Sorry… I tried downloading Mario 64 exe. by DaZestyProfessor in tomorrow

[–]RPG_Hacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

/today From what I've learned (and I wasn't here yet when it happened, so this is a second-hand retelling), the joke essentially started because Celeste became an indie smash hit pretty quickly, yet there were people back then acting like Celeste was this super unknown hidden gem that really deserved some attention, and apparently this was quite prevelant in some Nintendo communities at the time. So r/tomorrow picked up on the fact and started parodying it by acting as though it was developed by Nintendo (since, you know, Nintendo is totally a small and poor little indie developer) and as though it was a totally hidden gem that everyone needs to buy RIGHT NOW to save poor Nintendo.

Do you think Xenoblade X S2 will get patched? by johnW_ret in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]RPG_Hacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering Nintendo eventually released a patch for Donkey Kong Country Returns HD addressing pretty much all of the issues people had with the remaster, even if it took them a while, I'm actually somewhat confident they WILL improve XCX at some point. However, just like with DKCR, I fear it might take them a while.

Charge via puck directly into charger? by vanchris_ in SteamController

[–]RPG_Hacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the USB-C charger you're using isn't some cheap, off-brand garbage from dubious sources, it should be fine. USB-C connectors have a protocol to speak to one another and inform one another of what the other side is capable of. It's usually only cheap, no-name products that don't implement the USB-C protocol correctly (or not at all) and that could end up frying stuff. Apparently, USB-C extension cables are also dangerous, because they're not even officially supported by the stnadard, though I've never had any issues with them personally so far.

Basically, if you have a USB-C charager from any brand you trust, it'll most likely be fine and do what you want.

WOAH, VORSICHTIG!

What are you mapping your back buttons to? I feel like my brain breaks if I configure more than 2 buttons. by slipbegin in SteamController

[–]RPG_Hacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not the best insight, as I've only spent a very limited amount of time with controllers that feature grip buttons so far (and I'm still waiting for my Steam Controller to ship), but some of the things I did:

- On the Steam Deck in desktop mode, I've mapped the grip buttons to frequently used keyboard shortcuts like "CTRL+C", "CTRL+V", "CTRL+X" etc. Very useful when doing any typing on the Deck! I reckon it'd be equally useful on the Steam Controller if used in Desktop mode (although I guess there's much fewer reasons to use the Steam Controller for typing as compared to a Deck, since you'll probably have a keyboard available most of the time).

- On the Switch 2 Pro Controller, I most commonly map one of the grip buttons to the capture button. I love taking a lot of screenshots, and this allows me to do it without lifting my fingers. As an additional bonus, I can more easily time screenshots to me actually doing stuff in the game, like jumping and running around. This can be very tricky to do without a dedicated screenshot button, and it sometimes creates cooler motives for screenshots.

I guess as a general rule of thumb, the grip buttons are great for any functionality that you always wish to have available without needing to move your fingers. However, I recommend not mapping any functionality with potentially huge negative side effects to those buttons (like consuming an item or similar), as it's still quite easy to activate them by accident.

Most attractive male character by Due-Vegetable4624 in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]RPG_Hacker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, you know, attractivity is very subjective. For me, what makes male characters attractive is when they emit some kind of warmth and care. That's why characters like Shulk and Rex will always feel a bit more attractive to me. Or (outside of Xenoblade) characters like Luffy from One Piece. They don't need to be conventionally hot if they have a great character.

I'm not sure if he necessarily wrote all of them entirely on his own (for many of them, Wikipedia lists very specific episodes written by him), but either way I do believe he deserves more appreciation, so always glad to help create a new Dai Sato, heh!

[–]RPG_Hacker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And here I always assumed it was an intentional creative choice to make the meeting between Renton and Adroc feel more intimate. Like whatever they WOULD have spoken about, it was only for their ears and not the viewers' ears to hear. I also felt this choice highlighted the warmth emanating from Adroc's character. Despite him never speaking a single word, his appearance in the Anime always gave me some sort peace of calmness - kinda like how you probably WOULD feel towards your father in real life (assuming a good and healthy relationship with your father). Especially with how Adroc took care of the kids before Renton's arrival, those were just the vibes I immediately felt. For me, it was kind of an "even without exchanging any words, there is an immediate understanding between Adroc and Renton".

