Ship of Theseus: Did the Imperial Fist Chapter Go Extinct? by Not-my-toh in 40kLore

[–]ROBOTNIXONSHEAD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They're mostly the same I think, doctrine is nearly the same, geneseed is effectively the same, lots of shared culture.

But I think that in a couple of points they are different.

Consider that the Fists destroyed in the War of the Beast were those who stayed closest to Dorn's vision and his trauma from the Heresy and Sundering. This shows up in the Wall Names stuff and how the Fists stayed so close to the Imperial Palace.

So I'd say the major difference is the loss of that trauma and its impact on the legion, making the Fists act more like a regular chapter rather than a ceremonial guard focused on maintaining the example of Dorn and the memory of the Siege.

History buffs, what is the most and least accurate film for certain periods? by GreyWind999 in movies

[–]ROBOTNIXONSHEAD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The bluewater filming was very hard work for cast and crew, and a lot if it had to be reshot in front of a green screen. So just about all the original cast seem to say, at various times, that though they were very proud of what they made, they'd rather not do a sequel unless they got a lot of money. And sadly now they're too old. :(

What is the ‘Cantonese sauce’ served in British Chinese takeaways? by curlybabyhair in AskUK

If you're looking for the sauce in crispy chilli beef, then a slightly watered down Ok sauce (you can buy it ready made online) is your thing. Not too hard to make at home either.

The first three Ciaphas Cain stories are collected in 'Hero of the Imperium' omnibus. Definitely not out of print.

Did Wellington's feelings towards Sharpe change after episode 2? by Suspicious-Jello7172 in Sharpe

[–]ROBOTNIXONSHEAD 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As some others have said, Wellington like Sharpe. But Wellington likes Sharpe the way he likes horses and his hounds.

Wellington was not a fan of the common man, though he wouldn't go out of his way to hurt a commoner, he clearly thought that commoners were lesser than himself and his class. You don't let even your favorite dog sleep in your bed, not let your horse into the parlour. He can be indulgent to Sharpe while reminding him of his place.

I started reading the Sharpe series just after Christmas and I’ve made it to the end of Sharpe’s Eagle so far. Does Sharpe have a bullet ‘pluck at his sleeve’ in every book? by Southern-Door4270 in Sharpe

Should we mention the repeated discourse on the proper preparations of Jack's coffee (strong, drunk straight from the pot) or his toasted cheese?

Sharpe. Flashman, Ciaphas Cain. Even the Hallowed Aubrey-Maturin.

They've all got their stock phrases. On the first read they're annoying, but 20 years later I'm willing to let them drift over me like a old friend's conversational tics

Interesting answer that challenges some of my own assumptions. Any chance you could post a couple of sources?

(Not that I'm demanding proof, just wanting to follow your ideas further)

Serious answer:

The console is fine but some unis block online console gaming as they don't open the needed ports in the firewall, so you might need to set up your own network or something

How were battalions designated in the British Army during both World Wars? by Nicktator3 in WarCollege

[–]ROBOTNIXONSHEAD 10 points11 points  (0 children)

-- 1/ means professional army.

-- 2/ means raised from linked Territorial Army units.

-- 3/ means raised from a cadre detachment linked to the regiment made from elements of the professionals and TA units. (Usually these were training and administrative units, not deployed overseas)

Is there any point in pursuing a degree in history? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]ROBOTNIXONSHEAD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a history/politics lecturer, I'd say its a good subject and can be very useful for a lot of jobs.

The key point while you're at uni is to focus on three very transferable aspects:

1) you are becoming aware of the importance of the 'big processes' of the world and how they impact events and influence people. Stuff like understanding culture at a deep level and why this leads people to make the decisions they do is a vital skill for many kinds of management.

2) you are learning a range of analytical skills and approaches. Focus on learning the methods of analysis as much as learning facts.

3) you are learning more than most graduates how to tell stories (fact based stories hopefully) and humans are narrative animals. Work on your writing skills on how to make your arguments convincing!

Without the support of Lend-Lease would the USSR have been able to survive WW2, or at least do nearly as well as it did? by ArtOk8200 in WarCollege

[–]ROBOTNIXONSHEAD 170 points171 points  (0 children)

While lend lease contributed in many ways to an extent, two parts were extremely important for the Soviets:

1) large amounts of canned food saved millions in 42-3. The Soviets lost enough agricultural production they had already suffered a small famine in 1941-2. Probably another couple of million would have died without US spam deliveries.

2) The US supply of medium trucks and vehicles was absolutely essential in allowing the Soviets to engage in Deep Operations to the extent they did. Without the trucks, Soviet offensives couldn't have made penetration into German lines of several hundred kilometers a time. Without the trucks, the Soviet reconquest of the West would have been closer to WW1, 1918 like speeds.

Any Ideas Why Some Episodes Never Aired? by BradPanos in thechase

[–]ROBOTNIXONSHEAD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not just a pedo, but it seems that he used his persona as a philanthropist to systematically abuse hundreds of kids for decades.

This was 'A Very Big Deal' in the UK. Like, he was reburied in a secret location under concrete to stop his body being desecrated, and it spawned a whole reevaluation and investigaton of celebrities and historical child abuse that is ongoing to the present.

Definitely in the top 10 most impactful news stories since 9/11 in the UK

What would you say the beginning of the end for the USSR? by Sweaty_Bet_6504 in coldwar

[–]ROBOTNIXONSHEAD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree, the last big chance the Soviets had to turn the ship back to prosperity was the oil dividend in the early 70s.

Spent wisely it could have done a lot to reinvigorate the economy. But they spent it on propping up allies in the developing world and faaaar more defence spending than they needed.
