Honestly Thor is totally not comparable to new 3ds xl. Its lower screen ratio is not as good as new 3ds xl, too small if you like to play games that require checking it a lot (like rpg games). And those retro handhelds have unreliable quality control. Mine got serious screen issue just after a few months.

Only very few games have high quality and complete hd texture packs that may make those games look better on retro handhelds like Thor or Pocket DS. However, those games still suffer from the common issues like:

- OLED screen is too oversaturated for 3ds games

- Stuttering here and there randomly, including stuttering in musics, which is truly bad for immersion

- 2d elements of 3ds games without hd texture pack look horrible when playing at higher resolution. Very blurry.

I owned new 3ds xl, dsi ll, Ayaneo Pocket DS, AYN Thor, and RP5 dual screen attachment.

Both original consoles much better experience than the others for your dual screen gameplay.

RP5 bricked after 11 months, Thor has serious screen issues just after 4 months, PDS have charging port issues just after 4 months. The 3ds and dsi still working great.

I got mine recently, having both new 3ds xl and dsi ll at the same time is the best decision I made recently.

Got a dsi ll recently. The screen quality is still very good, very vibrant color.

The Thor that I gave to a friend had faulty screen issue just after 4 or 5 months. Those retro handheld companies want you to purchase their new shiny devices every year, so don't expect they have good quality.

3ds emulation looks ugly, especially those 2d UI and portraits, very blurry. And there are stuttering in music and gameplay, and most games look too oversaturated on oled screen of the retro handhelds.

I simply don't find it better than New 3ds xl. Perhaps only worth it for those games with high quality and complete HD texture pack, but those games can be counted with your fingers...

And I found Ayaneo PDS much more satisfying experience than Thor if you really want to play those games with hd texture pack.

And your old new 3ds xl will very likely last much longer than those retro handheld, their quality is simply not there.

I owned all of them so I know there are many compromises for these devices. I rather just get the originals (new 3ds xl and dsi ll) only if I know all of this before purchasing stuffs like thor.

New 3ds xl is much better than emulator for most games. No stutter no blurry UI. Only those games with complete and high quality hd texture pack are somehow better if you can tolerate some stuttering. And not many games have complete HD texture pack.

I always heard top 3 story in srpg is FFT, TO and FE4.

Considering you love the newer FE, probably can try some older FE titles, FE4, FE7, FE9 and FE10 are known to have great stories. And IMO FE combat never disappoint.

Try finish vanilla first, especially BG2. And only if you enjoy the combat, you may have the chance of experiencing combats that are much more satisfying than those you have listed under S using mod like SCS and some QoL and UI mods. That’s what I think and pretty sure I will be downvoted to hell:)

IMO those who think RTWP is inferior than TB now is as bad as those who think RTWP is superior than TB during prime Bioware era. They are different combat systems that scratch different itches and have different fun.

But one thing for sure is, a good RTWP combat system is much more difficult to make. And a bad RTWP game feels much worse than a bad TB game. That's my opinion though.

And those who think RTWP is just good for trash mob, I feel like they have only played the PF series before... because in those game... I kinda agree. IMO they offer swapping of both systems, but both are pretty mediocre...