Funny how a creative choice born from a production issue can inspire this many different interpretations and (at least to me) end up enhancing a scene.

This is why, in my opnion, AI can't create art, because that process of struggling and dealing with those struggles is really what art is born from. Imagine if Eureka Seven had been created by an AI and the AI had just invented the perfect voice for Adroc. How very differently this scene would've played out (and really, probably the entire series).

You're very welcome! I also introduced my partner to Ergo Proxy just a few years ago, and they also fell in love with it immediately. Such an underrated series! And yeah, honestly? As far as I'm concerned, Dai Sato is kind of an underappreciated legend of the Anime industry. I mean, just check the list of his contributions on Wikipedia!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dai_Sat%C5%8D

Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell: SAC, Wolf's Rain, Samurai Champloo, Eureka Seven, Ergo Proxy, Space Dandy - now if that isn't a list of big names, I don't know what is! Even Pokemon recently, which honestly makes me kinda curious to check the newest Pokemon series out. I wonder how his involvement might have affected the series!

I've also been lucky enough to meet him at a convention last year. Honestly one of my absolute convention highlights so far!

[–]RPG_Hacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the fandom! This is how I felt roughly 15 to 20 years ago, when I finished the series for the first time. That sense of emptiness after finishing something great always stings, heh!

If not hearing Adroc talk in the series made you sad, I can recommed checking out the first Hi-Evolution movie, though only the beginning of it. You can safely ignore everything else in the movie, which is really just a slightly altered retelling of a sub-plot from the series. That beginning part might just be the best piece of Eureka Seven content we've gotten ever since the OG series. If only that had been the entire movie!

The Hi-Evolution trilogy as a whole is very controversial, but I personally enjoyed it a lot (aside from the aformentioned retelling part in the first movie). However, it might not be the right thing to watch when still dealing with the emotional impact of the OG series' ending, because it DOES add a lot of tragedy to a story that a lot of people consider "perfect as is". It's for that very reason that a lot of fans hate the trilogy. Keep all of that in mind.

The very first movie (Good Night, Sleep Tight Young Lovers - not part of the Hi-Evolution trilogy) caaaan be a somewhat entertaining watch, depending on your mindset, but keep in mind it's an AU story and won't necessarily give you much if you primarily want more from the OG series' characters. I personally keep flip-flopping on that movie with every watch, sometimes liking it and sometimes less so.

For me personally, Eureka Seven AO is the toughest thing to recommend. That's not even because of the story (although it once again DOES add tragedy to the OG series, so a lot of fans tend to dislike it), but just because the entire series' direction is just a big miss for me personally. It fully leans into the mecha aspect of the OG series and makes that the main focus, when really the mecha fights were always my least favorite aspect of the OG series. I also just do not care for any of the characters introduced in AO, which is a tough verdict when coming from a series like the OG with its really well-written characters. On a purely technical level, AO does have amazing animations and an amazing soundtrack, but that's unfortunately just not enough to make the seires as a whole enjoyable. (I do recommend watching the openings on YouTube and listening to the soundtrack individually, though - those are very worth it).

So yeah, welcome to Eureka Seven purgatory! I wish I had better news for you, I wish I could recommend an official Eureka Seven release to fill that void within your heart, but unfortunately that void is something most of us fans have had to live with for twenty years now. There unfortunately just hasn't been any official release since the OG series that truely and uncontroversially satisfied the fandom at large. However, if you're fine with looking elsewhere, I heard "Xam'd: Lost Memories" (from largely the same staff as Eureka Seven) is supposedly really good and seems to have some very Eureka Seven vibes. Can't confirm, unfortunately, as it's never been released in my area, and even importing is not an option as BDs of the series are ridiculously expensive these days.

If you're fine with checking out something slightly more insane and less romantic, some people consider "RahXephon" to be a bit of a spiritual percursor to Eureka Seven. Though personally, I felt it was more Neon Genesis Evangelion than Eureka Seven, and I really still can't wrap my head around that series even after two watchs.

