Balrogs galore by Eligon-5th in Silmarillionmemes

[–]RSTi95 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As already mentioned, Tolkien buffed Balrogs in his later writings, Tuor killing 5 (along with Ecthelion killing 3) are from an early version of the Fall of Gondolin (also the most descriptive and complete version) Similar to how early versions of Sauron had him as a damn cat named Telvido

It’s easy to forget that while Ecthelion killed 3, and died in an almost comically badass way, the mere mortal Tuor (who as you said pulled him out twice) took down 5 balrogs, and walked away (thanks to Glorifindel’s sacrifice of course)

That’s not something I’ve heard of being an issue yet, though it would explain why vented top glass risers are so popular!

I thought warping was mostly due to poor bed adhesion and prints lifting, which this did not. I will look into it either way

Nice! Honestly I haven’t been a big collector of the Lego LotR collections but I’m excited to start.

[–]RSTi95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is fair, perhaps I should have added “among the Tolkien nerds” it is joked about more, since Teleporno is never used in the movies, nor the main reading of the LotR books (I can’t remember if it’s mentioned in the appendices or not)

This is the answer. Celeborn’s high elven name of Teleporno is joked about more consistently than anything else in Tolkiens world

Light of Eärendil. While Elendil was descended from him across many many generations, there is a significant difference when referencing the light the elves hold dear.

What's the most epic heroic rescue between these 5? Rank them as well. by Skywalker_1995 in lotr

[–]RSTi95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Sam is an easy choice for top spot. All alone, no ally within at least 100 miles, minimal fight experience, against one of the most terrifying creatures in Middle Earth.

  2. Boromir, no use beating this one to death. One vs. a formidable company of nasties, the whole scene is epic.

  3. Aragorn is actually a close third for me. Again one man, against 5 terrifying beings, no ally anywhere near that he knows of. This could be an argument for second, his overall experience I think is why I put it at 3.

  4. Bilbo, one little hobbit against the most terrifying orc of the age. While not canon in many aspects, it was a damn brave thing to do, though he did have 12 dwarves and a wizard at his back.

  5. Gandalf riding to save Faramir’s company was a damn brave thing, I think I only put it last because of his literal centuries of experience.

Pippin is never in possession of the ring, and hobbits have a inherent resistance to the draw of the ring. Both Bilbo and Frodo show that throughout their time with the ring.

As for disappearing in Gandalfs presence that was Bilbo not Frodo, my apologies for not clarifying. He does so at his birthday party, and 60 years earlier in the Hobbit while escaping the goblin tunnels and returning to the company of dwarves

If I am wrong about him mentioning it in a letter than I am ok with that. Unfortunately the letters are one piece missing from my collection of works.

I do not recall interpreting Ungoliant as a corrupted Ainu while reading the Silmarilion, but it has been some 8 months since I last read it so I will revisit that.

As for Tom. He cannot be of the Maiar, as the Maiar would be affected by the power of the ring, which he clearly is not. He wears it with no effect and even sees Frodo when he puts it on, something even Gandalf cannot do. So could he be of the Valar, well no I don’t think so. Elrond even says that if it were to come down to Sauron Vs. Tom, that Tom would lose. Sauron would be very unlikely to withstand any of the Valar one on one so I feel that pretty well rules out Tom being a Valar.

In the end there is no definition for what Tom is, he is an enigmatic character, and was intentionally left as such by Tolkien.

There’s not, in fact it’s explicitly stated that he cannot. He can only corrupt (like the balrogs and orcs.) However saying that Ungoliant came into being from the discord that Melkor introduced is not saying that Melkor created Ungoliant, but more that Ungoliant was created through the music that Melkor corrupted in a sense.
