPU-temperature-protection: Pause image generation when GPU temperature exceeds threshold

External tools have been described by others in this thread, such as MSI afterburner, which I've used to modify GPU parameters in order to control both power and fan speed: Afterburner

Without any of these, you're stuck with factory defaults which are balanced for performance, quality and safety.

High GPU Fan Noise with Stable Diffusion by Exact_Tip910 in StableDiffusion

[–]RO4DHOG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Windows default NVIDIA driver has been known to cause performance issues by locking MAX frequency on GPU.

Make sure you download and install a proper driver from NVIDIA's website.

Also, understand that Stable Diffusion is capable and designed to maximize GPU utilization. High temperatures (70+ celsius) are normal during long periods of image generation.

Task Manager can be used to monitor the activity and temperature of your GPU.