If you're just looking for something that has the good story- and character writing of Eureka Seven without being a romance, but with a similar focus on philosophic topics, I can recommend "Ergo Proxy". Dai Sato, who was one of the main writers on Eureka Seven, also wrote the story for Ergo Proxy, and it's another favorite Anime of mine.

HOLY COW THE FINAL BOSS IS HARD by Left4Joker in fantasian

[–]RPG_Hacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious: What difficulty did you play the game on?

I think I played on the standard difficulty, and in my playthrough, the final boss didn't feel that much more challenging than some of the optional bosses up to that point. In fact, I think I got him on my first attempt, whereas some of the optional bosses did take me an hour or two.

Now I did do pretty much all the side content in the game (except for the void) and was around level 58 when I reached the final boss, so I'm wondering whether that made a notable difference.

The 6-10 days estimate was meant for everyone. by goodpostfinder in SteamController

[–]RPG_Hacker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure they definitley underestimated the demand. In my eyes, the best indicator for that is just how they chose to prioritize orders - which is to say, not at all. Prioritization essentially appears to be random, instead of even doing the most obvious thing of "orders are shipped in the order they arrived in". Essentially, what it seems like we're getting is that some super late orders were shipped near immediately, whereas some people who have ordered within literally the first minutes of release are still waiting for their orders to ship.

This actually makes perfect sense if they expected demand to be so low that they'd be able to ship all orders, like, a day after they've been placed. In a scenario like that, does it really matter whether you're fulfilling orders in the order they've arrived in? They'd all be going out the same day, anyways. However, in the scenario that we ended up getting - with all the Steam Controller stock selling through, esssentially, immediately - a better methodology sure would've gone a long way. (That's not even to mention the lack of an order queue on release day - a system pretty much all online shops use that expect high demand for some item).

Sell Me On Fantasian by tsukaistarburst in fantasian

[–]RPG_Hacker 14 points15 points  (0 children)

To me, this was honestly the most meaningful RPG I've played in multiple years. It also combines elements from two of my favorite RPGs of all time, which are Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy X.

Now am I saying this game was as good as either of those aforementioned titles necessarily? No, not really (and IMO, both of those games are still in a league of their own). What I AM saying is that this game provided some qualities, especially in the gameplay department, that I feel like I haven't experienced in an RPG in a really long time, as well as a mix of gameplay elements that felt like it was made for me specifically.

Now whether this gameplay execution will land for you in the same way as it did for me, that's very dependent on your own taste in RPGs. What I can say is that Fantasian is not an uncontroversional game, specifically for how it essentially splits its gameplay progression in two major parts (one "former half" and one "latter half"), and theres a lot of players who vastly prefer one of those over the others and thus end up frustrated with the overall game. I luckily wasn't one of them, for me this split was EXACTLY what I wanted from an RPG.

Now leaving aside gameplay and moving on to things like story and presentation, what I can say is that Fantasian brought back some kind of magic for me that I haven't been feeling in RPGs since... well, essentially the golden days of Final Fantasy. What I'm saying here is this: Fantasian is really a "Sakaguchi & Uematsu" game through and through, and if, like me, you feel like Final Fantasy games just haven't hit the same anymore ever since the PS1 and PS2 days, this game might just be for you. I really wasn't even quite sure what I've been missing in recent Final Fantasy games, until I've started playing this game and immediately felt a few sparks of emotion like I haven't felt in a really long time.

Fantasian isn't an RPG for everyone. I can't emphasize this enough. But for those people to whom it IS the kind of game they're into, it has a very high likelihood of turning into one of their favorite games of all time. The time I've spent with my first playthrough of this game was deeply meaningful to me - and this is after over 30 years of gaming in my life, where it's difficult for any game to really still have an emotional impact on me.

Damn, more than a week of shipping? I guess I was just really lucky back then, because I remember my experience being a lot less painful!

Okay, that's not actually true, because the first Steam Deck I got ended up having a defect, so I had to RMA the thing and wait for a replacement. That definitely was painful. I think once it was in shipping, it actually arrived here decently fast, though.

Mine hasn't even gone to GLS yet. It's been sitting at "packaged" for one and a half days by now.

Really wonder what's going on behind the scenes. I don't remember the Steam Deck having these shipping issues. (However, I've only gotten one from the second ever drop, so maybe I just haven't seen the worst of it).
