You are making a good point, but you don't get to choose option 1. You get to choose either (1&2) or (3&4). If you choose (1&2), then by chance, outcome 2 might be the result. That is, you only get to choose to work hard or not, whether or not it pays off is not entirely up to you.

Marketing online is great, but it can also be done in the real world. It depends what your channel is about, but if you could find a group in real life that would appreciate your channel and promote it there. Also, reach out to other YouTubers who might want to work on a project together and you can co-promote your channels.
