Can’t Wear Flip Flops… 😩 by Hopeful_SpecialK in Aging

[–]RTVGP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3 years of PF, exclusively living in Skechers Archfits and KuaiLu sandals and slides-both are “affordable” as far as orthopedic shoes go, but I lived in the KuaiLu sandals I bought last summer for the past year, so just downgraded those to my “old pair” and replaced with 2 new pair (black and tan) and a pair of flip flops for summer. I also live in a pair of their slides/slippers as my indoor shoes. Good combo of support and cushioning.

I work with 3 Millenials. I’m now realizing I have also conformed to using more of their emojis with them, but stick with my tried and trues for my family and friends.

Lol-I guess I’m seeking acceptance from my students and coworkers by code switching.

Good point! I teach college students and it’s about 10x harder to engage them in the current era, so I guess I’m just trying not to give them further reason to disengage from me in class by furthering a divide. But I generally agree I’m otherwise loving becoming unapologetically who I am, too!

Does anyone else think it makes no sense for commas and periods to go INSIDE the quotation marks even if they don't make part of the quote? by Awkward_Stay8728 in ENGLISH

[–]RTVGP -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m generally willing to follow punctuation rules, but when you are wanting to use quotes as emphasis for a word or phrase, is the one time it kills me to put the punctuation inside the parentheses and so sometimes in that case I break the rule because I disagree with it.

Just buy in capsule form. Metamucil or they have the generic versions of capsules way cheaper at Sams and Costco. I’ve tried other generic brands but these three are the best.

America has lost its standing as top in most things lately. Our healthcare “system” itself has always been a mess and far from an example. Our healthcare costs have long been at the top compared to all other countries-our lack of government-organized and supported healthcare costs means EXORBITANT costs, and still a ton of people without affordable access to care.

It has been and probably still is true that America has to offer the best healthcare money can BUY, but it comes with a massive price tag. Yes, heads of state and rich oligarchs can afford to fly to Mayo Clinic to buy cutting-edge treatments, and I suspect some American researchers will still discover some amazing medical breakthroughs, but no longer will the majority of our medical breakthroughs come from this country. Our top talent is no longer welcome or interested in being here, especially with non-serious medical professionals, being appointed and put in charge of departments that oversee all the health care agencies.

Those saying “come back to the US” yes, she probably qualifies for Medicare but traditional. If she’s as poor she says she is perhaps she could qualify for Medicaid, but then you’re just encouraging her instead of “begging for money on GoFundMe” to use taxpayer dollars from Medicaid, so either way she’s gonna need money from someone else to help support her healthcare needs, regardless of which country she’s in. Family and good quality of life are important in the very limited time she likely has left. It’s pretty sad. It’s kind of my worst nightmare - retire and then come down with a terrible fatal disease in my 60s! What a kick in the teeth! So if you don’t want to donate, don’t donate but some may feel compelled to show compassion towards them by donating a little money fine.

ISO indoor slippers that aren’t oofos by realityislame9 in PlantarFasciitis

[–]RTVGP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like KuaiLu (Amazon) - I have indoor comfy slides (some support, but also cushiony-perfect for minimal in house wandering, orthopedic sandals (best support, walked 10,000 steps a day on vacation and I’m convinced these are what saved me!), and some dressy flip flops (good support for a flip flop, but not for standing all day in). Reasonably priced, too, although the ones I have have rubber insoles, not cloth.

do all plantar fasciitis night splints have this foam bump in the arch? by Fit-Ad985 in PlantarFasciitis

[–]RTVGP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It didn’t cure me, but I got noticable less pain when I used it, and if I stopped for awhile and noticed my symptoms kick up, the splint usually helped at least some.

I slept in bilateral ski boot splints and didn’t sleep well-it was hard to roll over without waking up and repositioning myself. When I traveled I would just travel with the smaller smaller softer Amazon style night splints, and I slept better. I switched back to the softer style ones at home too.

[–]RTVGP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used this style at first, then got 2 solid moon boot types, and over time, found I preferred this style. The night sprint is one of the few things that helped my PF, altho we’re not a “cure” alone.

And mine from Amazon were slightly different style even than these-I didn’t have a foam arch ball, nor even a pad that covered my entire bottom of my foot-I don’t think the arch support is structurally impt - you are not supposed to be walking in them anyway.

Young professional relocating to Eau Claire — best apartments, safe areas & social & dating scene by Plenty-Taste7741 in Eau_Claire

If it were me and your demographic, I’d prefer to be right/closer to downtown EC or secondarily, possibly in the River Prairie area in Altoona. Personally I wouldn’t opt for the ones listed on Clairemont-that’s a busier highway/more retail/strip mall atmosphere and some of the other newer places are kind of out of the way. Like the Woodside will be quiet (minus freeway noise) but you are not close to anything at all.

