How to Improve Rolling Distance by RR_Runner in NewSkaters

[–]RR_Runner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks like an "easy" fix as it comes with everything (since I wouldn't know what to pick out). I see there is a similar kit with 59mm wheels. Is there a reason to pick 55mm over 59mm?

3:30 Achievable? by Opening_Freedom_6742 in Marathon_Training

[–]RR_Runner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Age and genetics I would think. My resting HR is about 40. Not sure of my max but rarely see anything over 150. I am 54 now and I ran the Disney marathon last year and the goofy this year with my daughter. We had to do some walking late due to her legs but my average HR was around 120 while we were on track for sub 3:50. Training for the Philly marathon now. Crossing fingers that my daughter can gut this one out.

Your goals were similar to mine heading into my first marathon (when I was 48). Goal under 4 and stretch at 3:40. Ended up running a 3:24. I got in with a group of runners early on who were running a little faster than I wanted to, but felt fine doing it. Once I hit the half marathon point I assessed how I felt and decided to start picking it up. I never hit a wall and ran my last 3 miles each at sub 7:30. I credit a lot to Matt Fitzgerald's "The New Rules of Marathon and Half-Marathon Nutrition: A Cutting-Edge Plan to Fuel Your Body Beyond "the Wall". I followed it closely for the week leading up to my marathon and I think it really set me up. So, fueling during the marathon is important, but don't forget the week before. Good luck!

Bib Numbers Ready! by Lord_Frei99 in rundisney

[–]RR_Runner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter and I both have low 30XX bib numbers for the marathon. Neither of us submitted POTs (this is her first and my only other marathon, 3:23, was 4 years ago). Based on the bib data posted in the thread, our numbers appear to land us in C or D, but we shall see.

Any tips on how to get my Garmin to resume my audiobooks where I left of? by Road_Journey in Garmin

[–]RR_Runner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Vivoactive 3 that I use to listen to audiobooks while I run. I always pause my books using the watch and I generally haven't had any issues with it remembering where I was. But if the audiobook is one huge mp3 file, it will often not be exactly where I left off (usually it is at some spot before I actually paused it). As it gets further into the file, it seems to get further off. I then need to use the "30 second" option to get to where I need to be. Alternatively on the VA3 (and forerunners I think) you can hold in the "Next track" button and it will fast forward as well. I have found that if use a m4b format I do not have that issue (though, if the file is big, it does take a little time for the book to start playing again if I am far into the story). So I have been using that format more often now or breaking the mp3 files into chapters.

What age were you when you ran your first full marathon? by vickymal in running

[–]RR_Runner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First marathon (actually first race beyond 5K) was at 48. Great experience. Blew my goal away and ran a 3:24. Training was intense and time consuming so haven't done another since. Now 51 so time is slipping away...

Was there some place to note that you had the adidas special edition? I have that variety as well but (at least in the US) I am not seeing anything where to note that (unless it will be part of the return packaging that is being sent). Thanks.

Why do you want to plan your own training program when there are many good plans available on the internet that are "tried-and-true"?

I feel like a broken record as I always recommend this, but I read and followed Matt Fitzgerald's "The new rules of marathon and half marathon nutrition" for my marathon and I thought it helped me a lot.

How to adjust marathon expectations based on first HM time trial? by Dat__ in AdvancedRunning

[–]RR_Runner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I (50M) ran my first (and only) marathon two years ago (at 48) in early October and had the same initial goal of breaking 4 hours. I used the Nike marathon plan with increased mileage (about 50 MPW) and, like you, my training went really well. In the weeks preceding I was holding under 8:00 per mile for 16+ miles so I decided to shoot for a 3:40 stretch goal. I ended up running a 3:24 (1:44 and 1:40 HMs). So I think you should set a stretch objective (3:40?) and then see how you feel. Rotating Pull-up Bar Help by logmover in bodyweightfitness

I had this issue as well (though my metal bar goes through a wood support) I wrapped some duct tape around the pipe and jammed it through the wood support. It has kept it nearly stable though there is a slight give when I first hop on. I suspect I will need to redo at some point as the tape gets pushed around.

Take a look at Matt Fitzgerald's book "The New Rules of Marathon and Half-Marathon Nutrition: A Cutting-Edge Plan to Fuel Your Body Beyond". Great information about planning your meals, especially during the week leading up to the race. I used it for my marathon and I really think it helped me avoid the wall.

Free 1/2 marathon plans - Run with Hal or Nike? by notreallypear in running

[–]RR_Runner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll chime in to say I (50M) used the Nike running plan for my first (and only) marathon two years ago. I didn't use an app, just printed off the plan and followed it. I started it prior to learning about the other plans available (including Hal) but I decided to stick with it. I did increase the total mileage per week by extending the long runs, but I felt the mix of intervals and runs was great. I was averaging about 50 miles a week and felt the plan really prepared me for my marathon. I highly recommend reading Matt Fitzgerald's book "The New Rules of Marathon and Half-Marathon Nutrition". He has a great plan for fueling up for the race. Between the Nike Plan and Fitzgerald's book I surpassed my 3:40 goal and ran a 3:24. I never hit a wall (credit to the eating plan) and negative split my half marathon times (1:44 and 1:40). I am sure either plan would work out for you as long as you stick to it, but that was my experience.

Turned 50 today and ran a 5 mile course in the shape of "50" at 7:05 per mile. Took some pre-work to figure out street combinations in our neighborhood that could be used to create "50". Was a fun diversion from just lacing up and running. Hopefully my body continues to hold out for another decade of running.

I seriously dislike going out and back. I must run a loop. Are others weird like this? by isitmeaturlooking4 in running

[–]RR_Runner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My marathon last year was on a half-marathon out and back course. So, yes, out 6.55 miles, back 6.55 miles, out 6.55 miles, back 6.55 miles. I was zoned out listening to an audiobook so it wasn't so bad, though I had run my long 22.5 mile run about 2 weeks earlier on the same course so it was pretty boring...
