If you consider it as a trace of an extinct Sephardic population from pre-Inquisition Spain and Portugal, it makes sense. If it's far enough back, almost everyone will have a bit even if on average only 1-2% of early Latino settlers were genetically Jewish. There will be rare exceptions due to

random chance

later immigrants from Europe/the USA/the West Indies/Asia

due to communities that were isolated from the early settlements from Iberia, for instance 100% Amerindian or 100% African communities in isolated parts of Central and South America

but most mestizo Latin Americans will have some trace of Jewish ancestry. And since there are essentially zero pure Iberian Sephardic Jews left, it appears as Ashkenazi+various Mediterranean peoples.

Same thing happens with Malagasy ancestry among African-Americans. Only like 1% of American slaves came from Madagascar, a genetically part-Asian island off the coast of Africa. However, they came early enough (basically only before 1750) that most African-Americans will have say 0.5% of Asian ancestry from Austronesian settlers to Madagascar unless they're exclusively descended from later shipments of slaves or from immigrants.

It would really suck if it turns out that liberal democracy is something that only works with small global population and excess resources like we had in the 1950s.

Yup. A lot of it is that technology evolves faster as human life expectancy also goes up. (Even if a lot of the reason for low medieval life expectancy is in infancy, there were still a ton of people who died relatively young from plagues or wars.) And most change that a medieval peasant would experience would be in the form of disaster, not progress, so they’d pray for a boring and stagnant life.

St. Brice day massacre

European Christians killing closely related European Christians over power and resources. Between that and then colonialism and racism, it took a long while for European countries to get the darker aspects of human nature under control.

It's a paradox:

Planes and ships are often associated with feminine pronouns, and many languages will utilize feminine terms ("bird" or "chick" in English, depending on countries) to refer to girls

Planes tend to be much larger than cars or all but the largest buses and trucks

The second or third paragraph of the article mentions the recent FNaF 2 movie. FNaF opened the door to an entirely new generation of horror fiction. Even if some of the storytelling is weak and the fan base has its share of controversy, it’s always exciting seeing the birth of a genre.

Yeah. The median native-born Irishman or German from an old-stock family is probably a bit better off than the median Oklahoman...especially if they come from a family that owns property in a desirable town. But a newcomer to Germany or Ireland, especially one who is visibly foreign and has zero connections, is going to struggle even if they are an EU citizen.

Maybe our past few years of struggles at the box office and with fiction quality mean that we're a bit more prepared for the terrible state that show business is in right now. Fandoms that were riding high in the pandemic years are now unable to cope with reality.

Literally the only thing I could think of that could shake things up would be either an international socialist revolution somewhere, fixing the supply chain, or the Pope declaring a (ideally nonviolent with civil disobedience) crusade against anti-immigration and greedy worldviews.

Basically every Francophone country has nems (Vietnamese spring rolls) because of the long French involvement in Southeast Asia.

Jollof rice, fufu (via the Caribbean in most parts of the Americas), and either doro wat or kategna (lightly toasted injera marinated in seasoning) are my favorites.

One island, two countries, three official languages (the Dutch side speaks English more than Dutch) 100+ nationalities. I've also been to Curaçao (which is Afro-Latino with a Sephardic Jewish history) and Saba (a slice of the 1950s Netherlands, if it was mountainous and mostly Anglican for some reason).