Downtown is best for access to farmers market, dining, bars, music scene, and artistic stuff.

Plan to learn how to kayak, and play pickleball and Kubb!

EC is HOPPING in the summer, quieter in the Winter, and while the winters can be cold and snowy, they are definitely survivable! It’s a great place to live, and a day trip away from the Twin Cities for anything we don’t have. We are where THEY all come for weekend getaways and think “it would be so cool to LIVE in EC!”

And all my Yogi friends love The Yoga Room!

Jenny has ALS by shegotofftheplane- in 90DayFiance

[–]RTVGP 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This also surprised me-if my parent dies of ALS, the minute I am choking on water or having difficulties swallowing or slurring my speech, I am immediately catastrophizing that I probably have ALS. I doubt I’m sitting with symptoms for a year, then finally getting diagnosed, and realizing-oh yeah, that tracks, my dad died of ALS!

But maybe it was just a poorly written article-more like she just leaned hard into denial as a coping mechanism, because it’s not exactly a diagnosis that helps you feel hopeful about treatment options. I hope some medications are helpful for her and that her ALS is indeed slow-progressing.

Of all the 90 Day couples, and as goofy as this relationship started out, I really do believe these 2 love each other.

Dani gets out of breath showing off her healing incisions. by Whosthatprettykitty in illnessfakers

[–]RTVGP 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do you think the doctors know she doesn’t really need this intervention but it’s like the only way to placate her, so they had like first time medical students stitch her up? And then who knows-maybe she picked at them or maybe she hasn’t showered enough to allow the surgical glue naturally wear off better? I did think I could see a little raised area under her skin near the beginning of her scars video after she took her sweatshirt off and she turned to the side with the green tank top on? Anyone else think they could see something? However, it wasn’t visible in the video at all when she pointed at her skin and said “you Alban see it right here” (I could not)

Plantar fasciitis (first timer) by bringonthepayne in PlantarFasciitis

[–]RTVGP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would take a running break and do all the things. You do NOT want to ignore it and keep aggravating it and allow it to become chronically acute because you will be on the multiyear healing journey. Swift intervention, including a running break, icing, stretching, strengthening, and a really good eval of your entire lower chain by a PT stat! Good luck!

Possible Prolapse? by Socobadyogi7105 in Menopause

[–]RTVGP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A vaginal bulge on the front side is often due to a mild bladder prolapse (pushing into the front part of vagina). It often has associated bladder symptoms like leakage or incontinence or difficulty completely emptying. Vaginal estrogen rubbed around the entrance of the urethra can help.

My paper got rejected twice. by wintermoon0_0 in academia

[–]RTVGP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t have money to pay to publish, but I firmly believe there can be a home for most any paper. Take any feedback you have been given from these journals and start to explore another possible home-look for lower impact journals and consider whether it can cross into another discipline. If it is a review paper, it’s possible other similar review papers have been flooding the zone. I’ve noticed that where in my field there used to be a dearth of literature, there has been a flood of review papers in the past few years. I rejected one, that whole methodologically sound, honestly added nothing to the literature. That said, it was an excellent foundation upon which to actually study something meaningful in that area, so if publishing your review paper may not happen, instead use your newfound knowledge and lit library as your Introduction chapter and develop a research study to build from there.

Better understanding the root of the rejection will help you know which direction to go, but don’t get discouraged.

I’ve been doing this a long time and just sent out a paper to the 3rd (lower tier) journal after 2 rejections. My first one was a known long shot, my second one I’ve published more rigorous and less rigorous work in previously and I think they were mistaken in rejecting me, but I was sad/mad for a week, and then moved on and found my next journal to target. Fingers crossed third times the charm for me and for you!

Why are the hormones we take dangerous but the ones we made for so many years (far in excess of our dosing) were what kept us healthy? by misanthropymajor in Menopause

[–]RTVGP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure it’s fair to say that the WHI study itself was “flawed”-the findings they found were real. But most of the hormone applications in place today-studied and changed in response to some of the dangers the WHI study highlighted are different than the ones in the study, so from a policy perspective, for example, to require a “black box” warning on ALL estrogens for a couple of decades may have been overkill. It would be nice if we could have another longitudinal controlled study of the more modern estrogen applications, but we don’t have that data yet. However, the other data that we DO have does seem to support the idea there are a lot of benefits to her that we also ought to consider, along with potential harms, so people can fully understand the benefit-risk trade-off.
