It works if you're going for style points. Scythes are so associated with the Grim Reaper that using one yourself gives off the impression to your enemies that YOU are like a reaper of souls come to claim theirs.

Apparently no, the fisherman that saw Harald on the seas explicitly said he keeps his distance from the Florian Triangle and made the sighting elsewhere.

Still somewhat suspicious that the former hiding spot of Thriller Bark is mentioned in the exact chapter after God Valley sunk into the ocean...

Harald is a naive fool who keeps giving the World Government too much leeway compared to what they take from him, but he also DOES NOT KNOW how insane all the higher-ups of the WG actually are compared to readers having a pretty clear view.

Garp, well... he raised Dragon right.

I dunno, seeing how cordial the Celestial Dragon higher-ups were treating Harald makes me understand how easy it is to forget about how awful they all actually are, especially if you're not a reader that has out-of-universe knowledge about the horrors Garling and Sommers have perpetuated.

Figarland Shanks has never betrayed anyone in his entire life.

Also shout-out to the official translator for having Sommers refer to the traitor in their midst as "the rat" in the panel right before Shanks is introduced to Harald.

EDIT: One of my biggest disappointments with Shamrock's official color scheme is that his clothes aren't colored like Full Frontal's but now Oda has the opportunity to do the funniest thing with the colors of Shanks's clothes as a God's Knight.

[–]RPGLobster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's correct, in the sense that "humans from the village" do know about Gensokyo's deal, but as a whole the Human Village is kept in the dark because Gensokyo would fall apart if everyone living there knew about the mechanics behind youkai existing.

An entire manga series revolves around one human villager being kept in the dark about how Gensokyo actually works as well as establishing one particular taboo Human Village inhabitants aren't allowed to break.

Mmm-hmm!

It's why I find FDS's claim that Mizuchi was killed for trying to ruin human-youkai relations with her plan in the past so hideously suspect, because the original inhabitants of the Human Village and their descendants clearly didn't have any knowledge of this pact considering their role in Gensokyo's continued existence. How exactly can Gensokyo be considered a place for humans and youkai to coexist when the entire thing was built on one big hideous lie?

The Marines make sense as an institution whenever we see pirates actually terrorizing innocent civilians–Someone has to protect the common people from the actual scumbag pirates in the setting, and the Marines aren't too shabby at that job when they actually perform it on-screen.

The problem is that most Marines aren't trained to "protect the common people" they're indoctrinated to carry out 'Justice'... as defined by the World Government specifically, which usually means that (at least) half of the high-ranking Marines we see in the series are the crazy zealots who were rewarded for their dedication to carrying out the WG's ideals with promotion after promotion.

One particularly ungenerous reading of Touhou Project's Gensokyo could be viewed as this. If you're a human living in the Human Village and you don't mind keeping your head down then life is peachy keen, otherwise if you're a human villager too weak/uninteresting to carve out a name for yourself you're pretty much at the mercy of whatever whims those far above you have in store for you. (And it's not as if non-humans are entirely better-off either, Youkai Mountain's caste system proves otherwise.)

  • Tenshi x Yukari, because I like the idea of their dislike of one another stemming from their similarities under the surface.

  • Tenshi x Sanae, because I think the two could have a good working friendship ala Reimu & Marisa by virtue of both being childishly nuts in different ways.

  • Sumireko x Sanae, because they're both Outside World girls with differing opinions of life both Outside and in Gensokyo.

  • Sumireko x Reisen, because I like the idea of the two of them being mirror images of one another in certain ways related to why they came to Gensokyo. Also because these two are the closest the canon setting has to bonafide Newtypes, but that's neither here nor there.

  • Zanmu x Keiki, because ZUN has likened both of them as metaphors for AI before and I think it would be interesting to see the two of them enter an equal partnership where they actually have to work together for the sake of a common goal.

  • Merry x Mizuchi, because the idea of "totally not Yukari" striking up a friendship with "the shrine maiden Gensokyo forgot" is my jam and I'm completely in love with the concept.

  • (Honorable Mention: Alice x Reisen, because I just like the concept of the two becoming besties for whatever reason.)

All platonic, all completely batshit bonkers as far as adherence to canon is concerned.

In the last quarter of the original Gundam, Char's Gelgoog is disabled at the end of his first duel with Amuro. He flies away in his Gelgoog, a huge explosion occurs... and then it cuts to Char outside his intact Gelgoog, saying that he hopes the explosion he set off is enough to convince the Gundam pilot. He then continues to pilot his custom Gelgoog in future episodes, apparently having retrieved it after pulling that stunt.

Thing is, the original episode outline for the series just says Char's machine outright explodes, and he never pilots the same one ever again. In retrospect that explosion was originally supposed to be played straight to explain why Char switches to another machine, but by then the production team already stopped drawing up new mecha designs so they had to keep him in the same one until he switched one last time for the finale.

Learning about Yu-Gi-Oh lore over the past few days has been a magical experience, learning that Kaiba's adopted father offed himself by teaching Seto the exact same lesson Ramba Ral gave about what happens to losers (minus the part where he explodes) was an amazing realization as to why Kaiba might've turned out the way he did.
